@hisnewera continued from here.
It was long past midnight, but the president gave no verbal sign that he had worked enough for today, yet all the physical signs were there. The way he tried to blink away the tiredness or how he lightly swayed in his chair. It was nothing new to Tseng. They had been working partners for years now, he was the presidentâs right-hand man, he even dared to say he knew the man better than most anyone, but that didnât mean he was able to control the stubborn man.
Tseng most likely looked as tired as Rufus himself, but he would not retire for the night before the man he served did. He was used to after hours, as a Turk he was simply always on duty, so he would definitely stay until the president finally decided to get some rest, and when the moment finally came Tseng was relieved. Yes, Rufus was the president now and he had a lot of work to do with rebuilding his fatherâs broken empire and on top of that the looming threat of Sephiroth, but being the president also made him the most important man in the world, and Tseng couldnât have Rufus die from exhaustion because he refused to rest.
âI will take you back to your place right away, Sir. Allow me to say that I think you need to take more breaks. You wonât do yourself or anyone a favour by working yourself to the bone already.â
The leader of the Turks was usually a man who kept most of his thoughts to himself, he had learned that much since he started working for Shinra, but he shared a rather trusting bond with the president and knew he could speak freely around him.
Eventually they reached the presidentâs fancy white car and he held the door open for Rufus before slipping into the driverâs seat. It amused him how Rufus trusted him to drive without question, while Reno was permanently banned from the seat behind the wheel, he was just way too reckless.
âYou really donât owe me dinner, Sir, I am just glad you finally decided to rest.â
Tseng said that in a matter of fact voice, his professional voice, but he still smiled gently, a smile only reserved for Rufus.
@slumberingchaos asked: one muse takes a blow meant for the other // to Genesis from Seph
The degradation was getting worse and worse with every day and slowly but surely it started to become a real issue. The pain of the non-healing cut in his shoulder was now spreading down his arm and back and his body started to feel heavier with every passing day, making it more and more difficult to get out of bed and continue his fight for vengeance. And his search for a cure. On top of that there was Hollander who was telling him day in and out that he was so close to finding a cure, sweet talking Genesis with promises he most likely would not be able to keep. But the crimson poet was growing desperate.
Genesis stood in the bathroom of the little house in Under Junon he and Hollander were currently occupying to hide away from Shinra, and a look in the mirror was showing him just how grave things were going for him. There was another strand of white decorating his former fiery auburn hair, it was another proof of how he was slowly running out of time, every passing day leaving him weaker. The former SOLDIER sighs, washing his face before the sound of breaking glass caught his attention.
âHollander?â, he calls out for his unpleasant companion, rolling his eyes at his uselessness. The scientist probably broke another glass. When he didnât get a reply he noticed how eerily quiet it was, usually Hollander would curse and complain, but there was no sound in the house. Something was wrong. And then it happened. Genesis saw movement of a person dressed in black out of the corner of his eyes and he barely managed to dodge the bullet aiming for his head.
âFuck!â, he cursed under his breath and he barely had enough time to think about it. Before his attacker, who was very obviously a Turk, could attack him again Genesis threw himself out of the bathroom window to escape. It was still early morning, so there werenât any people on Under Junonâs streets, but Genesis saw the three other Turks waiting for him, of course they were expecting him to flee.
Genesis could feel his wing sprout from his shoulder, but he was too weakened to fly without the medicine Hollander usually was providing him with in the morning, so all he could do was run. And the Turks followed. It was a rather short and uneventful chase, with them shooting at him without Genesis having the chance to escape or fight back. His body was too weak to fly or cast magic, his red rapier abandoned in his bedroom and when he found himself cornered, back against a wall Genesis could only growl.
The crimson poet forced a smile on his face as he stared at the guns pointed at him, knowing that the bullets would pierce his body and end his life any moment now. How did they even find him here? He had been so careful to not leave any traces, but he knew the Turks were even better than their reputation. If only he had been able to convince some of them to join his cause instead..
Genesis squeezed his eyes shut, rage and bitterness burning in his stomach. Oh, how he hated them. How he hated that they abused him and turned him into a monster, he hated how they would get away with killing him, how they would celebrate defeating him. He wanted them dead, all of them!
When he heard the gunshots he prepared himself for pain, pain that wouldnât come. And when he opened his eyes again his chest ached with a mixture of longing and disappointment. Genesis stared at the familiar back, at the long silver mane, at the long and elegant sword in his hand that he had used to block the bullets. Sephiroth. But what was he doing here? Why was he protecting him?
âSephirothâ, Genesis whispered breathlessly, his voice almost leaking with reverence. Despite everything that happened, he had never lost his admiration for the fine silver general, but seeing him again only reminded him how badly he had wanted his old friend to turn his back on Shinra, with him. And how he had been denied.
âWhat are you doing here?â, he added, now trying to put the old venom back in his voice, he couldnât allow Sephiroth to see him weak and defenseless, and he already wanted to shove him to the side, when he noticed the blood covering the silver SOLDIERâs shoulder and stomach. He had deflected the bullets, but not all of them. He got hurt. Because of Genesis.
âYou are bleeding..â
Ignoring the Turks before them he slightly pulled Sephiroth behind him, turning so he could face him, his fingers taking a hold of the silver oneâs chin so he could look into his eyes. The old rage now burning fiercely inside his chest once more.
âI am going to kill them.â With his bare hands if he had to.

more or less plotted starter for @ishguardienne
Whenever Haurchefant sneaked out of the Fortemps manor at night guilt would settle down heavily inside his chest. He was not too worried about getting in trouble, he was only his fatherâs illegitimate son, therefore a stain on the Fortempsâ name, or that was at least what his stepmother usually called him. The young Elezen often thought that maybe his father and brothers would be better off without him, maybe he should just grab his things and leave. There was no one that would miss him anyways, was there?
Haurchefant shook his head, trying to banish those unwelcome thoughts from his mind. No, even if he was not wanted, he could still make himself useful, he could still help raising Emmanellain and make sure he would turn into a fine man. He could still run errands for Artoirel. He would do anything to earn their respect and affection. It was a childish dream and he knew he would most likely only able to fulfill it if he managed to become a member of the Temple Knights. But that dream was so far away, one could even say it was untouchable for the bastard son of a noble man.
But it was also the reason he made his way through Ishgard this night, his firm steps echoing on the snow-covered pavement. None of the guards paid attention to him, too focused on keeping themselves warm by walking back and forth. He was about to meet up with Iphenne, the daughter of a war veteran, and her dream of becoming a knight was pretty much as unattainable as his, which was the exact reason they would meet up at night whenever they could to train together. Haurchefant kept his head down as he approached Skysteel Manufactory, using the backdoor to enter the building.
Haurchefant would forever be grateful for Stephanivien granting him and Iphenne permission to train down in the cellar of the manufactory, because he as well knew what it was like to follow a dream everyone else would just laugh about, what with him working on guns and drones while his father basically begged him to pick up a sword and become a knight.
If only it were so easy for Iphenne and Haurchefant. Lighting a candle the young Elezen made his way down the stairs, being careful where to step as Stephanivien was prone to letting his stuff lay around. Descending the final step Haurchefant noticed the wooden practice swords resting against the wall already, but his companion was nowhere to be seen, so he quietly called out into the darkness:
âIphenne? Are you there?â
itâs been too long since I caused trouble

It was difficult discerning just when the Lord Commander ever had time away from his liege, but patience- As always- had paid off. His blades were coated in a fast acting poison that would kill a bear in five steps, so he didn't anticipate much of a fight once he struck true.
His footsteps mirrored the other male's, soft and soundless, but masked by the click of the Lord Commander's boots against the hewn stone.
Taking a slow building breath into his lungs, the assassin advanced in the blink of an eye- His twin daggers were aimed straight for the nape of that slender neck and hungry for blood.
It was rare these days that the king would leave his castle, waiting for his Godâs plan to be set in motion and advance, so most of the time they would stay idle and watch the other nations grow desperate as the Blight continued to spread across the world. But to Sleipnir and Barnabas it didnât matter, they were waiting for Ultima to turn this ruined world into his paradise, and as the king happily played his role in that it was Sleipnirâs job to support his liege as best as possible. That was what he always did and always would do.
Today was no different. Barnabas was locked away in his chamber, talking to Ultima or whatever the God had in mind on this particular day, but there were no assignments to go on, so Sleipnir had nothing else to do than wander the corridors, making sure that everything was in order for the next step in their plan to prepare Mythos for his reunion with Ultima.
The slender male sighed, not looking forward to another uneventful day, but maybe it would not stay as boring as he feared, because the commander couldnât shake off the feeling that someone was watching him. And not only watching him, no, there was someone with him in this very moment. A small smile spread out on his lips as he casually tilted his head to the side, that way evading the dagger that was just about to pierce his flesh. In a swift motion he grabbed the wrist of his attacker and expressed his strength by tossing him over his shoulder and to the ground in front of him to get a proper look at him.
âHmmâ, Sleipnir purred, finally interest was sparkling in his eyes, maybe a good fight would distract him from the awfully boring day, and he kept his eyes on his nimble attacker as he crossed his arms in front of his chest, clicking his tongue in disappointment.
âSo, what do we have here? An Imperial rat?â

SLEIPNIR HARBARD â Lord Commander of the Kingdom of Waloed's armies, Harbard is known to many as the Constant Knight, by reason of his unchangingly icy demeanor, and his unwavering loyalty to his liege. Indeed, he appears to command Barnabas' complete trust, having been gifted full command of the Royal Order of Knight despite his apparent youth. The capacity in which he evacuated Hugo Kupka from Rosalith Castle, however, remains a mystery.

Rufus and Heidegger (@cwarscars) are on a date.
his eyes stalk the former-president from the car; a glare saved for tseng despite a weakness that whispers to him not to bother. why hold onto the rage of yesterday? an anger that had once caused so much suffering?
thereâs a stubborn side to heidegger. a cruel ache that urges him to spit and curse at the turk. a harsh ringing of whispers in his ear - âwalk away, fuck them. to hell with them all-â and perhaps if things hadnât have happened as they had, heâd give in to the urge of bitter suggestion. heâd turn on heels the moment he parts from the car; wander away once more, submerge himself in the shadows of the slums. hope that the darkness would swallow him up and have him disappear - as if it hadnât already taken so much from him.
instead, the former-general has wounds that sting with each and every step, aching bones and a heavy heart - a body that carries him behind rufus and company with slow steps, despite a conflicted mind. by the time they reach the door, and by extension, reno - heâs almost too tired to care for the redheadâs lacklustre reaction to seeing him.
well, what had he expected? a welcoming party? a big thank you for all of his efforts toiling away time amongst the bold and brilliant? he knows that soon enough, the suits will want to question him - theyâll want answers for the fuck up at junon. the deaths of their comrades. perhaps - should they be the smart sort - theyâll ask him why he once basked in evil? how a man could become so corrupted, heâd choose to corrupt all of those around him, too.
heidegger would wait for those questions. but for now - he instead follows alongside his former president and into the small room provided. a thank you on his lips though one that doesnât quite find the volume to express anything aside from a nod.
âi-â i want nothing, is honestly what he wants to say. i deserve nothing, is the thought that lingers. ânever mind me, mr presi-â he clears his throat, a dart of eyes toward a window overlooking yet another lonely slum ârufus.â old habits die hard and with that he thinks, you canât teach an old dog new tricks.
he sighs, unwilling to let rufus in on his train of thought but taken aback enough by the otherâs hospitality that he is willing to spare the blonde more than just a few words.
âiâve-â he hesitates; a man once so reluctant to unveil anything other than anger. for him to turn to rufus, hazel eyes a glimmer with a worn gold - his lips twisted with the aged sadness of an old soldier - is revelation enough. âall iâve done is rest. exhaust my own exhaustion. await the day when someone - anyone - decides to take vengeance upon me.â hell, rufus ( or even his turks ) could certainly be contenders. âiâve longed for death-â a man that the blonde wouldnât recognise speaks until heidegger snaps himself from a musing with a flicker of lids and clear of his throat; his gaze shoots back toward the other, a new found strength - or perhaps a false enthusiasm.
âtell me; tell me where you need me or what you want me to do and-â thereâs perhaps a twinge of enthusiasm in that long worn voice, the spark of a fire that begs for fuel âand iâll surely do it.â
The former general surely looked as uncomfortable in this small room as Rufus felt. This had to be so new. No longer could they look down upon the thousands of people trying to survive in the slums while they had been the kings of the topside, no longer did they have the luxury of king size beds or having whole buildings to themselves to reside in. They were as ordinary as everyone else now, only their names would betray now that they once used to belong to the royalty of society.
Being in the presence of Heidegger made the room feel even smaller than it already was. There was a tension between them, so much had happened between them, so many things left unsaid, and now to be around one another again.. it was difficult to think of a way to act. Should he pretend their past had never happened? Should he treat Heidegger like any other man that was seeking shelter here at Healen Lodge? Ah, how frustrating it was. Rufus could hear the other man sigh, he was probably struggling to think of what to say just like the former president was.
For a moment neither of them spoke, both pairs of eyes just stubbornly looking out of the window as if they desperately tried to look at anything but each other. Maybe it was better like this. If they didnât speak to each other. Rufus was pretty certain one of the Turks was lingering outside the door, not with their ear pressed against the wood, but still close enough to hear what was spoken. He couldnât blame them. They were Turks, it was in their nature to spy, and he knew they had his best interest at heart, they didnât trust Heidegger, so they wanted to make sure the former war dog would not start biting again.
Then when Heidegger finally speaks again the stoic masquerade he had put on for the last hour or so was slipping. âIâve longed for death..â
No, Rufus wanted to tell him. You canât leave me again. You are still needed. But before the foolish part of him could express that the older one asked once more what Rufus wanted him to do. Did he not understand yet? The time to ask for orders and guidance was over. Now they had to learn to see each other as humans with their own free will, their own wants and wishes for the future. But yes, Rufus understood. It was difficult to dare to dream of a future when the guilt inside oneâs heart was telling someone they deserved to die. In a way it was the same for Rufus. Why dare to try and be a good man if he would die soon anyways.
âMagnar..â, Rufus finally said, speaking the other manâs name so gently it was barely audible. âIt is not about what I want anymore, it is about what you think is right. It is about how you think you can turn this world into a better place.â
Rufus finally dared to face the other man once more, but he kept his hand on the windowsill to keep himself from swaying as the exhaustion from the day finally was catching up to him.
âAnd you know.. even if you are not interested in changing this world for the better, you are welcome to stay here. I owe you that much.â
Fuck. Now he sounded pathetic. But the time for games was over. Rufus already prepared himself to be laughed at for showing the slightest sign of weakness, he knew his father and the old Heidegger certainly would have laughed, but Rufus tried to do better, he really did. So if Heidegger had trouble to decide, Rufus would help him by suggesting something:
âHow do you feel about taking a bath while I search for something to eat for you? And for a spare set of clothes, the ones you are currently wearing are in desperate need of washing.â
Rufus tried to sound casual, like it wasnât a big deal, and in a way it certainly wasnât, but offering help and assistance like that still often brought a wave of anxiety with it. If his father would see him like this, offering help instead of demanding people to tend to his every need, he certainly would have punished him. But no.. he was gone, there was no need to be afraid anymore. Slowly he lifted his gaze to Heidegger once more, hoping his mask did not slip enough to reveal how troubled he really was.
rufusâ words are as direct as heidegger remembers them ; the blondeâs inflection forever marred by his penchant for honesty. any man could appreciate that, any man could be hurt by it. all in all, heidegger knows that what the other says is true. there is no forgiveness for his actions yesterday. a man once drunk on power and high off of loyalty. a collar around his neck and the tag reading - âattack dogâ - heidegger had taken his role seriously. taken it further than that. thrived in the chaos that came with war, watched as young men marched to their deaths. pined for more. more, more, more.
a manâs bond only found through pain - heâd thought himself able to shape otherâs the same way he had once been made. put them through hell soâs they come out the other side demons. a demon like him. ( and in truth, so many never came out the other side - so many, perhaps, spared ).
the only retort to rufusâ initial musing are eyes, grey - a look without pleading, without sorrow. a look of acceptance. though what good would a man like heidegger be in this new world? he had forever flourished only in a fight - only had a heart for a select few ( a heart that had given out not long ago ). what good was an attack dog when the world needed not animality but humanity? in the presence of the otherâs goodwill, itâs easy to feel useless-
that is until his coughing; a weakness shown by the blonde. a weakness heidegger hasnât seen in so long. though this isnât emotional, this is physical. his pale skin and frail frame suddenly of note to the former-general. weakened sight that scans rufus for signs of sickness. alarm when he realises with the othersâ words just how ill he must be.
'might not have longâ? says who? the aggressor in heidegger wishes to snatch the otherâs hand, pledge loyalty with the optimism of finding a cure for whatever ails him. the broken man, however? the man who sits opposite the blonde, weakened by time and barely kept together by fragments of a past, long gone? he can only respond with a sigh. lower eyes and leans back into his seat, spares a glance for the world passing by - ignores the mumble of the man driving ( a man heâd no respect for then and still no respect for now ).
âthey forget that if it werenât for usâŚâ longing eyes pine for the sky ( pine to be a part of it ) âthe barrier would have never been broken.â and then resentment comes with the twist of his lips, sympathy heâd never ( and would never ) feel for the dregs of society. their enemies. ââŚdonât you-â a sigh âdonât you think itâs better to focus on yourself. your own health. finding-â
optimism in the flicker of his glance, ignorance as the car prepares to pull to a stop.
âfinding a cure.â
In a way it pained Rufus. To be confronted with this broken version of Heidegger. Not because it disappointed him to see him like this, no, but because there was nothing he could do to ease the crushing guilt. If he could Rufus would take all his guilt upon himself, let himself be crushed by it, he was supposed to pay the price for the crimes of his family anyways. The Geostigma. It existed because of him, it existed *for* him, he was sure of that.
When the car finally came to a halt Rufus was already reaching out to open the door when he noticed a shift in the expression of Heideggerâs eyes. They had been hopeless and almost sad before, but speaking those words, Rufus could swear there was a flicker of optimism returning to them. A flicker of the intensity the other used to show when he was enthusiastic about something, usually like war and weapons. It was there for only a second or two, but to Rufus it felt almost comforting to see there was still a fragment of the old Heidegger hidden in this broken shell of a man.
And before he could reply the door next to him was opened, Tseng calmly looking at him as he held out his hand for Rufus to grab to get out of the car, but the former president knew that internally there was nothing left of the Turksâ calm composure, not as long as Heidegger was around. There was no trust or kindness between these two and Rufus already wondered how long it would take until they would try to kill each other for the first time.
Outside Rufus waited for Heidegger, who had to climb out of the car by himself, and before the older one had the chance to suggest looking for a cure again, Rufus dismissively waved his hand.
âWe are already looking for a cure, but it is not my top priority. Letâs head inside.â
And with that Rufus climbed the stairs to Healen Lodge, Tseng and Heidegger trailing him like shadows, just like in the old days.
âBoss! You are already back, did you find what you were looking.. for..â The enthusiasm Reno greeted them with turned sour once he saw Heidegger entering the room right a few short seconds after Tseng, but Rufus silenced him with a dark glare. None of the Turks trusted Heidegger, and he most likely didnât trust them in return, and for once it was Rufus who had to hold all of them together. It was a challenge, it was new, because he had promised them he wouldnât order them around anymore, but they would have to find a way to work together eventually.
âI will speak to you later, this man needs rest.â And with that he almost gently put his hand on the small of Heideggerâs back to lead him down the corridor, away from the judging eyes of the Turks.
âI am positive you understand why they are all on edge, you had your differences in the past.â
Rufus closed the door behind himself and then stood there awkwardly for a moment, gaze wandering through the little room that would be Heideggerâs home now, if he decided to stay. It was a pretty basic room, with a bed, a closet and a desk, but at least it had its own little bathroom next door.
âTell me what you need. Do you want to eat or bath first?â
Now that it was only the two of them there, Rufus looked at Heidegger with something like very guarded affection before turning his head towards the window, worried about what the otherâs arrival would mean to the project of Edge. And to himself.
