The R32 Skyline GTR was a purpose built track weapon developed by Nissan to win Group A racing and dominate at the race track.

Engineers developed multiple innovative technologies that worked together to create the car’s amazing handling characteristics. One such system was the variable All-Wheel-Drive system. An onboard computer would analyze inputs such as wheel slip and G-forces to change the car from RWD to AWD, adjusting nearly instantaneously. This was incredible, as it allowed drivers to enter a turn as a RWD car would, but pull through it like an AWD car would. This is one of the factors that still makes the car so fun today. The car let’s the driver slide the tail out a little, but then power is increasingly distributed to all wheels to keep the driver from losing control.

Other innovations like all wheel steering were added to sharpen up the car even more. Nissan powered the car with an inline 6 cylinder twin turbo engine. Even increasing the boost slightly makes the car feel utterly fast. Tuners quickly learned that with basic upgrades, the engine was capable of putting out huge horsepower numbers on stock internals.

When Nissan unleashed the R32 Skyline GTR on the race track, it ended up dominating race after race. It won 29 out of 29 Group A races. It would go on to win the Nurburgring 24-hour Group N class race, multiple Australia Touring Car Championship titles, and the wins just go on and on.

From the touge to the race track, the Skyline GTR’s performance created a legend. While its younger brother the R34 gets more pop culture attention today, it is the R32 which made the Skyline GTR family name famous.
