Real life tip/rant: last year, I paid off all of my credit card debt and my credit score JUMPEDā¦ I was so happy because I felt like I was making some real strides in my life.
But a few weeks ago, my credit score dropped 30 fucking points.
I was so lost and confused because I donāt owe anybody money and I donāt have a credit card.
Little did I know, that was the problem. If you are not actively building your credit MONTHLY, that shit will dropped.
The second you build any credit history, you need to keep building on it, unless your credit score is 0 (you donāt have to worry about that shit dropping obviously but you should start building credit history, maybe starting with a secured card).
Donāt let this shit happen to you.
One more thing, if youāre poor (like I was for the longest).
Find a bank or credit card company that allows you to have a credit line of no more than 50-200 dollars (idk the minimum amount you can have but the least you have, the better)
Because I maxed out my credit card (I was desperate at the time to pay for tuition) and it took me forever to pay it off because I couldnāt afford to pay it.
Youāre only supposed to use 10% of your credit line but you need to pay that off every month because these companies will charge you interest when you pay the minimum balance.
The way I intend on building my credit score is having one secured card (Iāll get one more eventually when I qualify for it) and using it to pay my monthly Netflix, Hulu and Spotify bill.
Which is only $40 a month for all of them and I intend on paying off that amount every single month.
Youāre actually supposed to use 30% of your card but make sure you pay it off every month.
10% is way too low but now I know š
ANOTHER POINTER: your credit isnāt reported in real time. Companies send your bill to the credit reporting agencies on/around your billing date, so if you have a balance of $50 and pay it before your billing date, theyāll tell the agencies you donāt owe anything; therefore, thereās nothing to pay off. Building credit is showing youāre trustworthy owing money, so wait to be billed for your balance before paying it off.

Just tryna spread the wealth of knowledge. ALSO, for those just starting to build/rebuild credit and canāt get approved for a regular credit card, you should get a secured credit card. Itās pretty much a credit card that requires a down payment and I use the Capital One Secured Credit Card (not sponsored) and I had to pay $50 (if I remember right) for a down payment and every dollar extra you add, you up your limit, so I paid an extra $25 and my limit was $225 starting. If you show youāre trustworthy with your payments and are active in using it, theyāll up your limit $300.
Update: my credit score jumped by 40 points since Iāve made this post.
Donāt get it twisted. My shit is still trash but Iāll have the perfect score in no time.

All good stuff to know. Also remember that the only purpose of your credit score/report is to see if you are able to get more credit. Donāt let it stress you, but donāt let it slip you up.
We NEED to encourage our people to have good credit.

Itās 2018, being financially illiterate is not the wave.
If you wanna get a house, a car, an apartment or get a loan, your credit needs to look on point.
I know itās confusing, but also remember that the billing date is different from the due date.
Itās a common myth that itās good to leave a small amount of balance (debt) past the due date. In reality, itās best to pay off your ENTIRE bill before the due date.
Do not pay off your entire bill before the billing date.
Pay your bill AFTER your billing date, but BEFORE your due date. Itās best to pay in full, but at least make the minimum payment.
They literally recommend that you use at least 30% of your credit line and not everybody is big pimpin and balling enough to pay off their entire bill like you. What I said is pretty spot on and I was able to turn my 510 credit score into 715 within a year lmao
I didnāt mean to sound like a jerk (or pimpin and ballin lol). Iāve definitely read that itās best to use less than 30% of a credit line if possible, but maybe itās different for different credit cards.
I just wanted to chime in bc I used to be confused about the difference between the billing date and the due date. Some people purposely donāt make the full payment even when they can, because theyāre misinformed.

And yes, what you said most definitely works. Because for me, as long as I make a payment by the 7th of each month, I will see an increase in my scores.
The 10-30% thing they tell you is just so you will spend more. The real number they want to see is 5-7%. If you go over 30% and take forever to pay it off you look untrustworthy. If you use a little and pay off quickly in increments you will have a better chance at raising your score faster and you look more reliable because you arenāt letting the bill just sit and pile up. Plus the sooner you pay it off the less interest you will have to pay. Also you can ask to get your interest rate reduced after having your card for about a year!! I didnāt really have any credit when I got my card and all I had was student loan debt. My interest rate was less than half the original amount after I asked them to readjust it.
5-7% is literally too low and Iāve been there, done that. My scores have never increased that way. Then again, I donāt have any debt or student loans.
Using 30% of my credit line and paying it off at the end of the month has been my go to and Iāve seen an increase every single month. The only time my score drops, is if I use more than 30%.
Credit card companies donāt make you do anything, if you decide to spend more than youāre supposed to (unless thereās an emergency) - you probably donāt have any discipline to handle a credit card. Itās really that simple.
Also just a side note I just recently learned if youāre planning on changing credit card companies leave your other card line open as that will also effect your credit if you try to close out the account. Not sure if this was stated earlier š š I know reading is fundamental but my ass is low key tired of reading because graduate school is kicking my ass so please donāt get on me too much if this was already mentioned

March 6, 2019 is our next #Blackout!
(Re)defining Blackness - itās what #BlackoutDay is about.
For years, weāve always asked how you define Blackness on your terms. This year, weāre asking a new question: What have you done or can you do to recognize and celebrate Black experiences outside of your own?
Until the Internet brought us closer, it was difficult to be exposed to the experiences of Black people who are unlike you. At the same time, the world was teaching us damaging attitudes that contribute to the harm and alienation of Black folks of varying identities and characteristics. Ā We became indoctrinated with mindsets such as:
The āpreferenceā and value of lighter skin over darker skin.
The idea that there are only acceptable activities or fields for Black people to participate in.
Who you love or your gender identity should determine your worth and access to community support.
Oneās physical and mental wellness determines if you are worthy of respect and inclusion.
As we grow older and seek to build better Black communities we have to fight against the habit of reaffirming those beliefs.
This year, we want to us all becoming a shining example of a new mindset. Those such as:
We acknowledge and celebrate the way Blackness presents itself in our communities, regardless of geography, background, ethnicity, gender/sexual identity, and physical appearance.
That we will celebrate and support Black people who are breaking glass ceilings and occupying spaces we have traditionally been shut out of or discouraged from occupying.
And that you being authentically yourself is redefining Ā Blackness and combating the stereotypes imposed on you by the world.
This year and every year, letās make March 6th a day where we do not just celebrate ourselves, but most importantly, each other. Cause as the great comedian, actor and director Jordan Peele once said: āweāre all we got!ā
