An interesting aspect of The Nice Guys (2016) that I noticed was the film swaps the most typical portrayals of daddy issues vs. mommy issues. I’m sure we’ve all seen variations of memes where the gist is that daddy issues are much more straightforward, with the child quick to say “I hate my dad.” and mean it. While, on the other hand, mommy issues are much more complicated, featuring the child elaborating on outside influences on their mom’s behavior (while trying to acknowledge she wasn’t Great) and having a slight edge of defense. Are these portrayals always the case in real-world family dynamics? No, but they are the most common stereotypes you see.
But, in The Nice Guys, March and Holly’s dynamic is reminiscent of every serious film prominently featuring a mother-daughter duo in the last fifteen years. Between all of the comedy is a story of a teen girl and her neglectful parent trying to understand each other in the wake of a tragedy. Holly vaguely threatens Healy about breaking her dad’s arm, and then says she hates him within a few days. Nobody else should hurt him, but he deserves for words to hurt. She loves him, but doesn’t believe he’s a good person. March is distant and incapable until Holly is in real danger. He doesn’t know where she is most of the time, and he’s usually drunk, but she feels safe with him. That’s his babygirl, and he’s often failing her. There’s so much love wrapped up in a relationship that is generally an unhealthy one between a parentified child and a wreck of an adult. And, I bet if you asked Holly, she would have a lot to say about her father being a “complicated figure in her life”, but she would avoid the word “bad”.
They are contrasted by Amelia and Judith Kuttner, who are much more reminiscent of portrayals of a child and a bad father. We don’t even see them interact outside of their thoughts about the other, and most of that is Amelia’s belief that her mother would have her meet a violent end, and physical violence is often a theme when it comes to bad dads in media. There’s no love there, and Amelia will tell you that. Holly would (and did) tell her dad she hates him, but not someone else, because that’s more real, and her “hate” for him isn’t.
someone stop me I can’t stop thinking about them
she's silly
most representative shot of the film
the patient needs more gosling parent roles to live

the child is too lonely, let's give him a famous twin brother and an older spy brother and detective grandparents and a fucking convict who he can have a QPR with and he's still a teacher and yes, somehow Rocky, Adrian and Eva are there too..

Holland March saying he can’t die and proceeded by him falling off of multiple buildings and dodging active gun fire— makes me want to write an x-men cross over we’re he’s a mutant he doesn’t know it but his superpower is just the universe not letting him die. Sure he can get hurt and maimed but fate will contrive a way to make sure he won’t die like domino but worse. (Maybe he has a healing factor but it’s slow as fuck or the universe won’t let him get hurt if it’ll kill him. Fall off a building perfectly fine break your arm welp that wasn’t gonna kill you anyways.)
And then Holly suddenly gains her superpowers and it’s a lot louder and a lot more noticeable and the government goes after them or something? Idk about the plot.
But I also had this vision that Healy was related to the Howling Commando’s in some way— maybe thru Bucky Barnes, like maybe Bucky’s sister is his mom (before she died) and he grew up around the Howlies and Howard Stark in a oh yeah those are my cousins type of way and it turns out his cousin are generationally beloved war heroes and a multi-millionaire who makes like half the worlds weapons.
But anyway idk what to do with this but i think giving March the worlds most unless (but also kinda useful) superpower in the world is hilarious.

Holland March operates by ragdoll physics and cartoon logic and that might just be what keeps him alive.
