kinda funny how Stratt's implied demeanor every time she introduces Grace to very important scientists and world leaders is "this is Ryland Grace, if anything happens to him I'll kill everyone in this room and then myself" and then. adn then she's the thing that happens to him

Thinking about book!Stratt and her impassioned attempt to make Grace understand when he says no, and thinking of Sandra HΓΌller's amazing acting during the chase scene and how she shows her sense of disappointment and betrayal in these beautiful, minute expressions. Thinking of the ways in which Grace betrayed her in so many ways despite the ways in which Grace had time and space to comprehend his unique skills and integrality to the running of the whole project. Thinking of the ways in which Grace's cowardice includes the refusal to face facts and think through not just what came next, but what came After the launch-- thinking through how badly Grace betrayed Eva Stratt, and not the reverse;
Eva Stratt, who took on an impossible burden, willing to go into it all on her own because no one else was willing to shoulder the skies
Eva Stratt, who sought out every possible scientist and engineer and resource able to think big about potential alien life and everything else they would need to combat the threat
Eva Stratt, who makes sure well in advance that she has permission and resources for world-saving work
Eva Stratt, whose selection of a fringe microbiologist with a genius for explaining dense terminology to lay people yields quicker, more productive decisions and avenues for research than any hidebound academic
Eva Stratt, whose microbiologist-teacher-translator understands how to administer too many projects and too many demands on his time and still carves out time to do more because that's what teachers do
Eva Stratt, whose right-hand man has answered, advised, and absolved her as they made horrible decisions that were the most likely to succeed toward the largest and best end of them all
Eva Stratt, who shared almost all of her plans and projects with her fringe microbiologist, teacher, second in command, project partner, her friend
Eva Stratt, who could trust her friend to make sound, difficult, scientifically valid, potential-maximizing decisions on the world's behalf because he loved it as much as she does
Eva Stratt (movie), who cannot be seen to falter or yield if any of this is going to work, takes a long moment of softness to try to offer some kind of assurance, camaraderie that they are all in their separate tasks still all in it together
Eva Stratt, who finds out at the last minute, on the precipice of deadly delay or potentially world-saving success, that her friend is a naive fool and a coward who never understood her or the mission and what was at stake after all
Eva Stratt, who'd hoped she wasn't alone in the willingness to do anything to save as much as they could
Eva Stratt, who found herself alone in making the world's hardest decisions, whose once-co-lead refused to help her make the awful, desperate, necessary decision to kill him together
Eva Stratt, whose friend betrayed her by never thinking all of it through. Betrayed by her right-hand, trusted project co-lead, translator of science bullshit, radical innovator and methodical scientist, who refused to follow the facts all the way to the proof he should have seen long before. Betrayed by her once-friend, now just Crew Member Number Three.
Eva Stratt, who loves the world enough to give up someone who has made her life and her work bearable, even as her once-friend proves his love is not the awful, all encompassing love that both she and the world need
Eva Stratt, who shoots her once-friend and still brilliant and innovative scientist into space anyway, because she has no other choice and now neither does he
Eva Stratt, who stands alone after the launch, and who'd hoped (in the quiet of her carefully cordoned-off heart) that Grace would be by her side-- shouldering the heavens, pushing that boulder, stealing fire over and over until the sun brightened again or they'd wrung out every last gasp
Eva Stratt, who was right in thinking she'd stand alone at the end
I need a thousand fics from the in-canon Eva Stratt Was Right fanclub posthaste.
Eva Stratt watching Graceβs logs of Rocky and them saving the universe: Oh thank GOD I sent Grace instead of going myself, I wouldβve shot that alien on SIGHT. Just-just absolutely demolished him. I wouldβve kept going until I was out of ammo. Wouldβve been my fault we all died but still.
the phm book rules because if youre paying attention rocky is just oozing ptsd at every turn (slaps the top of his carapace) this bad rock can fit so much trauma in him

its a real shame we cant talk about gendered socialization as the violence that it is without some fuckass rocking up like "and thats why trans women arent women!"
like children gendered as girls are fed less and given less opportunities to play and make messes, and children gendered as boys are offered less help and given less emotional support, and this is hurting them! but no actually we need to stop trannies from using the womens washroom
The thing missing from the transphobic analysis is that children gendered as one but perceived to conform more to the other (or to "fail" at their gendered socialization) tend to get a sampler-pack of the worst of both, plus a bunch of outright abuse on top.
The thing about "You dont even have a dog" that I havnt seen anyone mention is that...Even if Grace DID have a family, or pets, children, even if he had a pregnant wife or somthing, Stratt still wouldve forced him into space. And it wouldve been the right thing to do, too. He was the best chance to save humanity.
"You dont have a dog" doesnt mean Stratt actually thought he had any less value because of it, she reas rationalizing because it was a painful choice.

Ryland Grace and Eva Stratt are the perfect examples of you either die a hero or live to become a villain.
Grace is sent to space, from humanities perspective dying a hero. Whether they recieve the video logs or not, he is considered to have died in space on a trip to save humanity.
But if he Hadnt- if he had lived to the world's knowledge, then as no.2 on the project hed probably be taken down with Stratt once society needed someone to blame. Alternatively, if stratt listened to his refusal to go he would have been painted a cowardly villain for not commiting suicide for humanity.
Stratt is the hero up until she isnt. She runs the taskforce that us going to save them all, she makes the hard decisions nobody else wants to, and at the end of it all she is given a life scentence in prison, blamed for the very decisions she was placed to make. She was societies' villain because once their heroes were off dying they needed someone else to blame.
I was thinking about Project Hail Mary and I thought of this conversation that definitely happened on the way to Erid:
Grace: "It feels weird to call your planet by a name humans gave it. I know I can't pronounce the real name but can you tell me what it means?"
Rocky: "Rocky will tell Grace, but first Grace must tell Rocky meaning of 'Earth'."
Grace: "Well, uh, it sort of means 'ground'."
Rocky: "Boring!"
Grace: "Okay smart guy, what's your planet's name mean then?"
Rocky: "..."
Grace: "..."
Rocky: "..."
Rocky: "Ground."
Dr. Ratthi goes on a research survey with non-Preservation researchers. They're on a very inhospitable planet, with lots of superstorms and poison gas. They have a little hub that they stay in and do their work from, with short expeditions outside in protective gear.
And then in a stroke of genuine bad luck, their transport off planet, communication relays, and some life support functions are destroyed in a storm. Almost all of them are convinced they're going to starve to death and die.
All of them except Dr. Ratthi, who is completely chill. They dismiss his certainty that they'll be rescued as him just being a naive optimist from a backwater polity who doesn't know the first thing about real life.
He keeps insisting, "Oh, don't worry, my friends will come get us!" Even though they'll run out of water and food before anyone even notices that something is wrong.
And then in the middle of the fourth day after the accident, during yet another superstorm, someone knocks on the entrance.
It's straight out of a horror movie. They should be alone on this planet. They should be alone. There is a deadly storm outside. Nothing human can be out there, and yet something is at their door.
They know it's not a rescue. A rescue would be coming from off-planet, and there is no one, nothing, that would have the calculation ability to safely navigate a hopper through those winds -
And while they're almost all frozen, processing their terror and the implications, Dr. Ratthi jumps up, and goes to cycle the habitat's airlock to let whatever it is in. He's all happy golden-retriever energy, all "I told you my friends were coming! I can't wait for you to meet them!"
And before anyone can stop him -
Two SecUnits enter. Two SecUnits that have to be rogue, based off of their literally everything.
This really does feel like the start of a horror movie, or maybe the middle of a horror movie, complete with the scene where a dumbass lets the monster in, but then -
One of the SecUnits immediately starts yelling at Ratthi about stupid planets and stupid lowest-bidder equipment and stupid safety protocols and stupid humans who accept stupid research missions.
The other is like. "We should leave soon. The transport is irate, and the longer we spend here, the less concerned it will be with our comfort when it calculates our ascent through the atmosphere."
And that's how Dr. Ratthi's colleagues find out that this guy, this naive-from-middle-of-nowhere guy, somehow has best friends who are overprotective constructs. And at least one of those friends may have chipped him like a dog.

my favorite genre of fictional character is like "i am terrifying to almost everyone, i'm very good at killing, i can endure anything, i've become exceptionally good at playing into my reputation, and if you try to give me positive social interaction i will react with confusion and cower in a corner like an abused animal. and i may try to shoot you. but there is also a chance i may imprint on you like a feral dog receiving its first loving touch! good luck."
