I just finished Descendants 5 and one thing i am SURE of is that Luis Madrigalâs father is Maui from Moana.
Everyone said his enhanced strength made no sense since thatâs not how magic in the Madrigal family works, but very few considered the fact that the magic was GONE at the end of the movie. Which implies that rather than Luisa having strength, his father does.
Luis in âDid You Hear About Themâ says he has a tattoo of one of his adventuresâ which then proceeds to move just like Mauiâs do.
In the same song, he sings about his exploits alongside Hazel Hook. What does that remind you of?
Furthermore, he tells Red when he saves her in the mad house âIâm partial to gracias, but I accept thank youâ.
HE WAS LITERALLY TRYING TO GET HER TO THANK HIM SO HE COULD SAY YOUâRE WELCOME.
Also, this is more of a reach, but on his suit jacket at the end of the movie during the tea party, thereâs what looks like a sun stitched into it. But looking at his original costume, itâs more likely to be a smaller version of the Madrigal candle.
The magic of Madrigals DOES return, and Luisa regains her super strength, so this point is moot
Maui is a shape-shifter, not a superman. His physical strength isn't magical like Luisa's or Luis's.
For the record, I absolutely believe and agree with this theory (and the nod to "you're welcome is appreciated"_, but it does not explain Luis's gift situation (though his being the son of a shapeshifter and wearing yellow now does make a bit of sense, as he could be closer with his cousin Camilo, who would've loved to meet another shapeshifter).
Great point! I havenât watched Moana since the sequel came out and Encanto since 2023, and youâre right about Maui being a shapeshifter, but he can only shift with the hook. Without the hook, he still has super strength, which makes it plausible that Luis inherited that from Maui rather than Luisa.
however, it doesnât change that if that is the case, it doesnât make sense that Luis has his motherâs power. He should have a completely different power!
Or, and this would be interesting, maybe Hazel called Luis âa mini Luisaâ BECAUSE he has the exact same power. Maybe itâll be a point in 6 that he has the same power as his mother and no one knows why.
He also mentioned having 17 cousins, and I wonder if he has a kind of âMirabel syndromeâ, but instead of having NO ability, he has the exact same one as his mother.
The thing is that Luis doesn't say his gift is anything but his super strength, so unless he was born giftless like Mirabel, but then got powers from his father, then maybe, but that's a crazy story to be told.
While gifts are usually unique to each family member, it should be noted that all gifts reflect not just the individual but also their role in the family. Luisa has the big sister syndrome, also known as the eldest daughter syndrome (despite being the middle child), which manifested in her having a super strength not just in the physical sense of the word but also in a metaphorical one. Luisa explicitly represents the family trauma of having to be stronger for everyone else.
Luis could've very well inherited that feeling, which is why his gift is the same, because he inherited his mother's reputation and struggles and made them his own, which is why he's literally just a Luisa Junior. Normally, this shouldn't happen, especially with how Madrigals solved their family issues, but with how Encanto's mountains opened up to the point it became part of the Auradon's united kingdoms, along with Madrigal family growing tremenduously, which most likely means their reputation did as well, it could be believed that Madrigals are still very much exploited by everyone around them (even if Encanto village supposedly is willing to help them out more).
I mean that's my explanation. You may have cured generational trauma, but that magic grind never ends. There's a good chance that those 14 cousins he has (as 3 of them are already Dolores, Camillo, and Antonio) now have a completely new set of struggles when it comes to the gift.
