So, Marc Forester is a pretty talented dude. With Monsterās Ball, The Kite Runner, and Quantum of Solace under his belt, no one is going to question Foresterās directing chops. Yes! Heās talented.Ā But is he Stanley Kubrick talented?
Forester recently agreed to develop a trilogy based on The Downslope, a 1956 screenplay written by Kubrick between Fear and Desire and Paths of Glory.Ā
...based on a true story by Civil War historian Shelby Foote, Downslope is an epic Civil War drama following the activities of Confederate Army Colonel John S. Mosby and his plot to settle the score after Custer captures and hangs several of his men.
Kubrick, in true Kubrick fashion, planned this film to the last detail, even creating his own maps. Ā Forester will direct the first film of the trilogy and produce the second and third installments. Does he have what it takes? Who will direct the other two? I donāt know, but Iām excited to find out!Ā

Last year, when I first moved to Asheville, there was an announcement in a local paper that a new film, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and starring Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson, was set to shoot in town that Summer. During the shooting weeks of the film, it seemed everyone I knew spotted one of these stars... I sawĀ what appeared to be a very confused Wilson wandering around downtown. At the time this production was titledĀ Loomis Fargo. The titleĀ has since been changed to Masterminds.Ā
Masterminds is based on the true story of a 1997 heist in Charlotte, North Carolina, in which a bumbling armored car driver (Galifianakis) was convinced by his beautiful co-worker (Kristen Wiig) and her con man boyfriend (Wison) to commit the second-largest cash robbery in US history. The film also stars: Kate McKinnonĀ andĀ Jason Sudeikis

Kojak is a cop drama based on the 1970s TV series of the same name. Vin Diesel has stated he would like to see Ang Lee direct, but no official director has been named yet. Philip Gawthorne (EastEnders) will write the screenplay andĀ Universal, along with Dieselās company, One Race Films, will produce.Ā
I canāt even begin to describe how excited I am about this! Written and directed by newcomers:Ā FranƧois Simard,Ā Anouk Whissell,Ā Yoann-Karl Whissell, and executive-produced by Hobo With A Shotgun director, Jason Eisener, Turbo Kid has the potential to become one of the great cult film gems of all time.Ā
Turbo Kid takes place in a post-apocalypic wasteland, following our heroes: THE KID and APPLE as they fight for survival against the evil ZEUS, the wastelandās self-proclaimed ruler. Youāve probably heard by now that Rob Zombie will not direct the newest film in the Halloween series. The musician-turned-director is currently in production on his next film, a crowdfunded horror pic titled 31.Ā What he has his sights on next may surprise you.Ā
Earlier today Deadline announced Rob Zombie and Miranda Bailey bought the rights to the bookĀ Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Grouchoās House byĀ Steve Stoliar. Raised Eyebrows focuses on the final years of Groucho Marxās life. Zombie describes the book asĀ āsad, funny, and very dark,ā stating he believes it could beĀ āGrouchoās Sunset Boulevard.ā Though they are still very early in the pre-production stage, we do know thatĀ Oren Moverman (Iām Not There, Love & Mercy) has been hired to write the screenplay.Ā
I, for one, am excited to see what Rob Zombie will do outside the horror genre!

Eli Roth (Hostel) has recently been attached to directĀ Meg, aĀ tale of a gigantic prehistoric shark set in the modern era. Ā The film has been in development at Warner Brothers for approximately 15 years, but the recent success of Jurassic World is making a release date in near future seem much more plausible. Ā The script byĀ Dean Georgaris (Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life) is based onĀ Steve Altenās novel, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.
If youāre curious about the differences between Jurassic Worldās Mosasaurus and Megās C. megalodon, Film School Rejects explains:Ā
If you loved the giant prehistoric sea creature in Jurassic World, then youāre going to love the giant prehistoric sea creature in Meg. The former beast is a Mosasaurus, an aquatic reptile from the Cretaceous period that could be as long as 59ft. The latter is a C. megalodon, an early shark from the much more recent (by 50m years) Cenozoic Era that could also be as long as 59ft. Itās basically the animal that bridges Jurassic World and Jaws.
The Spoils Before Dying is a Los Angeles crime spoof mini-series set in 1962. Ā It is the sequel to 2013ā²s Emmy-winningĀ The Spoils of Babylon. Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) leads the cast as Rock Banyon, a former jazz pianist, current private investigator, who becomes the prime suspect in a double-murder. Other cast members include: Kristen Wiig, Will Ferrell, Haley Joel Osment, and Tim Meadows. The Spoils Before Dying will air on IFC from July 8th until July 10th.Ā
Itās 1930. Silent films are being replaced by a new gimmick called talkies.Ā Many who have forged careers in the silent cinema are hoping this new fad will soon pass. They believe images are all that is needed to tell a good story on screen. They believe dialogue will only lead to over-explanation and misunderstanding. This concern is perfectly exemplified in this 1930 experimental talkie, Tomatos Another Day.
Tomatos Another Day is a pun-laden satire about a husband who discovers his wife is having an affair. It is directed by avant-garde cinema pioneer James Sibley Watson. Ā Tomatoes Another Day and other works by Watson can be seen in the seven-DVD collectionĀ Unseen Cinema - Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941.

The more I re-watch the films of Noah Baumbach the more I admire his ability to create stories that seem as if they are the beginning of a journey, not the end. Whether a character is trying to make his or her way to another country, return home, start a family, or transition from adolescence into young adulthood, Baumbach wants us to feel for his characters, hope for them. He wants us to understand this is not where their stories end. A good day does not equate to a perfect eternity.
I first saw Greenberg in the early months of its theatre release. I was living in Columbia, South Carolina at the time. Though Greenberg would soon come to our local art house theatre, I made the drive to Charleston (approximately 1.5 hours) where it was already playing. I loved it. I told everyone about it. I was convinced it was ābetter than The Squid and The Whale.ā I watched it again once it made itās way to Columbia, showed it to my roommate as soon as it arrived on DVD, and have seen it several times since. Though my initial hype has died down and I would put it much lower on the list of my favorite Noah Baumbach films, Greenberg is still a great comedy with wonderful performances. It has beautiful cinematography, well-timed jokes, and an amazing score by James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem).
Plot:
Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller) is in his forties. He used to be hip. He used to be in a band, know all of the coolest records, films, etc. He has alienated everyone who has ever been close to him. Heās rude. Heās selfish. He is recently released from a mental hospital. Heās housesitting for his brother, Philip (Chris Messina), who is opening up a new hotel in Vietnam. Roger plans to dedicate his life to ādoing nothing,ā which he repeats several times, wearing it as a badge of honor.
While staying at Philipās house, Roger meets Philipās personal assistant, Florence (Greta Gerwig). Florence is twenty-six years old, unsure of the direction of her life, and by all accounts, really good at her job. Roger and Florence start a relationship, but the age difference and the fact that Roger is, well, insane, cause it to fall apart several times. The two are constantly brought back together by their mutual love for Philipās dog, Mauler, who develops an autoimmune disorder. Meanwhile, Roger tries to reconnect with his best friend, Ivan (Rhys Ifans), the bassist from Rogerās former band and a current IT guy. Ivan is going through a separation with his wife and Roger isnāt as sympathetic as he should be. We watch as Roger tries to become a better person, fails, tries to become a worse person, fails again, and tries to find a good medium.

Pros:
Greta Gerwig and Rhys Ifans ā I have nothing against Ben Stiller in this film. I think he plays Roger well and itās nice seeing him in a more serious role. Greenberg is, however, primarily carried by the two supporting roles of Florence and Ivan. It is their performances that allow us to understand Roger better. The way they treat him, in opposition to the way he treats them, gives us an amazing look into the heart of the story. Both Gerwig and Ifans do an amazing job.
The Awkward Portrayal of Sex- Some of the funniest and most dramatic moments in Greenberg center on the quasi-causal sex between Roger and Florence. This isnāt the Top Gun, slow fade to the curtains while āTake My Breath Awayā plays, nor is it the slapstick humor of Thereās Something About Mary. Itās the complete discomfort of starting, stopping, storming out when your partner says something that upsets you, portrayal of sex that has a unique tinge of realism, while also existing in a perfect median between hilarity and terror.
The Cinematography ā The late Harris Savides was an amazing Director-Of-Photography. In his twenty-year career he worked with such greats as David Fincher, Gus Van Zandt, Ridley Scott, Woody Allen, Sophia Coppola, and, yes, Noah Baumbach. Savides and Baumbach first worked together on Margot at the Wedding, on which the cinematography was beautiful, yet subdued. On Greenberg, the power of the images is taken to an entirely new level. There is realism to the film, but also a more traditional Hollywood Expressionism, reminiscent of some of Mike Nicholsā greatest works. This is best exemplified in the party sceneāPhilipās stepdaughter comes into town and throws a party at the house while Roger is there. Roger tries cocaine for the first time in many years, gets into fights with twenty-year-olds, and finds a dead rodent in the pool. At the culmination of this scene, Roger is bathed in blue light, the camera is unsteady, and thereās something about it that reminds me of the classic party scene in Midnight Cowboy. Itās an amazing piece of cinema; in large part, due to Director-of-Photography, Harris Savides.
Cons:
The Focus On Roger Greenberg ā As I said earlier, I have no problem with Ben Stillerās performance in this film. I do, however, believe that Roger is too unlikable to be the primarily protagonist. I have no quam with anti-heroes; in fact, some of my favorite characters of all time are absolutely horrible people. For reasons that I canāt quite place, thereās something about Roger and the way he treats Florence and Ivan, that makes me hate him more than any other Baumbach protagonistāwhich is saying a lot. I want him to be redeemed. I want him to succeed, but if this were a film about Florence and Ivan distancing themselves from Roger and him falling into the background, a la The Squid and The Whale, I would enjoy it much more. Rogerās journey does not concern me. Ā

Final Word:
Roger Greenberg is a character with a lot of issues. We care about Roger in the sense that we care about the people who surround him. We want his life to get better, because we want their lives to get better. If they wonāt distance themselves from him, than he must improve himself. Throw all of these characters into a beautifully shot world of awkward sex and well-written comedy and youāve got the makings of a wonderful independent film. I loved Greenberg when I first saw it. Itās not The Squid and The Whale. Itās not Frances Ha. It might not even be Kicking and Screaming, but this does not make it a bad film. Greenberg contains many pros that I have not written about in detailāthe exquisite comedic writing, James Murphyās music, the fluidity of the editing, but my only con remains Rogerās journey. Greenberg isnāt perfect, but itās enjoyable and sometimes thatās all we need.
āItās Not An Obvious Adaptationā Joseph Gordon-Levitt on The Sandman

Neil Gaimanās The Sandman is undeniably one of the best comic book series of all time. The series ran 75 issues from 1989 to 1996, with one of the most intricate narratives comic readers have ever experienced. Somehow, screenwriter Jack Thorne and actor/director Joseph Gordon-Levitt are supposed to turn this into a single film. Itās no surprise they are running into some complications.Ā
Joseph-Gordon Levitt first became attached to the project, about Morpheus, ruler of dreams, in 2013 and has yet to fully crack the story. One problem Gordon-Levitt and Thorne are presented with is the episodic nature of the comics and the vastness of the source material. Gordon-Levitt explained this dilemma in a recent interview with IGN:Ā
If you examine it from the broad strokes, there is sort of a beginning, middle and end, but it was written in such this episodic way. Itās not like adapting a graphic novel. Like āWatchmenā is a book.
Also, letās not forget, it took several tries to get aĀ Watchmen adaptation, starting in 1986 and ending with the 2009 Zach Snyder film.
DC has been trying very hard to compete with Marvel at the cinema the past few years and a properly made Sandman film could be just what Detective Comics needs to keep up. Donāt rush it JGL, just get it right.Ā

Power is a tricky thing. Some have it, most donāt. Those who possess it naturally abuse it. Those who donāt are left to suffer the consequences. This is a fact the world learned all too well in 1971, when Stanford University professor, Philip Zimbardo split twenty-four students into two teams, prisoners and guards, and conducted an experiment. The Stanford Prison Experiment lasted less than a week, but the results were remarkable in the most terrifying of ways. The guards naturally took to their roles, abusing the prisoners both mentally and physically. In this film, director Kyle Patrick Alvarez and screenwriter Tim Talbott take a closer look at the experiment that shocked the world.
The Stanford Prison Experiment won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at this yearās Sundance Film Festival, where it was bought by IFC Films. It stars Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, and Michael Angarano. The film will be released in theaters on July 17th of this year.Ā

Short Film: Trans Lives Matter! Justice for Islan Nettles

Islan Nettles, a transgender woman from New York, was murdered in August 2013. She was beaten into a coma and died one week later at Harlem Hospital. Shortly after, Harlem Pride organized a vigil for Nettles, but many were disappointed in the proceedings, feeling as if the transgender community did not have enough of a voice. Seyi Adebanjo captured this tearful event and anger, sadness, and disappointment that surrounded it, in the experimental short filmĀ Trans Lives Matter! Justice for Islan Nettles.
The video takes a very interesting formal approach, primarily consisting of still photographs and audio, with video entering during the eventās most emotionally charged moments. This seven-minute version of the film will be available to view online for the next week.
Re-Watching Baumbach: Margot At The Wedding (2007)
Introduction:
When Margot at the Wedding was first announced I was ecstatic. I was at the height of my love for The Squid and The Whale and had not yet seen Noah Baumbachās earlier works. I was craving something new. The trailer promised the subtle comedy of The Squid and The Whale, with a subdued color palette, reminiscent of early David Gordon Green. I have always been a huge fan of both Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nicole Kidman and was skeptical, though excited, to see Jack Black in a more serious role. If anyone can make it work, I thought, Baumbach was the man for the jobālest we forget Jeff Danielās most popular role pre-The Squid and The Whale, was Dumb and Dumber. I was still living in Myrtle Beach at the time and the nearest theatre playing the film was two hours away. I did not have the time or the money to go to (I was 18), so I waited.
When Margot at the Wedding appeared on Netflix DVD (February 2008), I was likely one of the first to rent it. I watched it the night it arrived. From the first moment of the film, Claude (Zane Paise) getting change from someone on a train, I was hooked. As the film wore on, however, I began to lose interest. It was beautifully photographed. The performances were amazing. It reminded me of Woody Allenās best works, residing somewhere between Interiors and Hannah and Her Sisters. I canāt entirely explain why I didnāt like it. I think there was a cynicism to the film that I wasnāt quite expecting. Re-watching it today, however, gave me a completely different perspective. Ā
Cinematography: Like The Squid and The Whale, the handheld camera in Margot at the Wedding is exquisite. The camera moves freely and allows us to get close with the characters, following them, taking on their points of view, living with them in a way that could not be done using more traditional filmmaking modes.
Production Design: The vast majority of Margot At The Wedding takes place at one house. We go to a bookstore, on a train, on a bus, into the woods, etc, but the focal point of Margot at the Wedding is the houseāthe house where Pauline is to be married, the house where Margot and Pauline grew up. With a combination of believable props and a subdued color palate, the production design drives us into the world of these characters and we donāt question it for one moment.
Performances: Noah Baumbach knows how to write great characters. If The Squid and the Whale took his use of subtlety to new heights, Margot At The Wedding sent it into another dimension. I say this because I donāt want to discount Baumbachās importance in the writing and directing of the performances in this film, but if weāre being completely honest, Margot at the Wedding belongs to its actors. We see Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh pour their souls out in ways we have never seen before. Zain Pais absolutely amazes us as Claude. This is their world. They created it. It belongs to them.

Cons:
Jack Black: Iām sorry. Iām sorry. I love when comedic actors transition into dramatic roles. Jim Carey, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Jeff Daniels, have all done it beautifully. I do not feel the same about Jack Blackās performance in Margot at the Wedding. If there is anything distracting about this film, it is Black awkwardly forcing the role of Malcolm to life. I donāt dislike Jack Black as a comedic actor, but I donāt believe drama is his forte.
The Balance of Comedy and Drama: Noah Baumbach has always been great at balancing comedy and drama. Just when the audience is ready to sink into a depression, he always brings us back up with a well-timed joke. Just as we feel a film is getting too goofy, he tones it back down for us. In Margot at the Wedding, the dramatic end of the spectrum takes over. The comedic relief is there, but not in as heavy supply as some of his other films. It, at times, Margot feels cynical. Some of the jokes center around violence, anger, molestation, etc, and itās hard for the audience to know exactly where it is going. This is what drove me away when I first watched it. Now Iām not as bored with the film as I once was, but I still wouldnāt rank it as my favorite of Baumbachās works.

Final Word:
When I first saw Margot at the Wedding in 2008 I was convinced the titular character was boring, one-dimensional, and an anti-hero at best. I didnāt understand much of the plot and was even turned off by the jokes. Upon this viewing, however, I realize this was a flaw with the way I was watching the film, not the film itself. We are introduced into these characterās lives. We see the rich history they have with one another and if we donāt get every inside joke, so what? Itās their lives, not ours. Margot at the Wedding is a well-designed exercise in nuance that Baumbach and his actors execute swimmingly. Since Margot, Baumbach has returned to making films with a more even balance of comedy and drama, which I prefer, but letās not discount how great Margot at the Wedding is, despite itās flaws.
