James T Kirk explained in 3 sentences, ladies and gentlemen.
It’s very interesting to me that Kirk actually begins his career as a command officer firmly in the square of lawful good. He’s a rule-follower. He believes in the chain of command. Comparatively, Spock is much more of a neutral good character throughout the series: he will do things by the book when he thinks that will do the most good— which is often, otherwise he would not last long in Starfleet— however, when he feels disobeying the rules is the more moral choice, he does it without hesitation. But over time you watch Kirk’s frustration with those occasions where the chain of command fails, times where he makes the ‘correct’ choice and it doesn’t work, times he pushes his orders to the absolute limit, crossing boundaries to do what his instincts tell him to do. And it makes him question things more. He and Spock are alike in that they both believe that there’s no such thing as an ‘acceptable’ loss, if that loss is a fellow officer.
This is Kirk doing what he knows he has to do in order to honour Spock’s wishes after his death. The only thing. He stands to gain nothing— and lose everything, because he understands that he will be court martialed and stripped of his command— but in his mind he’s already lost everything. Spock is gone, and they’re retiring his beloved ship. The only thing he has to gain at this point (because he doesn’t know Spock’s body has been resurrected), is the knowledge that he’s doing the right thing. And the choice is really as easy as it is in the frames above— because he knows it’s the choice Spock would make in his place.
I spent far too much time on this joke and it’s not even that funny but it’s been haunting me for three days

Young Spock planning how to stand up to his bullies, colorized
I love it when people criticize kirk for not stopping bones and spock fighting, like that's his favorite show?? Like god forbid a man wants to see the girls fight. (And maybe kiss thereafter)
Kirk knows that for Bones and Spock having regular fights is enrichment. It keeps them happy and healthy,it supports their longevity
i think that tos is remembered as the uplifting and silly trek and by this kirk is kind of often characterized as mostly optimistic and joyful. and he is to an extent, but if you watch the show he is also constantly like wallowing in angst and staring into distances and being crushed by his responsibility. kirk's tortured as fuck. and partially because of this janeway is a better "kirk reprise" than archer (when both of these shows sort of aimed to be tos again, with more freedom and less tying up in starfleet rules). well she's also better because she is just better written, and because the "all american-nes" of kirk was like not even that relevant to why he was a good character and they really overcorrected with archer with it and the masculinity performance both. but also because for voyager they really leaned into the angst and the torture! janeway is also staring into the distance. janeway is assuming eleven tortured poses before breakfast and that's why she's a true kirk-type, not just her confidence and devotion of her crew she gets
Star Trek
#my favorite shore leave theory is that the shore leave factories didn't generate anything for spock not only bc he's sufficiently repressed#but because torn shirt kirk is. right next to him already. honestly shirtless kirk beating up his own old bully while spock watches#is. i think this is spock's kink actually. up there with the 'yes...yes...good...good' voyeuristic reaction to kirk inventing a bazooka#spock watching kirk be righteous and brilliant with as little clothes as possible and spock himself getting to be Correct about everything#is a GREAT day for spock already. who needs wish fulfillment#kirk isn't even interested in the chorus girl sexbots only the simulacrum of his steady gf. & real ruth is out of the picture and no threat#also they got to grab each other multiple times it was basically obscene. AND all this started when kirk only wanted a massage from him.#so 'shore leave' in its entirety is pretty much 10/10 no notes ideal day as far as spock's psyche is concerned w/ no need for extra steps @anghraine tags
You know each time I watch this clip I think to myself like wow it really does look like it’s from some vintage gay porno for a second
Always reblog Spock's ''Oh no, he's hot'' scene.
(He's right, of course. And perhaps more than a little bit... Titillated.)

I think there's sometimes a bit of a misconception in TOS spaces that a Vulcan's options during pon farr are fuck, kill, or die, but like. correct me if I'm wholly misremembering things, but that's not. actually true. Killing isn't supposed to end pon farr (in TOS canon, at least - idk if they retcon this in later treks). In the event of Spock killing Kirk, what was expected to happen was that Spock would then take T'Pring as his wife and then that would end his pon farr. It was a shock that he could just reject T'Pring! She was expecting that, in the event that Spock won, he would still be forced to take her as a wife - but instead Kirk's death just somehow snapped him out of his fever. And that's why amok time is gay. It's not just because they were rolling around in the sand! It's because the fact that Spock's pon farr ended after Kirk "died" implies either:
a) he came a little (which is gay)
or
b) he was so devastated at the thought that he killed his captain that it broke through the supposedly-unbreakable blood fever (which is really gay)
was watching a video essay on how grim star trek is nowadays and saw some great comments.
