There are objectively more reasons to argue for dog!harry or bird!harry or even shark!harry than there ever will be for cat Harry, and a lot of them are excellent. So I understand why it isn't as popular. I can explain my reasoning, though.

Harry/Cat similarities:

Jamrock Shuffle/Containers - It's strongly implied if not explicitly canon that Harry invented the Jamrock Shuffle. At the very least he implements it. This involves an emphasis on containers. Harry investigates and goes inside various containers throughout the game. Cats are well-known to be drawn to containers and exhibit a similar fascination with them.

Acrobatics - It is possible in the game for Harry to demonstrate acrobatic talents. His spin-kick, scaling tall buildings, and making great leaps (and sticking the landing!) are more cat-coded than dog-coded.

Chinese Translation - I've been told that Harry meows in the Chinese translation of the game.

Leopard Mindset - Leopards are a kind of cat and "*this*" is the kind of animal Harry "wants to be"

Psychic Abilities - this is a cat thing, not a dog thing

Fashion-Forwardness - cat

Reaction Speed - catlike!-reflexes

Savoir Faire - This is literally just a walking cat stereotype. "Sneak under their noses. Stun with immense panache." "Cool for: Acrobats, Thieves, Unbearable Show-Offs." The entire thing. Cat!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Negatives of Dog!Harry

I only know 3 or four breeds of dog and none of them look like Harry.

Every suggested dog breed that I've heard looks nothing like him either.

For every thoughtful, loving, well-crafted dog Harry (which I cherish) there is always someone with a take that boils down to "harry is OBVIOUSLY a dog because he is UGLY, BOORISH, and SMELLY" and I don't love that

again. re my point on the recruitment ending: its the most telling moment in the game. that he had nothing in his life in the 57th that he valued more than harry. Devastating. hes a war orphan who lost his partner violently years ago and has bad enough ptsd that being around juvenile deliquents stresses him out instinctually.
