Like literally, how can a regular-ass person ~opt out~ of all damaging behaviors while still being able to function in society? 

You literally can’t. 

The future of our planet is not down to whether or not someone recycles their water bottle. 

It’s down to whether or not governments and corporations decide to quit sucking up all our resources and poisoning the earth with reckless abandon. 

The professor mentioned that even if every private individual in the world were to conserve resources and the environment the ol’ Jimmy Carter way- by turning down the thermostat, recycling your glass and plastics and metals, cut down on luxuries, take shorter showers, etc., it would only get us 10% of the way to where we need to be in order to avoid global catastrophic climate change.

So many things that people are leaping on bandwagons to ban ARE NEEDED BY DISABLED PEOPLE.

But no one cares! It’s just like the “Opioid Epidemic” and the knee jerk backlash to just cut them off. It’s ridiculous! It’s solving a problem by making another! But hey, it’ll make some people FEEL like they DID SOMETHING, so who cares who gets hurt? Who cares about the critical life threatening damage and death it causes? Because “Epidemic!” Because “straws are bad!” Because because because!

I just wanna point out that all the “No items, stock only, no stage effects” crew all are complete trash at the game. They’re great at FIGHTING GAMES, but complete Garbage at Smash Bros. Because instead of trying to learn the game, learn to play around the items, learn which stages do what, they just turn it all off (when you first start the game all the items and stage effects are on and you can’t turn them off in any of the modes except multiplayer melee).

And then if you do wanna play with items they try to shame you and claim that you’re “ruining the game” or “cheating” because “you can’t win without using items.” Guess what asswipe the intention is to play with the items that’s why they’re their in the first place for free with the base game.

In “overwatch,” the character McCree carries a revolver with six bullets. His primary attack shoots one bullet per click with precision control. His secondary attack fires all six bullets in quick succession with massive recoil. One of his abilities is a Stun Grenade which stops you in your tracks for about a half second. When used together with PERFECT timing, this can allow him to kill an enemy in one go without letting them dodge or block the attack.

I once got matched with a teenager who had a full-on meltdown on microphone because our enemy was using this trick— not because he was frustrated at being killed, but because he felt that it was “cheating” to get kills in any way other than “land more headshots than the enemy.” Forgetting the fact that getting kills with any ability and any hero requires solid timing, positioning, and reflexes, he was FURIOUS that someone was using their entire kit instead of just being faster and having better aim.

People like this are essentially insisting on playing with one hand tied behind their back as some sort of power trip to show everyone that they’re better without “unfair advantages” like powerups and special abilities than everyone else is with them. The problem is, they’re NOT better without them than ANYONE is with them, and they throw a little tantrum about unfairness whenever they get beat by someone who doesn’t cut themselves off at the knee. It would be like if there was a football player who refused to wear protective padding because they believe they’re just good enough to avoid getting tackled, but they DO get tackled and complains about how “casuals” are ruining the game by wearing padding that puts them at a massive advantage over the people who are relying solely on the sturdiness of their own body.

Exactly, there should be actual-ass equality. Which there is not, which is why “blackwashing” is not a thing.

From one Indigenous person to another, then, how does it feel to you to almost never see yourself on screen? (And I do mean never. The ‘other’ percentages of those graphs broken down further show native peoples rep is 0-1%. Which is why supporting independent film festivals is so important.) How does it feel to you when that number is decreased even further when non-native actors take native roles? That is why whitewashing is so bad on a statistical level, let alone the racism in deciding a white person is better to play a native person than an actual native, of which said roles are often either straight-up about or strongly connected to the character’s nativeness, as further discussed in the video previously linked. [Here it is again for context]This is no different when whitewashing other minorities. 

Now, lets for a second pretend that Nick Fury in the MCU isn’t based on the Ultimate comic verse Nick Fury, who is Black. Since people love to use him as an example of quote, “blackwashing.” Take away Sam Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury in the first and second Avengers films, and you have a main cast that is entirely white. (Since Wanda and Pietro were also run through the whitewashing machine.) All white men, and one-two white women. Looking at the first film alone since with the added whitewashing things are even worse in Age of Ultron, yeah, this sure would have been accurate to the comic books, (again, pretending this is 616 Fury and not 1610,) but why would you want to be accurate to something that could instead be improved upon? Why would you look at a lack of racial diversity and decide to prioritize keeping the status quo, rather than challenge it? 

TL;DR: “Blackwashing,” “brownwashing,” etc. does not exist because it is a false equivalency to whitewashing. It is a false equivalency to whitewashing because white people are not even in the slightest loosing representation when a white character is played by a racial minority, whereas when white people play minority roles, they are taking away from what is already very little representation for us. If we lived in a world where these statistics were not so drastically disproportionate, then there would be something to talk about. But if you are really wanting to support equality, you should focus on equitably supporting those who actually need it, not white people.

“But that’s unfair to the people who submitted on time!”

I didn’t say you had to give everybody full credit. Drop the grade for each individual assignment by 5% for every day late until it gets down to 20%. Never, ever take it below 20%.

Here’s my rationale:

1. If you are a good educator, then you created that assignment in the first place because YOU WANTED YOUR STUDENTS TO LEARN SOMETHING. You still want them to have an incentive to complete that learning experience even if it’s not “on time.”

2. You want to prepare your students for the the real world, right? Well, if you missed a deadline (for example, submitting report cards), would your boss throw away everything you’d worked on, dock your paycheck, and tell you to try again next time? No. They would be upset with you, but they would ask you to take time out of your schedule to finish the project as quickly as possible. It wouldn’t cease to exist.

3. Based on point #2, if you are teaching high school or below, not accepting late work is holding children (who by the way, generally do not have full control over their schedules or what materials they have access to) to a higher standard than adults. 

4. If you are teaching college or graduate school, you are working with adults who are taking years out of their lives and paying thousands of dollars to learn from you. Why make it harder for them than it already is?

5. You have or will teach students with extenuating life circumstances that they don’t tell you about (e.g. chronic illness, caring for children or sick relatives, abusive relationships) because they are embarrassed to share this information or have already been taught to shut up and stop making excuses.

6. You have or will teach students with learning disabilities that they don’t even know about. I was diagnosed with ADHD in high school after years of being treated like I was just a bad kid. I suffered from depression and anxiety for over ten years before I went on medication. I did not even learn the words “executive dysfunction” until I was in grad school.
