When beauty and self esteem is based on approval from outside (male) sources, it is fragile, easily and often destroyed, and based on self-objectification, which is psychologically damaging to women and girls.

Self esteem and beauty need to be reframed as coming from within oneself and not based on self-objectification. The idea should be that I gain self esteem by improving who I am on the inside, by pursuing interests that mentally, emotionally, and psychologically benefit me and better the world around me.

If Tiffany had turned the corner to have another group of guys mock her appearance, the “positive” reinforcement she got from the first group of guys would be nullified.

Framing beauty and self esteem as something based in approval from outside sources is giving away your power to those around you, and they get to decide if you are worthy of feeling good about yourself.
