Nevertheless, She Persisted

Koops and I are writing, and Fawn is adapting our scripts to comic book form, which is how it’ll be released. I’m still on a break until TWOW, but I’ve been stuck to this for so long that I have to finish for my own sanity, so I’ll be popping in every now and then. Once we have it complete (around January? We’re almost done), we’ll probably be releasing it chapter by chapter.

This is NOT a S8 fix-it fic. Fixing S8 is nearly impossible, because you have to go back like 4 seasons to clean up the garbage. The fic also isn’t what we want to happen or what we think will happen. Our characterizations lean more towards show-based and try to follow setup in past seasons, while sticking mostly true to the rumored original S8 outline. Therefore, we’re exploring what S8 could have looked like if they had gone that route, whether the alternate endgame gossip is true or not.

Having Jaime abandon Brienne for Cersei was not, in fact, Subverting Expectations. It was exactly what we all expected.

Let me explain: for literally the last thousand years, the Western Literary Canon (and also just... the world in general) has told us that women who don't conform to gender expectations are monstrous and end up alone and/or dead. She doesn't get to Be Herself and Be Loved at the same time. (Trust me, there's a whole chapter about it in my dissertation).

So while yeah, technically we have all been watching Jaime and Brienne gaze longingly into each other's eyes for five seasons and were expecting some kind of Romantic Payoff, here's the thing: the very fact that Jaime and Brienne were ever a love story in the first place IS the subversion.
