Bernie Sanders supporters have taken over the leadership of the Brevard County Democratic Executive Committee, pledging to work to turn the county’s political landscape from red to blue.

The new party chair is Stacey Patel of Satellite Beach, who trounced two opponents in committee elections this week. Patel was an elected Sanders delegate to the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Patel said after her election that she will work to find candidates who can win local offices.

“We’ve already expanded the membership significantly this year” within the local Democratic committee, Patel said. “And we are going to work to continue to expand the membership. By doing that, we’re going to expand the Democratic electorate here, and begin to identify really strong candidates from the Democratic side. So we expect to really be prepared for 2018. We are all in this together.”

To Lt. Governor Patrick:

We, the women of Texas, insist that you remove the “Women’s Privacy Act” from the legislative session. We women do not need protection from our trans sisters, they are our sisters in womanhood and mean us no harm. If you wish to continue to push through such openly bigoted legislation, then the women of Texas will not have it put forth in our name. Texas women will not allow you to sully us with your hatred.  We implore you, take a step in the right direction, be on the right side of history.  Kill this bill before it begins. 

Violence against women committed by members of the trans community is statistically zero.  This type of legislation flies in the face of the conservative movement for small government due to lack of factual basis for the need of it. Additionally, it reinforces the trans community as a target for hate and violence, which is already a scary reality for these members of our communities.

And if that argument isn’t enough, there’s the economic impact of such  policy. 70% of North Carolinians believe their “Bathroom Bill” has had a negative impact on the state’s reputation nationally. Businesses withdrew plans to expand in NC cities costing much needed potential jobs from the region.

The “Women’s Privacy Act” may have arisen out of concern for public safety, but it is misguided, illogical legislation that needs to be rejected.

If the legislature is committed to protecting women and girls, we would suggest they instead alocate the funds to move through the 18,400 backlogged rape kits in Texas, address the nearly 200K reports of family violence, and offer services for the 24.3% of children in Texas living in poverty.

Since I called the day after Thanksgiving, I hit their voicemail and left my number.

The office called me back today to let me know that my opposition has been tallied, and they are continuing to tally public response regarding the Women’s Privacy Act.

If you live in American, you’ve likely heard of the ongoing struggle taking place at the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. There, hundreds of protestors are standing their ground against both Dakota Access LLC (Energy Transfer Partners) and the militaristic police presence. The police force in this area has ordered and deployed vicious assaults against the peaceful protestors in the form of attack dogs, rubber bullets, tear gas, and more.

What Is The Dakota Access Pipeline?

The Dakota Access Pipeline is a proposed crude oil pipeline that has been approved by The US Army Corps of Engineers in July 2016. The pipeline would run underground from North Dakota to Illinois by way of South Dakota and Iowa. (x)

Why Is DAPL Bad?

The Dakota Access Pipeline is opposed because of several reasons. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe stated in their filed complaint in federal court that “the construction and operation of the pipeline…threatens the Tribe’s environment and economic well-being, and would damage and destroy sites of great historic, religious, and cultural significance to the Tribe.” (x) The construction of DAPL would disturb the environment and very possibly contaminate the natural water sources that the locals rely on. In addition, many feel that resources would be better spent investing in alternative energy sources.

What Can We Do To Help Right Now?

Even if you are not able to travel to Standing Rock to join the protesters, there are many ways to contribute to their cause and to their protection and well being.

So first thing: fight for that media circus. House reps will do ANYTHING for reelection. Friction within the party will force them to pick sides.

Second thing: VOTE IN 2018. Mid-term elections are a thing. ALL 435 SEATS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WILL BE CONTESTED. Go out and VOTE. We can win back the house. That’s one victory we sorely need. 33/100 SEATS OF SENATE WILL BE CONTESTED. We can win that back, too. 38 GOVERNORSHIPS WILL BE CONTESTED. If your county’s red, time to turn that around. VOTE ON NOVEMBER 6TH, 2018.
