In my world, before the dawn of limb civilization, handkind had adapted to their environment by becoming arboreal. More inclined for flight over fight, they found safety in colonies of tree hollows in old growth forests. Making use of the abundance of resources, hands are opportunistic omnivores, enjoying a diet of larvae, nuts, seeds, fruit, and whatever a small ambush predator like them could pounce on. (Hence the vertical pupils). They had especially taken a liking to fish, as it is a rare, yet nutritionally dense meal! That, combined with their sweet tooth stemming from their love of fruit, had carried through into the formation of society and even the modern day. This is why they preserve many foods through candying, and how hands had become the first confectioners!
