He caught the smirk before it could be hidden, the knowing glint in those eyes that dared him to push further. It was a challenge spoken without words, confident and unyielding. Aventurine’s lips parted in response, breath hitching once — he never backed away from a wager, and this one had his full attention.

He shifted, deliberately, angling himself just enough to invite, to provoke. It was an unguarded display, intimate in a way that felt almost dangerous, and he knew he would curse himself for it later — if later ever came. Heat flared, sharp and insistent, and he hissed softly through his teeth as he forced his breathing steady. His head dipped forward, lashes lowering as he yielded access on his own terms, not surrender but offering. The sound that slipped from him was low, drawn from deep in his chest, vibrating through him as sensation layered over sensation, blurring into something dizzying.

Fuck. The curse burned behind his teeth, swallowed before it could be spoken, replaced instead by breathy, fractured sounds that betrayed him far more thoroughly. His fingers tangled in his own hair again, grip tightening — not restraint, but grounding. This time it was need that drove the motion, a silent plea written into every tremor: don’t stop. More. His hips began to move with greater intent, faster now, chasing the feeling rather than reacting to it, refusing to remain passive in the exchange.

If this was a dream, or a momentary indulgence born of curiosity, he would still make it count. Aventurine refused to be reduced to something fragile, something pliant. He rolled his hips with purpose, testing limits, deliberately trying to disrupt the General’s balance — another gamble, another challenge laid bare. Can you keep up? The question rang unspoken but unmistakable, carried in every sharp movement, every breath pulled too quickly into his lungs.

The closer he drew to that edge, the harder it became to maintain composure. Sensation spiked, overwhelming, and his control frayed at the seams. When he cried out, it was unrestrained, stripped of polish and pretence — and he made no effort to swallow it back. Aventurine had never been quiet, never believed in denying reaction when it was so thoroughly earned. Whatever the General was drawing from him, he would give freely — not out of submission, but because he wanted to be seen like this.

Unhidden. Unapologetic. And still daring him to take more.

❛❛ has she caused that much trouble ? ❜❜ from what he has heard, bailu, never possessed the ability to remain still for more than a few moments. he had assumed she would be still within the alchemy commissioning, tending patients. unless, she was here for someone else. his gaze settles back onto jing yuan.

❛❛ the same applies to you. ❜❜ there is no softness in how he says it. he has never been particularly skilled at disguising concern beneath gentler words. still, concern exists. one truth remains unavoidable: nothing carries eternity gracefully. ❛❛ there has never been a general who remained in that seat as long as you have. ❜❜

Here, he can't help but laugh.

"Yet people seldom truly do," he replies gently, eyes closing. Behind his eyes, Blade's cool detachment overlays with Yīngxīng's attempts at disaffection. While he doubts the Stellaron Hunter would agree with his estimation, the General cannot help but look at him and the way he walks alongside that Kafka woman and see a slighter, lighter-haired figure in her place. He can also not help seeing Yīngxīng's old hair, as star-bright as his name, in place of this jet black that now reigns.

Yet even then, Yīngxīng had been trouble in his own way- one would simply be hard-pressed to consider him such, with Baiheng and Jǐng Yuán as contemporaries.

"As for her... are you surprised? Her attendants can scarcely keep her contained, when she gets it in her head to take a... constitutional." It is familiar in all the worst, most devastating ways.

Breathing a huff of a laugh, Jǐng Yuán's shoulders lift and fall in a slow, languid motion. Too easy to be genuine in any capacity.

"Yet in this seat I must remain until it no longer has need of me. Don't worry," he doubts the other is, really. Not in the way he might have admitted before, after enough drinks, "I won't linger."

A lie he knows they're both aware of- he already is.

Everything Jingliu expects of him is precise and particular, and while Jǐng Yuán may (on occasion) take many things lightly, her tutelage is not one of them. So he listens as she explains the maintenance of his armor, even though he's heard it a dozen times from instructors in the Cloud Knights as it is. However, if his master is choosing to reiterate it, he knows it's for a reason. More likely than not, he presumes, it's because he will soon find himself in his first assignment without herself or any of the others alongside him.

Whether she's worried, or she simply wants to ensure he's actually worried, it hardly matters.

It is his once more great fortune to have the Luófú's sword champion offering him her council. However, when she suggests going through forms, he finds himself at a loss.

How much does she know about his assignment, for her to ensure his preparation to this extent? He doesn't know if he's allowed to ask. Really, he isn't sure if he's allowed to notice. Jingliu is someone who acts as she pleases, and does not care for her actions to be questioned. Not even by those closest to her, which he is not truly so foolish as to count himself among. Though she is his teacher, she is not a person who considers this fact one that implies closeness.

Even so, he agrees readily with her not-quite suggestion, and bows in gratitude when they finish. Only then does he bother to actually speak, hands loose behind his back, eyes on the false sky visible just beyond the wall.

"Should I be more concerned with my posting than I am, shīfu?" After all, Jingliu has traveled further, fought harder than he has in his few decades. Perhaps she's aware of something he isn't. "Or... if you have any advice..."

His expectations are tempered, but even silence will be better, he thinks, than being given reason to think he has real reason for concern.

"What exactly are ya growin' over there? You tryin' to win the county prize for the biggest pumpkin?" Boothill teases lightly. The garden is mostly flowers and shrubs, but it's hard to believe one person has tended to all this. Graey had a garden also, but nothing like this. "I'd give ya the gold ribbon just for that purdy one right o'there."

Water, prune, weed, repeat.

Jǐng Yuán's hands move with smooth, automatic precision, tending to each plant with a similar, careful pace. Some require a little more water, a little less foliage needlessly draining energy. Some only need to ensure that they aren't being invaded by other, hardier plants- or unwelcome growth. He almost forgets that Boothill is there- would, likely, were it not for the soft clatter of spurs wherever the Ranger walks. The steady thud of metal against soft soil and softer grass. When Boothill actually deigns to speak, Jǐng Yuán lifts his head from his hydrangeas with a slow, subtle tip of his head.

"County prize...?" He supposes it's a colloquialism he's unfamiliar with due to it being from Boothill's homeworld. Even so, he finds the image the concept conjures in his mind amusing. "I'm not so sure I have the skillset required for nurturing vegetables of considerable size." Not entirely true- only that it's not what he'd focused on. Most of his plants are decorative- at least those at the front of the house. Those in the rear garden are more varied, though even then, apart from the herbs, most aren't edible.

Still, it is an amusing thought.

His eyes follow Boothill's gesturing hand to one of his currently-flowering peony bushes and gives a faint, restrained laugh.

"You would, would you?" Straightening from his place beside the hydrangea, he steps toward it, reaching up for one of the large blossoms. Carefully, he plucks it free with the aid of the shears in his back pocket, and then turns, pressing the flower into place atop Boothill's hat, stem set beneath its ribbon to keep it in place. "Does the gold ribbon belong to you now, in that case?" He's not sure if that makes sense, given the hypothetical situation at hand, but saying it is the most amusing option.

Giving the ranger an appraising look, a faint, mischievous sparkle flickers in his eyes.

"...shall we add a few more, just to be sure?"
