I was feeling agitated and artblocked yesterday so I decided to give my brain a rest by watching TV and then the next thing I knew these were in front of me

My favourite translator said that when she was an ambassador for Hungary she took all these Japanese politicians on a tour and she was trying to circumtranslate ‘merry go round’ cause she didn’t know the Japanese word for it by calling it a ‘horse tornado for children’ and they had no blessed idea what she was saying and she finally started running in circles going up and down and they go ‘ohhhhh, in Japan we call those ‘merry-go-rounds’”
I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area they’ve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record I’m fine with
But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. They gave us a cowboy
Here he is, the Aldi Cowboy

pros of being on testosterone: my kermit impression is getting better
cons of being on testosterone: my Mort from Madagascar impression is getting worse
peace and love on planet fucking earth
She got the idea for the study while walking with her advisor at Stanford to discuss her thesis topic, and the paper she eventually published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014 is sharp enough that it should have ended the seated meeting on the day it came out.
She ran 4 experiments on 176 people. Same person tested twice. Once sitting, once walking. The creativity tasks were the standard ones psychologists have used for decades to measure how good a brain is at generating novel useful ideas.
81% of participants in the first experiment produced more creative ideas while walking than while sitting. In the second experiment, 88%. In the third, 100%. Every single person walked into a more creative version of themselves. On average, people generated 60% more novel useful ideas the moment their legs started moving.
The skeptical question is the obvious one. Maybe it was the fresh air. Maybe it was the scenery passing by. Maybe it was the change of environment doing the work, not the walking itself.
Oppezzo killed every one of those explanations with one experimental decision. She put people on a treadmill facing a blank wall. No scenery. No fresh air. No environmental change. Just legs moving in place while staring at white drywall. The 60% boost held.
Then she ran the experiment that closed the case completely. She took participants outside in two conditions. Half of them walked through a Stanford courtyard. The other half were pushed through the exact same courtyard in a wheelchair. Same outdoor stimulation. Same scenery passing at the same speed. The only difference was whether the legs were moving.
The walkers produced dramatically more novel high-quality ideas than the wheelchair group. The outdoors did almost nothing on its own. The walking did everything.
She also tested the opposite kind of thinking. Convergent thinking. The kind where there is one right answer and you have to narrow down to it. Word puzzles where 3 words share a hidden fourth word that connects them. The seated participants did slightly better on these. Walkers got slightly worse.
Walking is not a general intelligence enhancer. It does one specific thing. It opens up the divergent search inside your brain. The part that generates options. The part that produces unexpected connections. The part that takes a problem and finds five ways into it instead of one.
When you need to converge on the single right answer, sit down. When you need to find the answer in the first place, get up.
The mechanism is now well understood. Walking selectively activates what neuroscientists call the default mode network, the system inside your brain that runs when you are not consciously focused on anything. The DMN is where mind-wandering happens. Where memories cross-reference each other. Where ideas that have been sitting in separate folders inside your head finally bump into each other.
When you sit at a desk and force yourself to concentrate, you suppress the DMN. When you walk at a natural pace, the executive part of your brain gets just busy enough handling the walking that the DMN comes online and starts doing the work that focus was blocking.
The most useful finding in the entire paper is the one almost nobody quotes. The boost did not turn off the moment people stopped walking. Participants who walked first and then sat back down stayed elevated. Their next round of seated creativity work was still significantly better than people who had been sitting the whole time. The rest lingered for at least several minutes after the legs stopped moving.
You do not need to do creative work while walking. You need to walk before the creative work. The brain holds the state.

see posts that say “its okay to not brush your teeth because of mental illness”
don’t brush your teeth before bed for years
get moderate to severe gum sensitivity
lose all your teeth because of anti-healing idiots online
Your reminder to brush and floss today! Every little bit makes a difference, pls try.
And remember that your dentist can help you find strategies to help you brush and mitigation strategies for when it’s hard.
It’s not too late to start caring for your teeth! Do it today, even just once.
I stopped brushing my teeth for a bit when I got super depressed a few years ago. I was barely taking care of myself. My breath was awful and I knew it and I didn’t want to be around anyone ever because of it, which only made everything worse.
I don’t know what pulled me out of it but I realized I needed to take care of myself. So I started brushing just once a day, because 1 > 0. I figured I probably had a dozen cavities and was going to have to spend a fortune at the dentist already. May as well pump the brakes a little, and it made my breath smell nice again!
Then I had a filling pop out. It lodged between my teeth and I couldn’t get it out. I couldn’t afford a dentist, so I had to meticulously floss it every single day multiple times a day because food kept getting jammed and it was uncomfortable as hell. I put a bag of floss sticks on my desk and would just pick away while doing whatever on the computer.
And since I was there anyway, I started flossing more of my teeth. Eventually I worked up to brushing 2x a day, sometimes.
When I was finally able to see a dentist, I fully expected to be told I’d need root canals by the dozen after all that time I’d spent not brushing at all. But to my surprise, she said my cavities weren’t too bad and there’s nothing urgent. I now have an over-time plan to fix one at a time until they’re all done.
It’s still going to set me back about $4000 in total, but imagine how much worse it could have been if I hadn’t started caring for my teeth again? And it’s worth mentioning I would have saved $4000 by just brushing once a day.
2 > 1, but 1 > 0. Mouthwash > nothing. Floss > nothing. Slap a bag of floss sticks where you hang out most at home and just pick away while you watch TV/youtube. You will save yourself thousands in dental care. Root canals are not cheap.
