he is just this slightly weird, deeply traumatized little guy with abandonment issues who is terrified of losing everyone he loves (because he already has) so he constantly searches for ways to make himself useful so they have a reason to keep him around because he doesn’t think anyone would really want him around otherwise and also he just likes doing things for the people he loves!!

he dresses in the colors of the rainbow because hey, space is dark, and the delta quadrant is scary a lot, and c’mon, who doesn’t love rainbows? he appoints himself the morale officer on a ship full of people who have been forcibly flung tens of thousands of light years away from their homes and families, and that…is probably the hardest job he could’ve given himself, but damn if it isn’t an important one. he does his best to make people smile every day and he starts up ‘briefings with neelix’ to report about the ship’s goings on and to shine a light on people’s accomplishments so they feel like they’re part of the community, and he tries to learn how to make meals from everyone’s homes so no one feels forgotten!!

more than anything he wants everyone on voyager to know they’re not alone, because he knows what being truly alone feels like and he doesn’t want anyone in his orbit to ever, ever feel like that!

when ensign wildman suffers that unimaginable loss during the schism, it’s neelix who holds her up and keeps her from crumpling to the sickbay floor. he holds onto her and he doesn’t let go because he knows that kind of soul-crushing grief all too well, and no, he can’t take her pain away, but he can stand in the storm with her.

and there is not a single person on that ship that he wouldn’t do the same for. he will never, ever let anyone go through pain alone if he can help it.

like??? sure, he doesn’t always read the room and he can be a lot to handle, and he can be needy and insecure and jealous, but god he’s so full of love and compassion and he wants people to know that they’re seen and that they matter, damn it.

also him reading tom about his “faux lime aftershave” in parturition was iconic, ok!!
