VISUALSUNDAE

After some reflection, this will be my last post on Visual Sundae. I have had a great time sharing my art and design inspiration with everyone, but have hit a point where I am unable to give Visual Sundae the full attention that it deserves. As for the future, I am moving on and focusing my efforts on other projects.

A big thank you to everyone who followed and supported Visual Sundae, I could not have done it without all of you.

"Wallpaper* magazine invited us to collaborate in a project that would be exposed during design week in Milan. The task was to create 5 food items that were focused around one particular ingredient, also the branding and packaging.

We worked with Alfredo Villanueva, choosing "chili" as our main ingredient, so we could stand out our culture bringing the name of "Mexico" to an international exhibition not only by design but also by it's gastronomy.

In a world where everything screams, everything is flashy, BRUTO remains an outsider, confirming that what is well made can get along with simplicity. What is startling is not necessarily noisy."

"Pieces created for my 'Banner Year' solo show at Why Lou Two in Louisville, Kentucky. The collection featured 8 handcrafted banners.

I designed 8 simple quotes that served as part motivation, part fun. The canvas was prepared and handed over to sign painter extraordinaire Kirby Stafford, to paint the designs. Couldn't be happier with how they turned out."

This product was a fun collaboration with our favorite team across the pond, Herb Lester Associates. These tag's are printed on almost indestructible Tyvek®, a 1950s miracle product that looks like paper but resists tears and water."

"At the corner of Bell and Oak street in Denton Texas is Weldon's Saddle shop, where Clint Wilkson's grandfather has hand crafted leather since 1957. Bell & Oak leather goods is dedicated to his grandfather's craft of building saddles. All of the products are made using the same processes and tools that have been in his family for decades. We absolutely loved Clint's work, and were thrilled to work with him to create his packaging. The Bell and Oak logo was created by one of our favorite designers Curtis Jinkins of Neighborhood Studios."

THE PRICKLY PAIR CHAIRS Material | mix media Dimensions | variable

The Prickly Pair Chairs is a furniture project born out of the creative experience of a Mexican designer in Europe.

The chairs juxtapose Mexican and European aesthetic values, incorporating the formal design elements and quirks of both to create a cultural blend. They are frivolous and humorous yet simultaneously encourage reflection and acceptance. Shapes, materials, colours, textures and finishes collide in irreverent and playful harmony; the Prickly pair chairs are a statement against prejudice and preconceptions.

The classical French oval chair originated in the Rococo period during the reign of Louis XV and has since been adopted throughout central Europe. Although now completely familiar, its form was radical at the time — considered over-decorated nonsense which dispensed with rectilinear styles in favour of more light-hearted asymmetric forms. Rococo’s naturalistic and exuberant ornamentation mixed natural and artificial forms of all kinds, from plant motifs to representations of the grotesque.

The Nopal cactus symbolizes Mexican heritage and national pride. According to legend, the Gods told the Aztecs to build Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) in the place they saw an eagle standing on a Nopal, devouring a snake. To this day, the image resides on the National Shield.

While Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns may immediately convey ‘Mexican-ness’ to European audiences (even though they were filmed in Spain and Italy), it is the sight of cactus and Nopales that brings meaning to Mexican daily life and form the most beloved symbols of the country’s culture.

The blend of these two iconographic elements was achieved in this ‘matching’ pair of chairs. ‘Prickly Pair Chairs’ respects the original chair but concludes that its new, hybrid form synthesizes the ‘best of both worlds’; it evokes nostalgia for what was left behind and helps facilitate a sense of belonging in a new environment by fusing two powerful cultural symbols.

The Ghost of a Chair is a sculptural free-form furniture piece, handmade out of a single transparent polyester sheet. Each chair is unique due to its unconventional manufacturing process, using a combination of high-end technology and craft, in a labour of love. Volatile and unpredictable, each Ghost chair is a One-off.

The Ghost of a Chair embodies signature aesthetics with its originality and functionality in a statement furniture piece. Its transparency enables the chair to exist in any environment. The material itself is a light conductor and can easily function as an outdoor fixture; its versatility goes as far as your imagination can take you.

The Ghost of a Chair is presented as a Lady version — without armrest — and Gentleman style — arm chair. Both with a weight allowance up to 150 kg.

The Blooming Branches Collection: Lamps & Ceramics Material | stoneware ceramics, wood, electrical fittings, fabrics Dimensions | variable

A creative crossover design project where [English] nature meets [Mexican] traditional craft resulting in a beautiful and poetic collection of lamps and sculptural ceramic pieces.

Each ceramic piece has been individually casted, fired and glazed. From classy monochrome and colourful pop to sexy metallic’s. The lamp-stands are made out of solid wood, bee waxed or lacquered finish. The lampshades are presented in a great variety of shapes and lushly fabrics. A lighting collecting that respond to the delights of designart enthusiast and where form follows fiction.

Breaking the mould. Following traditional casting techniques, each mould has a lifespan of approximate 100 units. Based on this and due the labour of love that each piece require in the making, The Blooming Branches collection belongs to a limited edition of 70 pieces of each style.

"Visual identity for In The Woods Festival, a one-day music festival held at a woodland location in the UK every summer, aimed at promoting up-and-coming artists and bands from Britain. The exact lineup and venue of the event is kept secret and released to the public only on the day of the event.

Started out as a hypothetical rebranding project done as part of CSM BA Graphic Design coursework, but artwork ended up being utilised for the actual event publicity. Featured photographs and video are from the official In The Woods Festival website."

I decided to celebrate with a whole lot of 90s rnb/hip hop lovin/cheatin/cryin/trying tracks, releasing a series of typo based gifs on Instagram called ‘INSTA SLOW JAMS’. All the type and pattern work was hand drawn, then built up digitially to animate.

Never Ending Bummer | Solo Show

"‘Never Ending Bummer’ is a series of illustrative, hand generated type based artworks that visualises cycles of anticipation, observation and reflections of a spent summer.

These monochromatic works develop experimental compositions where letters and phrasing are deconstructed from a cyclical theme, allowing each phrase to become an exaggerated visualisation of anticipation and disappointments. While each work is unrelated to the next, the final collection is layered with details of rhythm, repetition, and sequence, further shaping the sense of dramatic change within seasons, relationships, time, and fortune.”
