riiight but why are we making fun of ppl who struggle to get enough calories? this feels very "#2 ACTUALLY cant help it but #1 isnt even trying" which is some bullshit.
anyway if you struggle with anything remotely akin to #1, heres what's been helping me (i've been malnourished since birth & am now in my early 20s-- it has taken like 5 years of concerted effort at this point, but i finally, for the first time, grew out of all of my pants, and am beginning to feel well enough to do shit like. learn to drive.)
from what i know, refeeding syndrome can be related to electrolyte deficiencies as well as the whole long term malnourishment thing. so keeping yourself super full of electrolytes *while* you consistently (and slowly!) increase your food intake should help. for me, i get electrolyte packets and this 'electrolyte water' from walmart and i drink it constantly. i also eat a lot of salt.
and then you want your body to be getting *nutrients* even when you cant eat as much as you would need to to naturally obtain those nutrients. so like i drink an ensure every day and take a few supplements (i take magnesium, fish oil, and Thera-M which is a rly powerful multivitamin that used to be prescription only, but is now available over the counter.)
and you shouldnt introduce those all at once-- like, start with lots of electrolytes, then add an ensure a day, then add supplements. sloooowly increase your food intake throughout.
idgaf if youre eating healthy shit or at the right times or whatever. eat when you can / feel good about it, without forcing it. do NOT try to force yourself to 'eat like a normal person' or overeat to 'catch up' quickly. thats not what you need.
you might still feel pretty ass, but try to persevere through those stages-- again, SLOWLY-- getting through it makes it SOOO much easier to maintain, and to feel a lot better as a baseline.
again, it will take a long time to reach a point of eating 'enough' and that's okay. i still probably don't eat as much in a day as most people. don't put too much pressure on that. the more nutrients your body is capable of absorbing, the more appetite you will have, you won't feel like you're forcing yourself to eat as often. just takes a long ass time. be patient and stay on it. <3
