It's so so difficult to talk about the intersection between dysfunctional/emotionally distant family dynamics and Asian cultures (Desi in my case but I know this applies to a lot of other Asian cultures and probably other non-Western cultures too). I'm afraid to bring it up in front of white people because they think it's an excuse to be racist and air their grievances about how Asian cultures are soooo scary and conformist and foreign and backwards to them. But I also hate talking about it with other Asian people who will often go "Well that's not trauma that's just our culture 🤪". It feels so dehumanizing. Like I'm supposed to have fewer emotions or emotional needs than a white person. Idk how to explain this to you but wanting to be loved and understood is not a Western phenomenon...that's like a universally human thing--

Also I think some diaspora immigrants have this over-romanticized view of their culture and if you (as a member of said culture) criticize or question a cultural norm in any way they will tell you you're too whitewashed. Like. Actually criticizing a culture is a form of participating in it....just like how I can and do criticize American culture as an American. Also don't even get me started on the whole "Our parents didn't say I love you but they showed love by cutting fruit" sentiment, that pisses me off

reading about the participation of children in rituals as a form of play in ancient greece and came across an incredibly charming story from julius pollux's onomasticon where a flood prevented the adults from reaching a sanctuary to sacrifice a ram to heracles, and the children solved the problem by....sticking a bunch of sticks in an apple to give it "legs" and "horns" and offering it as a sacrifice instead. it's such a charming thought and i can perfectly picture kids these days also pretending at sacrificing an apple "goat" at recess

okay not to ocpost again but the worst thing about having an oc is sometimes they become The Character to you. and you need to talk to someone about it like wow I can’t stop thinking about The Character… but in order to do so you have to like sit them down and explain everything about your oc first. and then it’s just you explaining your writing ideas. i need to talk about them the same way i would talk about any random character i love to someone.
