β Mama told me it was a hex. β
β We are what we eat. β
β It doesnβt feel like four years at all. β
β It was always the quiet and dark nights that kept me awake. β
β Iβd heard Mama tell many folk tales. β
β They felt lost, and that is what beckoned them to us. β
β She learned to make them feel invincible. She made them feel in control. β
β Men are stupid when they feel powerful. They become complacent. β
β She was once in love with the local gamekeeper. β
β He liked holding my hand in his. β
β He used to measure the size of his fingers and palms outstretched next to mine. β
β I forget I am a giant. β
β Papa wouldnβt have been happy, but Papa was gone. β
β Iβve felt nothing like this before. β
β I knew she didnβt love him the way she thought she did. β
β The hole in her chest is never filled. β
β When my reflection stared back, I saw the nuisance everyone thought I was. β
β He is someone who only sees what he wants and nothing else. β
β The people out there, they will never understand us. β
β We arenβt like them. Weβre woven from a different cloth. β
β They will never accept us. β
β I wasnβt like them in my heart. β
β Every intrusive thought felt like a desire unfulfilled. β
β I was born this way. β
β I wanted to know her inside out. β
β My daughter loves this song. β
β Draw no attention. β
β Itβs all much easier than it sounds. β
β It feels complicated. β
β I donβt like him. In fact, I donβt like most of the people here. β
β Though powerless apart, when brought together you can hold the power of the cosmos in your palm. β
β He didnβt care about me. He cared even less about you. β
β I want to hear you say it. Say that he is selfish and he doesnβt love you. β
β There is no one more vulnerable than a lone mother and her child. β
β The snow is beautiful and glittering, especially if it goes untouched. β
β That is what motherhood is like. Treacherous and disappointing. β
β I want to see what you do when you put the word in your mouth and speak it. β
β Has anyone told you that you have a beautiful smile? β
β Iβll come to find you in the morning. β
β Sheβs different from the others. β
β You can stay as long as you need. β
β Can I help you with them? β
β The things that happen to us change us. β
β We canβt save each other. Not really. β
β We have company. Itβs not a good time. β
β Can we take this somewhere else? β
β You left me. For her. β
β I wonβt leave again. This is where I belong. With you. β
β Love, after all these years, has finally found us. β
β Itβs okay if you canβt find the words. β
β There really arenβt words to describe what it feels like, are there? β
β He has a child and a wife, but I think he was falling in love with me. β
β You promised yourself to her a long time ago, but you were always mine. β
β This is what family is supposed to be. β
β I want you to stay here. β
β Please. Let me keep you. β
β I know you arenβt a good man. But I donβt think youβre a bad man, either. β
β Has anyone seen him since he left? β
β You donβt have to be hungry anymore. β
β I donβt think she loves me anymore. β
β Iβm only looking after you, I hope you know that. β
β You know, itβs my job to look after you. β
β Youβre not as tense as you usually are. β
β I know youβre right here with me, but Iβm trying to hold on to every detail because Iβm scared you might disappear. β
β I want to remember everything. β
β Do you understand? Iβll never leave you. β
β Youβve loved another woman before? β
β I thought that was love, but now I realise I didnβt know what love truly was until you found me here. β
β You make me feel full. β
β The absence of love had spoilt something in their souls and mine. β
β Our love was rotten, but still looking for the burning it craved. β
β I miss him, sometimes. β
β You canβt miss someone you didnβt truly know. β
β He loved the idea of me before he peeled back all the layers. β
β Men love the idea of women. They love the question about a woman; the mystery yet to be solved. β
β He didnβt love me. He just wanted a wife. β
β I was expected to be perfect and quiet. Compliant. β
β Do you think I look pretty? β
β You are the most pretty. β
β He could be earnest and sweet, but his temper was short if he didnβt get his own way. β
β The devil looks as ordinary as you and me. β
β Youβve got big awful bags under your eyes like youβve not slept. β
β Is that what you kids do for fun these days? β
β It wonβt be like this forever. β
β Itβs okay. Youβre going to be fine. β
β You did well today. β
β I could listen to your stories all day. β
β Tell me about your mother. β
β Itβs such a lie that we have to love our own blood. β
β Iβd give her my beating heart if she really wanted it. β
β My mother was a wicked thing. β
β She was hell-bent on getting me into my husbandβs marriage bed so I could give her grandchildren. β
β We can belong to each other. β
β Being a mother is a big job. β
β Humanity is made up. β
β Our empathy is waning as every second passes because itβs not supposed to come so naturally to mortal creatures. β
β I donβt think thatβs true. β
β I will protect you both. β
β She doesnβt like ugly things. β
β Thereβs nothing bad about a wish. β
β Years feel longer when you arenβt loved the way you want to be. Or the way youβre supposed to be. β
β We all need different sorts of love to make us feel whole. β
β Iβm not just a mother. Iβm a whole person. β
β Why do you need hemlock? β
β Does she love me the way I love her or does she just desire me? β
β I know I can be selfish. My feelings get the better of me. β
β Do you want to come in with me? The water will be cool. β
β This is how we keep ourselves safe. β
β Is everything alright at home? β
β I wonder what I must look like to him. β
β How can you deny me what is natural? What I crave? β
β Iβm doing whatβs best for us. β
β You donβt know whatβs best for me! β
β Maybe you donβt know me as well as you think you do. β
β You see how she says things just to spite me? β
β She didnβt want me. She only wanted [name]. β
β There is not enough room in her heart for the both of us. β
β You are the most important thing in my life. β
β You can show me the blackest part of your heart and I will not flinch. β
β I want things to stay this way forever. β
β To feel a little baby inside you is like nothing else. β
β Iβve travelled for a very long time. β
β I was born in a small town and I couldnβt wait to leave. β
β All that time, I just needed a reason to settle. β
β Iβve met so many people in my life, but none of them will remember who I am, whether I was a passing face or a lover. β
β I wish I could see the things youβve seen. β
β No? Then sheβs not yours, is she? β
β What are you thinking of? β
β Take those feelings and hide them. Push them down. Keep them in the dark. Keep them where no one can see them. β
β It hurts when I try to forget her. β
β Iβve had to do that before. Put my heartbreak somewhere I could not see it. Itβs sometimes for the best. β
β Itβs hard to do it all on your own. Sometimes I donβt want to anymore. β
β Sometimes, I think about you in ways Iβm not supposed to. β
β I wanted to make sure everything was okay. β
β He kept you late. What was that about? β
β Come to bed. Itβs time for you to rest. β
β We are family now. You belong to us. β
β You have to try to put good into the world, otherwise everyoneβs putting bad into the world. Someone has to swallow their pride and make things okay. β
β Can you do something good by doing something bad? β
β Everything has its place in the world. β
β I think we all deserve a small piece of happy. β
β Whatβs this bad thing youβre so worried about? β
β I didnβt mean to frighten you. β
β It was anger that changed her. I had broken free and now it controlled her. β
β Why did it have to be me? β
β She was simply in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong person. β
β Get away, or Iβll pull out your teeth. β
β Iβm scared she will leave me. β
β Sheβs insatiable. β
β Come inside. Youβll catch a cold. β
β I donβt want to leave you out here all alone. β
β Iβve changed for her. β
β Iβm not settling anymore. I want to hunt. β
β Your pulse sounds the same as your fatherβs. β
β Iβm not lying. Cross my heart. β
β With my own flesh, I formed you in my womb. Weβre made of the same cloth. β
β You feel this hunger the same way I do. β
β When you love someone, you promise to love all of them. β
β Sometimes, when I look at you, I see him. β
β She told me to try something new. To get my anger out. β
β Stay. Just for a second longer. β
β I didnβt feel anything like that. β
β I felt like everything had been scraped out from inside of me. β
β I know how capable you are. β
β Prove yourself useful. β
β Sometimes I imagine what life would be like without you. If youβd have still haunted me anyway. β
β Tell me you love me. β
β I felt like being alone. β
β I donβt think I want to be alone anymore. β
β Youβd do anything for me. β
β Every word I spoke was gospel and you looked at me like I was the most beautiful woman in the world. β
β Do you know the story of Saturn and his Son? β
β His son would grow bigger and stronger than he himself ever was. β
β I want to tell you something. A confession. A secret chapter of my life. β
β Thatβs the thing with babies, theyβre destructive little things before theyβre even out of you. β
β I didnβt want to see the oh-so-perfect family that took my son. β
β I was fifteen and somehow it was all my fault. β
β You donβt have to run anymore. β
β I donβt think you should marry him. β
β Youβll get bored with him quickly. β
β What are you smiling about, freak? β
β You want to be just like me. β
β I wanted to kill him. β
β Maybe Iβm already like you. β
β Iβll make you miserable for this! β
β Iβm scared I will disappear. β
β What were you thinking, doing something so reckless? β
β Youβre going to do exactly as I tell you to do. Nothing more. Nothing less. β
β Iβm going to set you free. β
β Itβs the thing sheβs best at, making people love her. Fall in love with her. β
β I want to keep her safe from a world that canβt understand us. β
β I canβt keep you safe anymore. β
β Itβs so easy to get to you. β
β When did you become like this? β
β You are always going to be lonely without me. β
β I know youβll grow bored of her. The same way youβve grown bored of me. β
β I could have been so much more than this. β
β What did you say to him? β
β I canβt go with you. β
β If I tell you something, will you take it with you? β
β Laughter and love came in abundance but it spoilt them. β
β What do you want us to tell them? β
β People will draw their own conclusions. β
β She is a person who knows exactly what she wants, and takes it. β
β Dry your tears. Thereβs no more time to waste. β
β I never wanted to be a mother. I just wanted to be a person. β
β None of this was supposed to happen. β
β I donβt want to be a mother. β
β You make me hate myself. β
β Iβm never going to tell her Iβm sorry. β
β You need to learn to behave yourself. β
β Love changed her. β
β Tell me about love. Real love. β
β When I think of the word love, I think of the first time I knew I looked beautiful. β
β Their attention felt like a promise that Iβd be loved and looked after for the rest of my life. A human sort of love. β
β That doesnβt sound like love to me. β
β I donβt think you love me. β
β Sometimes I feel connected to you. Drawn to you. Like there is a thread between you and me that can never break or be severed. β
β I dream of hurting you and I like the way it feels. And I know you feel the same way about me. β
β Lots of mothers donβt love their daughters. β
β Do you think Iβm ugly? β
β I draw you as you are. How I see you. β
β I wonder if this is what being a real human is, accepting you are pieces of other people, too. The people youβve loved and the people youβve hurt. β
β Sheβs everything Iβve been looking for. β
β I know you think Iβm a monster, but we all have a bit of dark inside. And light too. β
β You were supposed to be a promise of happiness, but youβve eaten me alive. β
β I wonder if we were born with something broken inside us. β
β I can be myself now. β
β This isnβt what I want. β
β You donβt know what you want. β
β Hasnβt our little one done such a good job? β
β I love you. I really love you. And I donβt need anything else except this. β
β This, just you and me β it feels right for the first time in my life. β
β Iβve spent thousands of days hiding. Changing myself. β
β This is what love is supposed to feel like. β
β This will be unlike anything youβve ever done. Unlike anything youβll ever do again. β
β Youβll never taste anything like this again. β
β From this slumber, they will never wake. I made sure of that. β
β Even in death, they crave touch. β
β Because I made it so, this ground is safe for strangers to tread. β
