On May 26, 1897, Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror novel Dracula was published. It has been adapted countless times, but it’s the cinematic versions that have truly made an impact, beginning with the silent film Nosferatu in 1922 and followed in 1931 by Bela Lugosi’s iconic portrayal of the suave and toothy count in Dracula. Since then there have been many versions, including the 1958 Hammer classic Horror Of Dracula, starring Christopher Lee (who went on to become the most famous of the lot); Andy Warhol’s 1974 take Blood For Dracula, starring Udo Kier; Frank Langella’s romantic blood sucker in 1979’s Dracula; Gary Oldman’s creepy uncle version in 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Gerard Butler’s blow dried model in Dracula 2000. There have been more, of course, but not all of them are worthy of the name.
