Can I ask you some advice on making red-figure stuff? No pressure ofc.
Mine has turned out nice-ish (clay color-wise) so far, (bisque fired at 900โ, IIRC), but I wish I could make them less porous, the black more glossy, and the clay itself to be a little brighter/oranger.
So, what clay and underglaze (?) do you use? What temperature do you fire your stuff at? Do you glaze them or not?
Hi! Sorry Iโm getting to this so late. I completely missed it somehow. Answers under the cut, since I tend to go long.
So different clays mature at different temperatures. I use Lagunaโs Red B-Mix with Grog, a mid-fire stoneware. I bisque it to ฮ05 (1046 ยฐC ish), then glaze fire (but no glaze, generally) to ฮ5 (1196 ยฐC). I use Coyote Clay & Colorโs black underglaze, which is formulated for mid- to high-fire ceramics, so it doesnโt actually turn black until it hits ฮ5. In the photo, the teapot is unfired greenware, and the ornament is bisqueware.
I say I fire them to ฮ5, but I kind of under fire them. Flat sherds I fire face down which helps keep the red brighter rather than going brown. I try to protect pots from the elements by shielding them with other pots or kiln furniture. Iโve found some ways to bring out the color of the clay in a way I want, but at a certain point, weโre limited by the clay itself, if we donโt want to use underglaze for that, too.
I do use a clear glaze on the inside of mugs and cups or anything thatโs meant to hold liquid (and will on this teapot), but thatโs mostly for ease of cleaning, and itโs what people expect from functional, modern pottery. I used to resent it because it looks very different from the outside, but Iโve gotten over it lol. I donโt glaze the whole thing because it turns my clay quite brown, which kind of ruins the vibe of what Iโm going for.
I also have this sealant called Liquid Quartz. I put it on the inside of bowls that are decorated in the middle, but given how vitrified the stoneware is, itโs really not necessary on anything else. I do want to mess around with some low fire clay in the future, though, so Iโd definitely use it for that.
But ultimately, different clays and different underglazes will look different as they mature. I started off using Amacoโs Jet Black underglaze, but it seemed to darken the red areas around it at ฮ5. Iโve made some plant watering spikes out of bisqueware and I used it on those, and it did fine! Point being, trial and error and maybe finding a way to repurpose error. (One note on those plant watering spikes: they molded and mossed and mushroomed. I want to make some more, and Iโll put that Liquid Quartz stuff on the top half to see how it does.) Different underglazes will range from matte to satin without a glossy clear on top, depending on brand and temperature.
And lastly (I mentioned I tend to go long, right?), Iโve recently started sanding my pots with a fine grit sandpaper once theyโre done. I used to be averse to it since I didnโt want to mess up the painting, but Iโve gotten better at applying a thick coat, and I mostly do it in the bigger negative spaces. This isnโt really pertinent to your question, but Iโve found it worth it in my process.

I'm finally weaving again! I forgot how fun this hack lace pattern is. I'm about halfway through the scarf, though I need to recalculate how long I want it to be (the warp seems ... long).
I've ordered a warping wheel with my birthday money, which should arrive end of this week hopefully. I really want to try it out and already have my next project picked out, but that means this one needs to leave the loom :)
I've made barely any progress on the Ranunculus, it is so hot I don't want to be anywhere near even a summer sweater.
Instead I have been spinning like crazy! I totally missed tour de fleece, but since I've unpacked the Victoria I keep getting sucked in and have made great progress! I'm just worried I'll finish plying before spinning group in two weeks, and I don't have another project I really want to spinn...

The Bering Strait is only 82km and surprisingly shallow. According to Wikipedia's list of longest bridges, longer ones have been built, though the longest sea crossing is only 55km (the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge). The extreme weather probably provides its own design challenges, but wouldn't it be cool to be able to go anywhere on the northern hemisphere only by train!
Y'all for real please do these. Even if you're certain your posture doesn't suck. One day you will wake up with impinged shoulder pain like I did and let me tell you it fucking HURTS. Do these exercises even just once a week and it will make such a difference. Especially my fellow creatives out there, stop shrimping over your work and go do these right now. RIGHT NOW.
Also, if youโre even a little concerned about getting a hump or having trouble standing fully upright in your old age, this is how you prevent that. If you want to be up and about when youโre old you have to start when youโre younger. And keep in mind there is no bad time to start and itโs never too late. Starting today is way better than never starting at all.

a weaving based on Dora Wheeler's "Penelope Unraveling Her Work at Night", which is one of my favorite works that looks woven but is actually embroidered. I wanted to try out deborah silver's split-shed weaving technique, so I chose polychrome taquetรฉ with linen and cashmere. I maybe should have chosen an easier technique with fewer colors to start, but here we are! on the right side, I left the uppermost warp threads bare to show the unraveling.

Since everyone has a different tastes, Iโve decided to offer up a choice of quilts for the winner to pick from.
Option 1 is a 77โx103โ queen size quilt made with a bright floral on a pastel dot background. It also has a soft and thick backing, making the quilt heavy and warm.
Option 2 is a 74โx94โ skinny queen quilt in dramatic halloween colours and sugar skulls. The vibrant purple backing is beautiful!
Option 3 is a 89โx89โ queen size rainbow stars on black background with a gorgeous teal backing. One of my favourites of all time, honestly.
Option 4 is a 84โx100โ queen size space themed quilt with a royal blue backing and gold quilting.
Option 5 is a 85โx92โ queen size red and gold chandelier quilt with a fun dark red/orange/pink backing.
Sometimes the quickest, simplest projects are also the coolest. I made some wire vases to hold some fake flowers to use as table centerpieces. It's just a single twist of 12-gauge steel but the result is very pretty.
A while back my mother was asking me about waterproof fabric because she wanted to make an apron, and shortly afterward I happened across a kit for making a waterproof dopp bag, including the fabric. It was an inexpensive way to see how well the fabric handled so I bought the kit.
The process of making the bag is simple enough and the instructions clear enough that I've been using them, along with fabric from old worn-out shirts and pajamas, to practice my sewing: precise cutting, even seaming, sewing zippers, chalk marking. It's made for some very floppy kit bags with some admittedly uneven edges, but it's been fun practice.

Having some more chill days for myself, working on fiber art things when I can. I got through canvas warp separator 1 of 2 but I donโt think that means Iโm halfway, maybe 1/3? Iโve gotten pretty fast at the pattern but itโs more so that I just canโt do it for longer than an hour at a time right now. Iโll take the hour so Iโm still making progress. Knitting has also been slow but steady, finally got to shaping the arm holes for the back panel. I honestly like cabling now that I can do it without checking the pattern every five seconds.
This project is definitely a marathon and not a sprint, but Iโve finally gotten far enough that I can get a better picture of the โrightโ side. Itโs definitely going faster now that Iโve figured out the rhythm of the design a little more but weโre still talking like. Two inches an hour.
Very cool technique! Looking forward to doing more (with wool instead of cotton) in the future. The material makes a pretty significant difference in design legibility.
My mother has claimed this one which is fine by me since itโs mostly been an experiment anyways.
I am! Iโve done bandweaving with this thread before so I already knew it likes to be at around 48 wpi (so for my 12 wpi reed Iโm putting 4 strings in each slot).
Pros: way easier to wind on this much thread than on my teeny little tablet weaving loom.
Cons: wish it was faster. Totally thought it was going to be so much faster because pedals but no.
Probably will invest in an inkle loom so I can use my floor loom for cool floor loom things but otherwise it works pretty well.
