Usually I’m not particularly interested in the love stories attached to Hollywood movies - they’re mostly random, bland and boring, way too often with the woman in the role as pretty decoration or prize of the protagonist. And RomComs usually aren’t my thing, either, so I happily ship only in the stories of books, tv shows and, at times, video games.

Yet Gallya in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. kicked me like a pony.

The moment Gaby and Illya were together in one scene, I felt this could be something else. And honestly, I have rarely seen a ship that pushes so many of my buttons. Not only on the big screen, but in general. Gallya has:

a quirky, badass lady who is an extremely important character in her own right, makes difficult decisions herself and won’t take any of your shit

a determined, hardened, seemingly cold man on a mission who could kick all of your asses simultaneously but really is a soft adorkable puppy underneath

both have some issues

JUST TWO REALLY AWESOME CHARACTERS, OKAY?

tropes, but only great ones: “enemies-to-friends-to-lovers” is always interesting, and so is “fake couple”

a massive height difference

a stoic man being teased and annoyed and embarassed out of his shell

some subtle beauty-and-the-beast-shit going on with the big dangerous Russian bear and the little German chop shop girl

accents, language barriers and an exciting clash of cultures

no love triangle WHATSOEVER. If there’s one thing I hate in love stories it’s triangles, and even though it could’ve been done so easily, there is none at all

in fact, Napoleon seems to low-key ship it as well

flirting and lingering looks and many “almost”s, but no clear, simple conclusion. Would have loved more scenes of course, but it just isn’t your typical Hollywood romance

still a canonical happy ending is strongly suggested

I would’ve loved this movie anyway, but Gallya is really what will burn it into my memory.
