What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

#vague awareness of the 1997 general election result #much more aware of Princess Diana dying the same year bc the news interrupted my morning cartoons #and soon after that the Kosovo War #(I lived through the end of the USSR but I wasn't watching the news then so I had no idea about it until later)

did a bit of driving through the state of georgia today and wound up driving through a small town that i later discovered was called newborn, which is an odd name but doesn’t technically have anything wrong with it, except for the fact that i nearly gave myself whiplash doing a double-take at a building sign advertising NEWBORN TAXIDERMY

wrote out a reply to a stupid post and saved it to drafts like a mature adult but tl;dr some of the trans discourse on this website really seems to forget that most trans people want to transition and also go outside in the year 2026 where there are certain societal contexts such as "being clocked" and "violent transphobia"

it doesn't matter which country we're talking about here, if someone from any country in the world says "oh where i am from there is simply no racism", you not only shouldn't believe them, but you should actually never take them seriously about anything ever again.
