Lin Manuel Miranda; Dwayne âThe Rockâ Johnson; Terry Crews; Fred Rogers
Taika Waititi: Powerfully creative, Knows himself, Good humored, Takes his work and his relationships with other people seriously, Intentional as a creator
John Mulaney: Publicly supportive of his wife and other women in his life, Crafts humor without taking cheap shots at people, Supportive friend, Willing to laugh at himself yet confident
Andy Samberg: Uses platform and humor to publicly call out toxic masculinity and white privilege, Self-aware, Willing to cede the floor to others, Good friend
Will Smith: Very intentional about what type of actions he takes as a husband and father (if you havenât watched him on The Red Table, you should), Good humored and professional, Dedicated to his craft putting in the hours and energy, Generous with his emotions and vulnerability, Responsive to others emotions and vulnerability
I read somewhere that one aspect of Toxic Masculinity is believing that being part of a âWeâ will erase the âIâ; that selfhood is threatened by relationships with other people. It reads then that Healthy Masculinity (indeed, healthy people in general) create a âWeâ that enhances the âIâ; that we can become more powerfully ourselves through relationships with other people.Â
All these men listed (and many more unlisted) live this type of energy, the one that builds connections without fear of losing the self - and in fact builds the self more with the building of connections.Â
This version of this post is important
If you would report an undocumented immigrant to ICE you would have reported me to the Nazis and I donât fucking trust you
A note:
I live in a state where you âhave toâ report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:
Assume everyone who doesnât speak English is visiting.
Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know theyâre not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. Thatâs terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborersâ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I canât afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes itâs not even about âaffordingâ them. They say theyâve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isnât your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you donât recallâyou meet a lot of people.
And then, if youâre asked: no, you havenât seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.
Very good very important addition
Essentially, this is the civil society version of a work-to-rule strike.
Donât do more than is expressly asked of you, and do what you are asked with such an intense attention to protocol that not asking you at all becomes more effective than even bothering.
In this case:
âHave you seen an illegal immigrant?â
âCould you describe an illegal immigrant, officer?â
*officer describes a person who is in the country without appropriate paperwork, or who has crossed the border illegally*
âNo, sir, I havenât seen any illegal immigrant.â
And this is correct. You have NOT seen an illegal immigrant, because you have no way of knowing if Jose Fulano is here legally or not. And since you canât see his paperwork (or lack thereof), and did not personally see him cross the border illegally, you are only answering precisely the question asked.
Iâm not American, and I have like, three followers, but this is important.

And if I tried to call, would you cry? Please donât cry, youâre wasting your time Sixteen lines will make me feel fine
Iâm the one who said you left ya jacket in my car
This is a group of friends who know youre dating a bad dude so are willing to drop everything and lie if it means protecting you, not remotely âoh haha its because u cheatinâ
And clearly theyâre not far off the mark if heâs going through her phone and doing these kinds of âtestsâ to uncover and instigate shit

LOTRâs concept artists designed the films as a âjourney back in timeâ
So (according to the concept art book) as the Fellowship travels deeper into Middle Earth, the places they pass through become inspired by progressively older periods of history. The farther along you are in the story, the more ancient the design influences
We begin in The Shire: which feels so familiar because, with its tea-kettles and cozy fireplaces, itâs inspired by the relatively recent era of rural England in the 1800s
But when we leave Hobbiton, we also leave that familiar 1800s-England aesthetic behind and start going farther back in time.Â
Bree is based on late 1600s English architecture
Rohan is even farther back, based on old anglo-saxon era architecture (400s-700s? ce)
Gondor is way back, and no longer the familiar English or Anglo-Saxon: its design comes from classical Greek and Roman architecture
And far far FAR back is Mordor. Itâs a land of tents and huts: prehistoric, primitive, primeval. Cavemen times
And the heart of Mordor is a barren lifeless hellscape of volcanic rockâŚlike a relic from the ages when the world was still being formed, and life didnât yet exist
And then they finally reach Mount Doom, which one artist described asÂ
âwhere the ring was made, which represents, in a sense, the moment of creation itselfâ
Iâve watched the movies a few times and love them so much so I canât believe I actually missed this!
every word out of guillermo del toroâs mouth is the most hardcore thing iâve ever heard and he says it all so casually like he doesnât even realize how much of a gothic visionary he isÂ
âSince childhood, Iâve been faithful to monsters. I have been saved and absolved by them, because monsters, I believe, are patron saints of our blissful imperfection, and they allow and embody the possibility of failingâ

Iâm a lesbian and somehow I manage to walk down the street and not ogle women I find attractive, or cat call or degrade them, or touch them without permission, or interrupt their daily lives, itâs almost as if Iâm treating them like human beings despite my attraction to them. What an insane concept.
omg same
We were arguing about dress code in a meeting at work. And while my department knows Iâm queer the other departments did not. As people (men) were saying that women showing skin and wearing tight clothes was distracting. I spoke up finally and said.
âIâm attracted to women.â
Everyone turned and looked at me and I was like âuhhhâ so I finished.
âIâm attracted to women and I can still do my job. Regardless of what someone in my class is wearing. I can still teach. So why canât you?â
The men all stayed silent.
I feel God and Sappho in this Chiliâs tonight.

I know this is supposed to be funny, but does it horrify anyone else that social media is being used by employers to monitor how happy we are to be slaves to capitalism and if we arenât 1000% enthusiastic about having to work, youâre immediately terminated? He says âGood luck with your no money, no job lifeâ but the implication is pretty clearââGood luck starving to death because you didnât live to serve me/my companyâÂ
So if you express a feeling about your job/working/capitalism on your own social media space that doesnât please your employers, youâre punished.
Holy fuck
This is some dystopian shit right here
This is actually illegal in the US, by the way. Thereâs a thing called the National Labor Relations Act that protects your right to complain about your job (the reasoning being if you canât complain you canât find other employees with similar complaints to start a union with).
If this happens to you, you should file a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. Source: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2013/01/complaining_about_your_job_on_facebook_the_national_labor_relations_board.html
