I think the Yume Nikki fandom has one of the biggest tonal disconnects between the source material and the fanon I’ve ever encountered. Like, the game itself is this weird, alienating art piece full of grotesque imagery whose user experience is so fundamentally and deliberately hostile that large portions of it are virtually unplayable, and it’s probably an extended metaphor for self-harm anyway, but the fandom appears to revolve around an adorable slice-of-life anime that just happens to star a bunch of creepy nightmare children who live in Hell.
