I'm now at the end of episode 5 and I've slowly come to realise I seem to have blindly believed people bashing Dunk's acting, and kinda put off starting this series partially because of that :/

Yeah sure he has improved, and also matured a lot since SIMM. My first series with him and Joong was The Heart Killers, and I just finished Dare You to Death, so this is my third series with them - and Joong has grown too, I've known him since 2Moons2 (he was a BABY back then, I have such a soft spot for his Ming too).

But like considering some of the comment's I've seen over the years I was bracing myself for the most wooden, stilted acting ever and...

Dunk's acting is fine here?? Yeah maybe he wont win any oscars for this role but neither will any of the other actors/actresses, it's not that kind of story

like i'm kinda baffled, what exactly was people's problem with Dunk here??

op, let me tell you, as someone who was watching simm live from ep2 onwards (not knowing who any of the two were) and was immediately enchanted by joongdunk's refreshing dynamic (back in early 2022 it felt really new and different ngl), joong's fascinating stage (more like camera?) presence, and dunk's ability to the most shining ball of sunshine ever it just made me so incredibly sad to see how people at the time were putting it down on account of it being "basic" and "boring" and were shitting on dunk's acting so much, because i was sitting here enjoying it a lot. i've been a vocal simm defender for years and it's so incredibly delightful that people are finally giving it a chance. that this cute little show is finally getting the love and recognition it deserves. is it a groundbreaking plot? no, of course not. but it also never tries to be. that's not the point of this series. this series is here to be cute and to make you feel good. and in that it most definitely succeeds

But over time, he amassed so many ideas he had to write them down on little notes in fear he´d forgot any one of them otherwise

All seems fine with this arragement at first, but as the seasons turn, Xie Lian realizes with slight panic that the number of random ideas he gets dwindle by the day

Perhaps it´s his weary mind, growing heavier with silent grief everyday; perhaps it´s the way he confines himself to the inside on some of his worse days instead of going outside to get some new inspiration; but whatever it is, he doesn´t like what´s happening. He doesn´t like it at all.

Eventually, he writes: "I want to tell San Lang I love him" over and over again in place of new activities when he has truly run dry of ideas for good

Pages upon pages — all written over the duration of days, weeks, months — contain that one centence countless times, almost like a mantra. But he can´t stop, Xie Lian tells himself. He can´t.

Because if he does,...If he admits he has nothing left to say...isn´t it like giving up hope that they could ever do those things together...?
