I think it's genuinely insane that people only consume content of media where they relate to the character. Like, narcissist much? Relating to a character is a nice little bonus you get, when you enter a new world within a novel, where you get to spend time with different people and characters, to be a part of their journey and story. The whole point of it, is to get lost in something different from yourself and the world you're living in. When you relate to a character, it's again just another way of getting to live within that world, without actually living within it. Reading used to be entertainment and an escape. Now it feels like when I hear about people who talk about books like this, they do it out of obligation to look "smart, cool and nerdy". Don't touch a book if that's the attitude, I'm not even kidding. If you're not the type to read books, don't, it will change nothing and you still get to remain true to yourself.

Reading is actually better for you when you don't relate to the character. It is a large, varied world out there and if you insist that everything must look like you and act like you you close yourself off from the wonder of everything. Your mind should be expanded and challenged. That is a good thing. It is how you grow.
