I'm getting a bit defensive of Agnes/Cinderella in The Ugly Stepsister. I had thought the point here was that she wasn't a Disney Princess but she also didn't deserve what her stepfamily did! To my mind, Agnes did exactly one thing wrong: she was rude to Elvira at the beginning, when she came to try and be friendly while Agnes was sobbing over her father just having died right in front of her. But come on, that's not unforgivable. Elvira is still sympathetic, and the movie accomplished that without making Agnes evil!
If people hate Agnes, then they missed the point of the movie. Both Elvira and Agnes were in a bad situation (remember that Elvira not only wanted to stay with Julian because she loved his idealized version of him, but she also told Rebekka that she would marry Julian to escape the financial ruin they were trapped in), and the whole Julian affair only made things worse.
While Agnes was rude to Elvira when she tried to comfort her after Otto's death, she also showed kindness towards Elvira, for example, when Elvira's false eyelashes were sewn on, it was Agnes who helped her eat (Agnes could have ignored her to get revenge for what they put her through, but she didn't). Furthermore, Agnes doesn't love Julian, but she only marries him as a desperate way out of her predicament.
It is society that causes Elvira, Agnes, and the other women to fight amongst themselves, and regardless of whether women conform to beauty standards or not, they continue to suffer:
β’ If you are ugly like Elvira, you end up hating yourself and those who are more beautiful than you and the others despise and mock you, so you subject yourself to painful treatments to become beautiful as society dictates just to gain some respect.
β’ If you are beautiful like Agnes, others try to take advantage of you and your beauty for their own benefit, men start stalking you, and women hate you and try to make your life miserable out of envy for your beauty.
Even Agnes ending up with Julian isn't a happy ending for her, not only because she doesn't love him, as previously mentioned, but also because Julian is a very unpleasant person. In the post-credits scene, Otto still hasn't been buried (implying that Agnes couldn't return to give him a proper burial possibly because Julian would not allow it, nor did he care enough to offer to accompany Agnes to bury Otto, or at least allow her to return to her home and provide her the funds needed to give Otto a dignified burial), and when Agnes is no longer beautiful, Julian will probably ignore her, verbally abuse her, or be unfaithful with another woman and Julian might even try to frame Agnes for a crime she didn't commit so she would be executed for allowing him to become single again and find a new and beautiful wife just as Henry VIII did with his wives in real life.
In the end, neither Agnes nor Elvira wins, although Elvira at least has Alma. While Elvira and Alma face an uncertain future, at least they have each other, but Agnes truly has no one; she's trapped in a gilded cage.
In the end, all the women (Elvira, Agnes, Alma, and even Rebekka and the other women in the film) end up suffering in one way or another in an indifferent society that only values ββbeauty and social and economic status. It's just as Anthy Himemiya once said in Revolutionary Girl Utena:
Anthy Himemiya: Girls areβ¦in the end, girls are all like Rose Brides.

For context,
Torment Nexus : "an idea that is so bad and dangerous in theory and practice that its indistinguishable from capitalist satire".
Luddite event : After the creation of textile machines (which produced fabric at a lower quality but faster rate while being dangerous to operate), textile mills fired a huge amount of their workforce leading to the remaining workers becoming overworked. A Luddite event thus in this context is "an innovation that is exaggerated to excuse mistreatment of the workforce".
it is actually my goal to get every repressed motherfucker to be as crazy and unethical and unburdened by social bullshit as possible. WHO CARES, ITS ALL FAKE! DO WHOEVER, WHATEVER YOU WANT
