Oh man! I agree with you on basically everything you just said.
Now, I feel thereâs a need to go deeper into Murphy, just like you said we know basically nothing about him and his life which raises a TON of questions.
Hereâs some stuff i thought about regarding the finale, iâd be happy to know what you think.
First of all hereâs the main point: it doesnât make any sense to me, and let me explain why (this might be long).
From the little we know about Murphyâs background we can assume that: as he said he promised they would never be poor again. Heâs not against sleeping with clients which grant him some benefits, he seems like a though guy but as we saw with the plane turbulence, talking about his family, and him plain saying ÂŤÂ you donât know anything about me  at one point he can also be a softy.
Now hereâs why i think the finale doesnât make sense. At least in a ÂŤÂ Murphy is a dick and he did it on purpose to destroy your hope of being partner and securing the position for him  kind of way.
- why keep it going with Ingrid AFTER he got partner?
If his whole agenda was to secure the position, once thatâs done thereâs no point in keeping face and staying with Ingrid. What would be the benefit? Sheâs not Victoria, she doesnât have much to offer him.
- youâre telling me heâs being a cutie poe for what? Pity? Guilt?
The dude throws her a thanksgiving dinner at the office when he doesnât care about the holiday, and ultimately he does it to make her happy because sheâs missing dinner with her family.
Now thatâs already after jail so presumably he could have already told Marty, in which case why bother? If you only want the job why throw a dinner together?
And thatâs basically the question for all the scenes after.
Why break up with Victoria and move into an apartment? Why go to her house and cook for her after her  mourning period ? Why tell her that you love new york? Aka you love her.
You canât tell me that the guy who remembers the wedding 6 years ago, is being considerate, nice and all that would keep the charade up.
If heâs really a fuckboy, he would have dropped Ingrid the minute he made partner, itâs logic.
I mean i could really go into detail of their interactions but that would take ages and be boring for some people.
From what theyâve shown us it just doesnât make sense to me. I could see him telling Marty about the jail sure, but first of all, it was Lina, Murphy knows that heâs the one who told the cops to check the prints, second of all and i gotta insist on that one, whatâs in it for him to keep it going with Ingrid?
Maybe he hoped sheâd never find out? Possible
Maybe he realized after that he truly cared about her and it was too late? Probable
But why insist she would make partner and for sure get the job if he knew damn well she wouldnât? You canât tell me he thought that telling Marty about the jail wouldnât cost Ingrid the partner offer.
I just feel like thereâs a HUGE chunk of info missing to make sense of it all
TLDR: considering Murphyâs moments with Ingrid I feel like thereâs no way he would have stayed with her, and cared for her if all he wanted was partner. He would have bailed the moment he got the position. Huge piece of the puzzle missing in my opinion, to make sense of the situation apart from ÂŤÂ he told us you went to jail
P.S. if anyone has a gif of Murphy rolling up his sleeves before going through the boxes, and Ingridâs reaction, send it my way đ. I felt like womenâs reaction to men rolling up their sleeves was extremely well explained/ portrayed.
