Look how nicely my travel crafting kit came together this time!
Everything is secured to the case, at least loosely, so I should be able to open it and work on a bus or in an airport without worrying about anything bouncing out and getting lost. The ziplock is to keep the pieces of my current project contained since they aren't attached to each other yet. Once I build more, I should be able to just zip the case closed around it.

Testing out a new design I might use for a belt or arm-band or straps or the like:
Front (left) and back (right) are nearly identical, but not quite. On the front side the thicker vertical coils are raised above the thinner horizontal wires, so they stand out more, and there are gaps between the sections of the vertical coils. I'm calling that the front because I think the higher contrast between thick and thin looks better. On the back everything is smoother. Not sure if that reads from a distance though.
The design is surprisingly springy. I bent the gold-colored one into an arm-band and it's flexible enough that I can just shove my arm through the gap and it closes again.
I'm still deciding how I feel about this design. I'm hoping to land in the ballpark of dwarf fantasy aesthetic, but I'm worried the design will blur into a bland undifferentiated blob at a distance rather than looking cool and intricate. Even more than usual I'd love to hear any feedback people have on how it looks!

This year's noisemaker!
(I wanted to add this as a reblog of the clicky device that was a prototype for this but of course tumblr can't put videos in reblogs.)
It's the same basic design as last year's noisemaker, but it's got a fancier handle and the ratchet-gear is simpler to make this way, so I'm quite happy with this improvement

Digging up a bunch of the little odds and ends that I've made over the years and putting them in one place:
Most of these were quick experiments to try out a technique, or components for projects I never built. So I usually forget about them. It's only when I gather them all together that I remember how cool they are in their own right. Giant collection of shiny objects!
Behold the glory that is EL wire!
This pauldron is still very much in progress, but it's far enough along to show off! Just ignore the super thin copper wires holding everything in place. Left side with the single copper circle is the front, right side with two circles is the back.
It's shoulder shaped! With cool copper designs! And GLOWING BLUE!
Under the cut I've got some photos of what it looks like with the glow turned off. Next step: fill in all the flat surfaces with structural filigree so that it looks like single a solid object.
Visited some friends with the intent of working on my latest armguard project. But they were working on setting up their Christmas tree. Well alright then:
A sphere bauble and an octahedron bauble!
For an impromptu project in just two days they came out very well. And maybe next year I'll actually plan for this and can bring some glass gems to incorporate too!
Got distracted by a neat idea and I figured I'd spend an hour exploring it. Three hours later, here we are! Feels a little flimsy but I love the design.
I say flimsy but really it's probably stronger than I think. I'm just spoiled by my usual steel.
It's hard to tell in the pics but it's about 3.5 inches tall. I didn't finish off either end, so I can add more segments if I want. Overall it's suspiciously armband-sized and armband-shaped. Which could mean nothing.
Building a wire armguard is one of my longest running projects because no matter how many time I build one I'm never satisfied with the results. Half the time I don't even finish a given design before giving up, only to try again a few months later. Even when I do finish one I find myself trying again a few months later.
Statistically this one will probably not be the final success either, but at least it's gotten further than the last few! And it does have the advantage of simplicity: the pieces can slide past each other to accommodate my wrist motion, but they can't flop around in other directions because they're strapped to my arm.*
I've got the first section pretty much done and most of the design work laid out for the other two. So (fingers crossed) all I need to do is wire up the "surface" of the other two sections, and probably add cloth backing and padding, and I'll be good to go!
* (I can't even describe how stupid I feel for never thinking of this design before. I've been building complicated circular bearings to hold everything rigidly in place and meanwhile my arm is a straight stick that's right there. And I need to strap the armguard to it anyway. Gah.)

Having just tried using a Dremel for the first time in my life (yes, really):
The cutter/engraver head is very good at making scooped-out gouges in things. The channel it leaves is very rounded. Not great for inlaying wire into wood but great for recessing two thick wires across each other like lincoln logs.
The "cutting wheels" do cut steel but they are TERRIFYING. Sparks everywhere. Not great on a WOODEN homemade workbench IN MY LIVING ROOM. Maybe useful for sheet metal, maybe, but for wire I'll stick to pliers.
The grinding/sanding/polishing attachments make things so shiny! Not sure how often I'll use it, in practice, but very cool capability to have. I'm a little worried about dust and ventilation though, even with a mask, because LIVING ROOM.
I don't quite understand the drills. I already have a perfectly good drill.
I'll probably try to pick up some routing bits to see if I can find something better for inlays.
All in all, it doesn't quite line up with the problems I usually encounter, which I'm a little disappointed about, but still pretty neat to have. With luck it will open up new and exciting problems that it can be the solution to!
One trip to the hardware store later, I now have bits for cutting square slots. Flat bottom, vertical walls, about the right width for my copper wire. They're basically end-mills, and I've basically built a router. But it seems to work!

Neat little prototype of some moving linkages. Prototype for what? No idea yet. But it's a cool type of motion so hopefully I can find a use for it.
This was supposed to be a quick side project: make a few gears, throw them into a frame so that they'll move and look cool, call it a day. Unfortunately, the frame took frustratingly many tries, and the spinning arm is taking even more than the frame. The precise sizes of stuff matters a LOT when trying to get gears to mesh nicely. Who'd have guessed!
I'm still not satisfied with what i have now. It sticks and jams rather than running smoothly. But after three consecutive weekends of "I just need to re-make one more component and I'll be done", I should take my victories where I can get them. It IS a Contraption! It DOES spin! And it DOES look cool doing it!
Tiny little phone case charms! @themikecollective commissioned me to try to make some extremely small pretty things, which was a fun challenge. The biggest two are only 1.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm!
From back to front: two flattish glass gems (red and blue); three cages for blue glass spheres; and then two pure wire constructs.
This was a fun little break. I've been doing a lot of functional mechanisms recently, so it was nice to make something that's just pretty!

Step 1: gear-like wheel with odd number of teeth. As in "not an even number of teeth", to be clear. The teeth are also oddly shaped but that's a totally separate reason.
Step 2: sliding bar. I didn't feel like waiting until I knew the size and shape of slider I'd need, so I made it removable. The U-shaped piece of copper slots in from the bottom to lock the slider into its channel. It can slide but can't escape until I remove the copper again.
Step 3 is not a pendulum to push the bar back and forth. It couldn't reliably put enough force on the bar to overcome friction, not without being unreasonably heavy.
