âLEVEL DOWN in Engagement Design: to do or not to do?â
Viola Nicolucci - psychologist + gamification designer
Iâd call myself loyal in human relationship but Iâm personally not keen on loyalty programs.
I have some loyalty cards but I use a couple of them only.
The day after I watched a video on bad gamification (PBLs only) I was officially leveled down by a local videogames store (part of an international franchising). Naughty Viola, naughty. I am aware of the rules of the loyalty program but I am not particularly into this shop/retailer, you could call me dis-engaged actually. The reasons for this being: prices are higher than the market + the shop assistants (have probably been trained to) adopt what I find an aggressive sale style. No major benefits in my opinion.
I was leveled down -funny for somebody in the engagement field- because I had not purchased enough goods. To fix my loyalty issue the retail suggests âmake another purchaseâ to be opened the doors of the realm.
A: âEat broccoli!â
B: âI donât like broccoliâ.
A: âI said eat the damnâ broccoli!â
B: ..oh look itâs not working..
By the way -and this of course is obviously personal, until market is with human beings- I felt scolded for not purchasing. Actually as I am a psychologist the situation raised the âIâm not ⌠enoughâ belief in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Psy.. what?
If behavior triggers feelings then..
I started wondering why I use some loyalty cards but not others? I thought of Normanâs âEmotional Designâ. My favs would be supermarkets (needs) and Sephoras related to a âbehavioralâ processing style: pleasant but focused on performance/final goal and Iâm telling you: Sephora never punished me. When I donât progress I still have birthday wishes.
Moreover am very loyal to brands and companies such as Apple and Amazon. Iâve been wondering a while why does Amazon not have (yet at least) a loyalty program? Iâd be the Amazon Queen! In my -humble- opinion I feel so much cared for and looked after and I trust that kind of company. This style elicits my reflective level of processing I love to associated myself to a brand that treats me properly (am aware someone might have bad experience).
Amazons and Apples donât need to chain me up, I am engaged cause I feel considered as a human being.
Although I acknowledge there might be situations when a user canât progress (learning design), I wouldnât punish him/her. Generally Iâd engage him in 1st instance and then opt for empowerment.
Where the heck is the psychology in Human Behavior Design? I see heaps of brilliant frameworks -I implement in my work routine- but psychology has always a very minor role!
Please help! 2nd main issue after bad gamification!
and thanks for your feedback
Viola
