// WHITE SHEET // guest story by Jonathan Sims This month’s guest story is by Jonathan Sims, a writer, performer and games designer whose work primarily focuses on the macabre, the grotesque, and the gentle touch of creeping dread. Jonny is the mind and the voice behind acclaimed horror podcast The Magnus Archives, high octane space-cabaret The Mechanisms and some of your favourite nightmares. See more of his fine work at https://jonathan-sims.com/
shout out to the very first piece of jonathan sims’ work i ever encountered, that i promptly forgot about forever and eventually just made tma and the mechs my current special interest because they were tumblr popular. turns out i’ve always really liked his style.
I read this and thought “oh this feels like something from tma, like something from a Lonely statement.” Then I thought, “ugh stop associating everything you see with whatever you’re currently fixated on.” Then I saw who wrote it. This was a journey.
[Image Description: Several digital greyscale sketches of Jonathan Sims, a thin man with short, choppy hair and medium-dark skin wearing a dark sweater over a white button-up, dark pants and white shoes. Left: A full-body shot of an unhappy Jon holding a tape in one hand by his side. His shoelaces are untied and one sleeve is rolled up a bit higher than the other. In the corner reads the text “Easier to keep short hair clean, anxious about barbers” with an arrow pointing at his hair.
Top right: Jon and Daisy, a light-skinned woman with long light hair wearing a dark t-shirt, coming out of a coffin covered in dirt. They are clasping hands, and Jon is gasping for air.
Middle right: Jon is coming out of a doorway gripping the door frame, shouting “MARTIN”. Martin Blackwood, a fat light-skinned man with long hair in a ponytail wearing a button up shirt, black tie and slacks, is walking down a hall with a folder in hand looking nervous with a blush across his face.
Bottom right: Jon is standing with his elbows up and hands out, with a lazer shooting out of his eye. To his right is a skeleton with a boat captain’s hat being lazer-ed. Above and below Jon is the text “THE ARCHIVIST HAS LAZER EYES”. End ID]

rereading the transcript for mag 191 this weekend when i had no reception actually made me kind of sad for the cult again. the unnamed cultist talks about it being dangerous for them to share names, and worries that something will come for them, and while she isn't right about the name thing, what happens a few episodes later? something comes for them. that is so fucking sad we don't talk about this enough.
rocking that ‘just got promoted’ haircut there jarch!

Soooo I'm only starting to listen to season 5 of the magnus archive and things are Intense™ and Sad™. Here's a little season 3 (I think??) Basira hanging out in a corner reading books
[ID: a drawing of Martin Blackwood as he might appear if he retained some of the qualities of being an avatar of the Lonely. He is a large white man with short light hair, and is wearing a plain sweater, pants, and is colored in grayscale. He has a slack expression, and there are small clouds surrounding him. The clouds around him are distorting the bookshelf and doorframe behind him, curling over the curves of them, and Martin himself also seems to be slightly translucent and distorting the things behind him. End ID]
A more monster-y version of Lonely Martin. I thought it would be interesting if the clouds/fog weren’t entirely there but still seemed to warp the things behind them, like an inverse version of distortion from heat. If someone looks at him, they’re not entirely sure he’s there at all, which.. well, that’s sort of the theme of the Lonely. As with Jon, he’s not like this most of the time, but sometimes things get weird anyway
Jonathan Sims cannot drive. Idk why that is my headcanon but it just feels right. Martin asks him if he wants to drive the first half up to Scotland and he agrees and then immediately backs into a parked car.
“It’s a Volvo.”
“It’s a getaway car, Jon,” Martin replies in that ever-patient, even tone of his, the one that developed only after Jon woke from his coma. The Lonely hasn’t left him yet. “I don’t think we’re allowed to be picky.”
“Still,” he grumbles, fidgeting with the keys in his hand. Martin seems to fade in and out in front of him, like a blurry picture Jon can’t quite make out. Basira told them where to go, giving them an address in the middle of nowhere, Scotland- it would certainly be a long trip. They’re light on luggage, both of them having slimmed down their possessions quite significantly during the past few months. The directions led them to a derelict part of the outer boroughs of London, where the beat up car sits cleanly between two other equally decrepit vehicles- unassuming, just as Daisy would’ve wanted.
More importantly, no cameras. Though Jon’s sure Jonah’s still watching their every move.
“C’mon, let’s get a move on.” Martin gestures at Jon to open the back door where they throw their bags. Jon pauses, staring at the car in consideration. “Well? Do you want to drive, or shall I?”
Jon shakes his head. Martin looks so tired, he needs a break. Jon will give that to him. “I’ll drive.”
In theory, he Knows how to. He hadn’t had much need for it in his hometown, he usually walked everywhere and caught a ride when needed. At uni he didn’t even need to at all, and Georgie had her own beat up car not unlike this one. It shouldn’t be hard.

Now that I’m set on doing a whole series of this, I decided to change a bunch of things about shading and shape language to help things read better with multiple characters running around and generally make it easier to draw. I’ll eventually go back and redo the first page to look like this.

Actually, Jonathan Sims was the name of the writer. You're thinking of Jonathan Sims's monster, Jonathan Sims.
It's honestly been a minute since I listened to I Am In Eskew, and I'm thinking of the moments/images that stand out the most to me:
The ending (of course.)
The storyline where David is slowly crowded out of his apartment.
The bridge that stalks him for an episode, particularly the moment at his workplace.
His daughter.
Killing a bug over and over.
The hospital ward.
The mental image of the fish market.
The Fitzsimmons Project, (though that one was mostly funny.)
Kenneth talking about his family.
The moment on the plane where David says he doesn't want to be anything.
The story of The Boy Who Saw Cracks In The World.
Some of this works as horror because of the imagery or concept, a lot of it works because of the emotional impact, some of it is at least a little bit ridiculous but all of it makes brain go whrr, that's for sure.
you guys know calvin & hobbes, right?
been spending my breaks at work and between and during classes when bored drawing this comic. was supposed to be two pages and fun and instead its 14 pages and sad. thanks to my friends who saw me literally crying into my sketchbook while i drew this and made fun of me, also shoutout to me for drawing martin different in every panel.
Issues 1-4 of the TMA comic book that never was! Y’all have been super sweet about this series! I had a blast making these and I love reading all of your comments. For everyone asking me where they can buy these as prints: I am super psyched you want these as physical objects in your house! I’m also not going to offer them for purchase bc The Rusty Quill is an indie production and it would be hella shady of me to make money off their IP. HOWEVER I was thinking it might be cool to print a limited number of these for Christmas/the new year and send them out on a first come, first serve basis for people who make a donation of 15$ or something to the show. If you’re interested in that send me an ask or something and I can try to gage how many people would actually be game and then decide.

It’s Looking Back
this is inspired by @dudeiwannasleep ‘s concept! and I may have got... a little carried away drawing it.
Just realized that from Elias’s perspective The Magnus Archives absolutely is a workplace comedy. I mean, have you heard how perpetually amused he sounded the first 4 seasons? The man was having a blast.
