It's very endearing to me how many people are willing to keep an eye on a video feed so they can push a button and let a fish in the Netherlands get to the other side of a dam.
It is genuinely baffling to me, in a very kind and positive way, especially coupled with the local news continually going several shades of 'wtf, this thing is a roaring success again and we don't quite get why'. They've already quadrupled their capacity for simultaneous clicks and it's still nowhere near enough and there's just... Bewilderment.
I think people want to help the environment in small but tangible ways, which is hard right now because of.. well... because of The Horrors. And being able to say 'wow! I helped this creature cross a dam' makes you feel good.
I also think that most people can relate to a small, helpless creature trying to get from one place to another and there's a FUCKIN WALL in the way.
But to come back to point 1- Citizen Science fills a hole in the soul that wanted to go out on adventures and discover things when we were younger, but the study of it was hard or we didn't have the money or our schools were garbage. But you don't have to have a degree to do things like... press a button or download and use an app, or count or transcribe notes.

people, especially younger people/minors, on platforms like twitter, bluesky, tiktok and instagram are too comfortable with censorship without even knowing that it’s literally a fascist textbook. “so I am personally uncomfortable with these fictional things, therefore it deserves to be censored/erased from existence and anybody who disagrees with me should be harassed and crucified for it”
don’t like something? cool. curate your own internet experience by muting/blocking what you don’t want to see. don’t make it other people’s problem to censor themselves and cater to your personal comfort. no one in real life is getting harmed because a fanfiction someone somewhere writes is taboo.
This includes the mistaken, toxic habit that I've seen cropping up among young people of the need to ask before engaging in fandom.

Yes. You were born with that right, stop asking.
Can I make OCs in your universe and play with them, cuz its a cool universe?

It is a misperception that asking equals politeness. It doesn't. You have the right - don't debase yourself by groveling. That creator is not a god. When you debase yourself and your fandom by asking for permission to engage in your natural rights, you implicitly encourage censorship. Because what will you do if that creator says no? When that other fan dislikes your favorite tropes or ships? Are you going to allow, and even encourage, censorship by obeying those who should not be obeyed?
What you are really asking is: can I show my fan creation to the creator? That depends on the creator. Phrase your question properly: ask to show the creator before showing them. Never ask to engage in fanwork.
Put under the cut for artistic nudity (topless fem presenting subject), but genuinely I adore how this turned out. I really have been enjoying Aura as a muse to help me learn to love my own body type more.
