random Vegebul and other things

Aw shucks…you got it! I’ll be sticking with some personal favorites of the better-known lengthier must-reads with a shorter piece by the same author if you want a little test-drive first. Since (somehow?) I haven’t really made a fanfic rec post yet, thank you, i-cant-let-you-down-again, for asking! Please let me know if you’ve read them all and I’ll work post-haste on finishing my “not-as-well-known-but-still-really-awesome-fics” post. And of course, there are still tons of also really great and well-known pieces that I’ve not mentioned because I would likely write forever about V/B fanfiction so I have to stop somewhere. At least for today.

Most of these pieces don’t go beyond some minor OOCness but if you’re firmly in the NO OOC EVER category, sorry. And also used Mediaminer links when appropriate for maximum lemon appreciation. I also apparently need to write a separate post on this one fic (Lisalu’s A Glad Day) because I started and then 1500 words later realized I was a bit off track. (I took it off the list but will finish it up soon.) I’ll do my best to keep this moderately succinct and to the point. SUCH A LIE LOOK AT ALL THESE WORDS On to some recs!

World Enough and Time by Lisalu

I’ll preface this with a lighthearted warning that is wholly contradictory to how ruthlessly grim this AU is—it starts off with a BulmaxRaditz pairing. But fret not; you’ll get more than your share of Vegebul and tears soon enough. A gripping series of events play out as wartime necessitates the discovery of how to triumph over an unspeakable evil. World Enough and Time is less explicit than some of Lisalu’s other works but it’s just as emotionally taxing…and a must-read.

From Bad to Worse by Darke Angelus

This one is the first in a trilogy and is a 3-year fic but don’t run away screaming just yet! This might be the rec that delves furthest into OOC territory but honestly, I like Darke’s intellectual!Vegeta as he has a sense of genius that rivals Bulma’s while still remaining a cantankerous badass. This series is one of my yearly rereads and all three stories are enjoyable and well-written to boot. Melodramatic as all get-out, certainly, but balanced with with some seriously funny moments to counter the angsty, heart-wrenching ones.

Lab Monkey by Tempestt(/TemptingTemptation) 

I am genuinely afraid of Tempestt’s Vegeta in Lab Monkey. He’s ferocious and cunning and scary as hell. (Maybe that’s why I adore AUs so much; they allow Vegeta to truly be the piece of shit he is, which makes his development all the sweeter.) Bulma’s scientific mind just doesn’t know when to let well enough alone—then again, she’s always been a hormone-addled adrenaline junky on the lookout for adventure—as she’s bitten off more than she can chew with this experiment. A wickedly hot and insufferably fun story.

You’ll Be the Death of Me by niteryde 

Also the first in a trilogy, this is one of the best 3-year fics out there. What most surprised me when I first read this is that not only are Bulma and Yamcha still together at the beginning, but that the moments between the two of them are really enjoyable to read. In fact, Yamcha’s characterization really makes the buildup and progression of the V/B get-together all the more satisfying and worth the wait. Patience is a virtue but goddamnit niteryde you are too good at teasing us poor readers. So be prepared for some frustratingly hot tension.

Broken Down Universe by dragonbabezee

Oh god GOD no don’t read this unless also you’re ready to also have your heart ripped out of your chest. This story is a masterpiece; it’s heartbreaking, funny, sensual…and flows beautifully between various plot elements whether they’re grand fight scenes or minor details. The complexity of this iteration of the V/B relationship is done so well and I can’t heap enough loads of praise on dragonbabezee for dealing with the time travel aspect so skillfully. I can’t do any real justice to a summary beyond that, but any lover of Vegebul absolutely must read this piece.

Whew. I’ll tack on this here at the end and note that these are all completed pieces in this post. There are some seriously amazing DBZ fanfics out there that are unfinished and likely never will be. If you’re a masochist—as apparently I am, considering I continue to read and reread incomplete stories all the time—feel free to ask for some recommendations in that realm, though I’ll likely cover the unfinished stuff another time as well.

be kind, gentle, loving and helpful without expecting anything back. make tea and sweet treats for people you love

believe in magical creatures, and make ordinary things and people magical in your own way.

learn to be alone and enjoy the silence and peace, but also care deeply about others, and make others feel loved and special like they deserve

find your signature scent, aesthetic, handwriting, songs, quotes, clothing and colors like you’re a protagonist in a movie

learn to smile instinctively at people you make eye contact with. be a person that radiates warmth. be the friend you’ve always needed and wanted

see the good side in everything. don’t hold grudges or let small things affect your happiness

when you catch yourself dreading something, keep telling yourself “it will be nice”, the worst case scenarios almost never happens

make playlists for your moods, your favorite people, places, moments and things you want to experience

invent games for mundane things, like raindrops having a race rolling down the window

go swimming and pretend to be a mermaid, grow flowers and make jam and apple pies and pretend you’re in a fairytale

explore places aimlessly. walk without a purpose so you find nice surprises and places that become special to only you

Me:i never forced him eat, now he will pretty much eat anything…except chicken casserole which we both agree is gross

Other parents: you don’t restrict screen time?

Me: you know 95% of kids will self regulate, given the chance?

other parents:…but, now he’s reading 1984

Me: he has had a university reading level since he was 12, what am i going to do censor his reading material?

other Parents: what if he reads something you don’t approve of..

Me: i fail to see your reasoning…

Me: you know he cooks too..it’s our mother/son time, we talk about his friends…

Yeah, kids talk. If your kid doesn’t talk to you, it’s because of one of two reasons:

You’ve created such a hostile/unwelcoming home environment that they don’t feel comfortable enough to talk

You have signaled to them somehow, some way, that you don’t care about what they have to say. That what they have to say isn’t important.

Kids are not stupid, not at any age level. They pick up on shit and they remember and then when they grow to be teenagers, they know who they can talk to about stuff and who they can’t.

My 13 year old nephew is not particularly affectionate with his mother and he rarely talks to her about anything important, but there are times I can’t get that kid to stop hanging off me and he has those serious conversations with me, like when we discussed his friends coming out to him as bisexual.

It’s not even that hard to make a kid feel loved and welcome. I don’t even know what my nephew is talking about half the time with his games, but they’re important to him, so I let him talk and I make appropriate noises of shock and sympathy when they are needed.

He watches a lot of YT channels, so we’ve discussed the importance of regulating your media, because I don’t want motherfuckers like PewDiePie shaping his world view.

He reads anything from Stephen King to manga and he does that because I’ve been reading him books since he was a baby. I do it with all of my nieces and nephews; when they get school-aged and old enough to read on their own, our “us” time is going to the bookstore and letting them pick out a drink and a book.

Because reading is important to me and I want it to be important to them, too. Now, it’s not something I suggest, it’s something that my nephew asks for.

“I finished my book, Aunt [Dessie], when can we go to the bookstore again?”

And when I tell him a date, I make sure to keep it.

Saying, “You can talk to me about anything” and “you can rely on me” is all well and good, but words are just words. You have to mean it and you have to show them that you mean it.

Here is a secret:

Children and adolescents are actually fucking desperate for adult attention and approval. They really are. Even the ones that have in fact kinda got fucked up so far and have learned that The Only Kind Of Attention They’ll Get Is Bad and so act like shitheads, or the ones that have learned to be inhibited (and it might not even be you who inhibited them, it mighta been their peers or some teacher somewhere, which sucks!) and learned that by showing need they’ll just end up humiliated, or whatever?

Yeah them too.

Kids want to make you happy.

They’re often TERRIBLE AT IT. They’re kids. Their brains don’t work right, their bodies are weird, they have terrible impulse control, horrible deferred satisfaction, they’re shitty at projecting future consequences, and especially if they HAVEN’T been taught they’re probably bad at showing you positive emotions!

They’re BAD AT IT. And they often don’t want anyone to know it. And they’re embarrassed about it.

But they desperately want to. So much.

So one of the most crucial things is:

a) make sure they know how to make you happy. Don’t assume they can figure it out! They probably can’t!

b) make sure that’s something that is literally possible for them to do.

c) make sure, when they do it, that you SHOW THEM YOU’RE HAPPY WITH IT.

People are getting kidnapped, arrested, raped and killed. This has been going on for a few days now but naturally there’s hardly any media coverage.

First thing I thought about when I saw Bulma and Vegeta with them sexehh outfits ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The movie was great! I saw it 4 times, the first of which in jap(yes they did a special original version event, I really love my country sometimes) and I’m doing a ton of fan art about it.
