Green Lantern / Guy Gardner

Guy Gardner grew up in Baltimore and had a very difficult childhood in which he endured both physical and emotional abuse from his father.  After a brief brush with delinquency in his teens, Guy decided to make something of himself.  He covered up his emotional pain with a brash and grandiose facade and pursued a career in social services.  

Guy earned a degree in social work and childhood welfare and took a position offering counseling to inmates at a penitentiary.  Although he was excellent at his job, the work proved quite stressful.  Guy had not properly contended with his own past traumas and counseling many who had endured similar experiences ultimately became overwhelming.  Nonetheless, Guy persevered and went on to work as a special education instructor at an elementary school.  

Elsewhere, the Green Lantern known as Abin Sur had perished on earth and his power ring searched the populace for of a suitable replacement.  The ring found two such candidates, Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner.  Jordan was in closer proximity and thus he became the new Green Lantern of the sector.  

When Jordan was later injured in battle, however, Gardner was sought out by the ring to act in as a temporary replacement.  The ring saw in Guy a tremendous sense of will and the capacity to remain resilient in the face of adversity.  These were qualities pivotal to being a Green Lantern and Guy took quickly to it.    

Guy ended up doing so well filling in for Jordan that the Guardians on Oa sent him a ring of his own.  As a Green Lantern, Guy fought alongside Hal Jordan and later became a member of The Justice League.  

His grandiosity and boorish demeanor made Guy something of a disliked member of The League; yet what he lacked in social niceties he more than made up for in terms of the raw power and unflinching loyalty he brought to the team.  Guy began a romance with his fellow Leaguer, the heroine known as Ice.  Their relationship was passionate but fraught.  Guy was entirely distraught when Ice appeared to perish in battle.  

Guy ended up losing his power ring and operated for a short time as a non-powered vigilante.  Following further misadventure, Guy obtained the Yellow Power Ring created for Sinestro.  He used this ring for a time before later obtaining new powers from the so-called ‘Warrior Bloodline.’  He acted as Warrior for a time and even opened a bar also called ‘Warrior.’  Although he did not prove an especially savvy businessman and Warrior ultimately closed.  

Teaming up with the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, Guy helps to repel an invasion by the Spider Guild that threatened to destroy Oa’s sun.  As thanks for his valorous service, Guy was welcomed back into the Corps and was more made a Green Lantern. 

In the midst of the Blackest Night event, Guy’s suppressed rage over his past experiences of childhood abuse and the tragic loss of Ice caused him to become a Red Lantern, equipped with a power ring fueled by anger.  Fortunately, Guy was ultimately able to free himself of the red ring’s influence.  Although he would return too use the Red Ring on occasion, even acting as the leader of the Red Lantern Corps.  He has since returned to being a Green Lantern.

Hawk & Dove

The pair of heroes known as Hawk and Dove are earthly avatars of the mystical Lords of Chaos and Order.  These two metaphysical beings are named T’Charr the Lord of Order and Terataya the Lord of Chaos.  Although these lords have been eternal enemies the pair came to fall very much in love and, over time have opted to work in conjunction with one another.

The Lords offered to provide their powers to twin brothers Hank and Don Hall when their politician father was at risk of being assassinated.  The angry and decisive Hank took on the powers of T’Charr whereas his more gentle and tentative bother, Don, took on the powers of Terataya.  Both were imbued with enhanced strength, speed and dexterity as well as a type of extrasensory perception that enabled them to sense danger.  Hank was additionally bestowed a enhanced durability and a accelerated healing while Don was provided limited flight and the ability to emit a blinding flash of light.  

Hank had often been conservative and combative in his beliefs whereas Don was much more liberal and peace loving.  As such they chose the superhero codenames of Hawk and Dove respectively.  The pair became vigilante crimefighters and later joined an iteration of the Teen Titans.  

Don perished during the Crisis on Multiple Earths event where upon the powers of Terataya were transferred to a young woman named Dawn Granger.  Hank became increasingly unstable and violent without his brother’ calming influence, yet he was able to feel more stable once he met Dawn and the team of Hawk and Dove was reunited.  

Being a conduit for a Lord of Chaos gradually had a corrupting influence on Hank, ultimately causing him to become the super villain known as Extant.  Extant murdered Dawn, but it was later revealed that her death was a ruse created by the evil wizard Mordru as part of a plan to undermine the Lords of Order and Chaos.  The now resurrected Dawn later teamed up with her sister Holly as the two became the new Hawk and Dove.  Hank was resurrected in the rebooted DC Continuity and he and Dawn returned to action as the heroes Hawk and Dove.
