I am relatively young but in final stage renal failure. I have a higher chance of survival IF I can recieve proper medical care AND LIVING ASSISTANCE in a different state. Get me OUT of Mississippi.
The long post w the good explanation is being shared but not inspiring much help. So, I simplified it.
My illness is straight up fatal. Not gonna beat around thatBush, anymore. I seem desperate for help because I AM desperate for help.
My nephrologist has seen enough improvement in my kidney function, lately, to believe someone my age (early 30s) might have a longer life WITH PROPER AND FREQUENT MEDICAL ATTENTION. Sadly, that just isn’t an option where I live.
Please, if you can help me with moving expenses (even just a couple of bucks) I would be grateful. I’m sinking fast in Mississippi and now my doctors are giving me too much hope to ignore. I wanna get out of this situation and I’m working my fatigued, brain-foggy ass off to make it out of here.
If I can undo the damage my heart failure caused to the rest of my body, I want to. I don’t want to spend another month KNOWING what I should be eating, what medicines I should be taking, what tests and treatments I should be getting… and receiving almost none of it because Mississippi lawmakers think people like me have somehow earned slow, painful deaths.
Go to paypal.me/robincf and type in the amount. Since it’s PayPal, it's easy and secure. Don’t have a PayPal account? No worries.

t/n: i’m still new to translating so there may well be some mistakes, but please enjoy!
A.B.C-Z
Each member’s ON and OFF
A nationwide tour, a drama, variety shows, radio, etc., generally speaking, A.B.C-Z is busy right now. This month, we asked each member about his work and private life
Kawai Fumito
[ON] I’m currently practicing for the stage play “Coin Locker Babies”. Even though I’ve played this role before, several members of the cast are different, a relatively large number of things have changed since my first performance, there are new songs, and this time I’m playing both Hashi and Kiku… so it’s been a pretty rough time. It’s made practice itself more fun, though. Because of the double casting and it being my first time playing Hashi, I’ve been thinking things like “so Kiku has this kind of side to him as well, huh” and looking at Kiku from the Hashi character’s point of view. The next time I play Kiku, I’ll be portraying a brand new Kiku, so I’m really happy. And again, this way of doing a double casting is really amazing. It’s not just “today Hashimoto will be Hashi and Kawai will be Kiku”, we’ve been practicing so that within one scene Hashimoto and I switch back and forth from Hashi to Kiku. Even when we do things this way, we don’t get tangled up in the lines, it’s the songs that are the problem! In songs where Hashi has the high part and Kiku has the low part, because we change characters when the characters sing at the same time, if we’re not paying attention, we’ll end up doing things like both of us singing the high part. That’s been surprisingly difficult, but Akiyama Taiga, who will be in the play this time, has been saying things like “We won’t be seeing you constantly changing characters like this just in practice, right? It’s so fun, I’d pay money just for the practice!” (LOL).
[OFF] Matsuoka (Masahiro) took me out for food. Besides us, Murakami (Shingo), Yokoyama (You), (Ikuta) Toma, Kazama (Shunsuke), and Kami-chan (Kamiyama Tomohiro) were also there. It was a time when it was okay to ask about things like Matsuoka’s hard-earned approach to work and other useful anecdotes. I can understand why Matsuoka is idolized. But, it was funny that in that same outing we saw Toma’s impression of Matsuoka. The other day Toma’s impression of Matsuoka aired on TV like “I do this kind of thing!” and it seems like there were a lot of people who were surprised, but we’ve been seeing it since forever ago, the extent of Toma’s impression of Matsuoka. So, it was pretty nostalgic (LOL).
Totsuka Shota
[ON] It’s been a month where I’ve gone forward with both drama filming and concert rehearsals at the same time. I was only able to rehearse the whole concert on two days, so on the opening day of the tour I was so close to performing without any preparation…! I was nervous, but because I was able to run simulations of the concert in my head, I wasn’t anxious at all. But, there were moments where I felt like I wasn’t able control my body the way I thought I could. This is the unavoidable reality of getting older. Even though I act like I’m an alien, it turns out I’m actually a human (LOL). But, I want to keep standing on the stage in such a way that, even as the years go by, people say “That guy, isn’t he really an alien?”. Even now, Mick Jagger still dances on stage at concerts, right? It’s presumptuous to think of me and him as the same, but I thought “I can’t let him beat me!”. I’ll properly face him with my body. At that time, while taking the necessary amount of care, I have to have a physicality that allows me to stand on stage for as long as a whole day.
[OFF] I went and played at a river. There were people fishing at the banks, some couples who seemed to be getting along, and also some families. After seeing some energetic young kids go jumping into the river, it made me want to jump in, too. But that day I was wearing long pants and leather shoes, so. I was beating myself up like “Why didn’t I wear shorts and flip flops on a day like today!”. Instead, I threw myself down on the banks, listened to the babbling of the water and the laughter of the kids and before I knew it, I was dozing off… It was a really good way to detox my mood. I’ve decided that next time I go I’m wearing flip flops (LOL). Oh, that’s right, the other day I bought some perfume. It’s said to be the scent that French actor Serge Gainsbourg used to seduce women. At our next concert, I’ll be more conscious of “dandyism”. I’ve decided it’s something I’ll only try wearing in front of the fans. But, I don’t normally make a habit of putting on perfume, so it seems like I’ll probably always forget to put it on (LOL). Actually, I really like soft scents like fabric softener.
Tsukada Ryoichi
[ON] “A.B.C-Z 2018 Love Battle Tour” has begun! I’m always nervous on the opening day of the tour. This time we’ve been using a different approach between the start of the tour and now, and because the stage is “a series of shocks!” in the style of Domoto Koichi’s play “SHOCK”, I’ve probably been worrying unnecessarily. Because of that, on the opening day performance in Kobe there was a happening in which I skipped over some lyrics (sweating). In “Steal Your Lips”, there’s two places in the song where it turns to silence and someone sexily whispers “your kiss”. The first time it’s me and then Goseki’s in charge of the other one. I was so focused on my dancing that I forgot my part, and when I realized “Oh, it’s my turn!”, it was time for that line! In a panic and without an ounce of sexiness, I ended up saying “Your Kiss!”… The members saw and all started giggling at the floor and I didn’t look cool at all. I have so much regret. As I confess all this, I can’t really remember if the line is “your kiss” or “your lips”, so I need to drill the lyrics into my head one more time so next time I can deliver the sexiest whisper ever!
[OFF] I’ve been doing things like cleaning my house, watching DVDs, and going to visit my parents… I’ve been able to take it easy recently. To get to my parent’s house, I borrowed a rental car. I went there to store some CDs, DVDs and a bunch of fan letters in my old room. To tell you the truth, my mother also looks forward to reading all of my fan letters. This time as well, after reading who knows how many, she warned me “it’s no good to make your fans worry!”. A lot of my fan letters ask “are you really doing okay?”… (LOL). Also, my little sister contacted me with “Bro, can you get me some of this year’s A.B.C-Z penlights?”. This year’s penlight is designed to look like a magic stick, and my nieces seemed really happy when they heard about it. I told her “If there aren’t enough for the fans, I’ll be in big trouble”, so for the time being they’re being patient.
Hashimoto Ryosuke
[ON] I’m in the middle of A.B.C-Z’s nationwide tour and rehearsals for the play “Coin Locker Babies”. I rehearse, travel to the concert, then go back to Tokyo and rehearse again… I’ve been told it seems tough, but it’s like this every year (LOL), for me, concerts are like house parties with all of my favorite people! Even if something awful happens at rehearsals, as long as I remember “tomorrow there’s a concert where I get to meet all of the fans”, I’m able to cheer myself up. There’s no other wonder drug like this, is there? It’s like a constant shower of energy! Oh, that’s right. The penlight I designed, the magical LOVE stick, reached #1 in the online search ranking. I really have a knack for this, huh? (LOL) The theme for this year’s tour is LOVE so we designed all of the goods with nothing but heart motifs. We came up with the idea of a mug together, but all of the other goods were my idea. The design I like the most is the t-shirt. I want even people who support groups other than A.B.C-Z to see them and be like “A.B.C-Z’s goods are so cute, I’m jealous”. I’m also doing my best in play rehearsals. But I don’t fully understand Kiku as a character yet. I wonder if the Hashi in me is jealous (LOL). After all, it was me who said “I want to play both Hashi and Kiku”. I hope I figure out what my Kiku is like soon…!
[OFF] I’ve burned incense in my room before, but I ran out of the incense that I always use. When I went to go pick out a new one, I suddenly remembered the scent of an accessory shop that I like. I searched for the name of the shop and “fragrance”, and I got results that were like “maybe this is it?”. When I bought that, it was legit the same smell as the shop. I was so moved, like “This is it!” (LOL). Right now, I’m burning it in my bedroom, living room, old clothes room, and all through my house. The reason I like incense so much is due to my older sister’s influence. I’ve also had seniors that burn incense in their dressing rooms while they’re acting on stage. For example, (Imai) Tsubasa stylishly uses it to set the mood, and it made me think “as expected of him..!”.
Goseki Koichi
[ON] Up until right before the opening day of A.B.C-Z’s tour, I was in Nagoya helping out in the rehearsals for the play “Takizawa Kabuki”. So, I headed to the concert location in Kobe directly from Nagoya and met up with the other members on the bullet train. I was working as a choreographer on the development side of things up until the last minute. I noticed that I’ve become able to turn into the side of me that you see on stage without being conscious of the switch at all. With that in mind, the first time I was able to help out with the choreography for Ryosuke’s solo con, when I went came out for the encore it was like “Huh? How do I wave my hand again? (sweating)”, like I completely forgot how I normally act on stage in an instant and was going on stage as someone who works behind the scenes. This time that didn’t happen and I was able to naturally shift into my stage persona. That’s just one way I’ve grown, but it also seems like it’s become normal to me to have two positions: one where I work on the production side of things and another where I stand as a member of A.B.C-Z
[OFF] When I first started living in the place where I live now, the belly of the woman I lived next to was pretty big. We never really interacted or anything, but by chance I happened to hear her child crying, and I realized “Oh, she had her baby”. When I hear the child crying at night, I end up thinking “Ah, must be hard for the mom and dad. Do your best, guys”. And then the other day when I was leisurely watching DVDs at home for the first time in a little while, I could faintly hear the sound of a child singing. I thought “hm?”, and while I don’t normally want to have the time I spend watching movies and DVDs interrupted, I briefly paused the DVD and started straining my ears. And, as I expected, the noise was coming from the family next door. Even though we’ve never met before, I was so moved that, with all the emotion of a blood-related uncle, I thought “they’ve gotten so big that they can even sing songs now!”. While I’m in this condition, won’t I probably end up meeting the parents by chance, introducing myself, and then buying the child a toy or something? (LOL)
What English sometimes does when it encounters words in other languages that it already has a word for is to use that word to refer to a specific type of that thing. It’s like distinguishing between what English speakers consider the prototype of the word in English from what we consider non-prototypical.
(Sidenote: prototype theory means that people think of the most prototypical instances of a thing before they think of weirder types. For example: list four kinds of birds to yourself right now. You probably started with local songbirds, which for me is robins, blue birds, cardinals, starlings. If I had you list three more, you might say pigeons or eagles or falcons. It would probably take you a while to get to penguins and emus and ducks, even though those are all birds too. A duck or a penguin, however, is not a prototypical bird.)
“Chai” means tea in Hindi-Urdu, but “chai tea” in English means “tea prepared like masala chai” because it’s useful to have a word to distinguish “the kind of tea we make here” from “the kind of tea they make somewhere else”.
“Naan” may mean bread, but “naan bread” means specifically “bread prepared like this” because it’s useful to have a word to distinguish between “bread made how we make it” and “bread how other people make it”.
We also sometimes say “liege lord” when talking about feudal homage, even though “liege” is just “lord” in French, or “flower blossom” to describe the part of the flower that opens, even though when “flower” was borrowed from French it meant the same thing as blossom.
We also do this with place names: “brea” means tar in Spanish, but when we came across a place where Spanish-speakers were like “there’s tar here”, we took that and said “Okay, here’s the La Brea tar pits”.
Or “Sahara”. Sahara already meant “giant desert,” but we call it the Sahara desert to distinguish it from other giant deserts, like the Gobi desert (Gobi also means desert btw).
English doesn’t seem to be the only language that does this for places: this page has Spanish, Icelandic, Indonesian, and other languages doing it too.
Languages tend to use a lot of repetition to make sure that things are clear. English says “John walks”, and the -s on walks means “one person is doing this” even though we know “John” is one person. Spanish puts tense markers on every instance of a verb in a sentence, even when it’s abundantly clear that they all have the same tense (”ayer [yo] caminé por el parque y jugué tenis” even though “ayer” means yesterday and “yo” means I and the -é means “I in the past”). English apparently also likes to use semantic repetition, so that people know that “chai” is a type of tea and “naan” is a type of bread and “Sahara” is a desert. (I could also totally see someone labeling something, for instance, pan dulce sweetbread, even though “pan dulce” means “sweet bread”.)
Also, specifically with the chai/tea thing, many languages either use the Malay root and end up with a word that sounds like “tea” (like té in Spanish), or they use the Mandarin root and end up with a word that sounds like “chai” (like cha in Portuguese).
Okay and I’m totally going to jump in here about tea because it’s cool. Ever wonder why some languages call tea “chai” or “cha” and others call it “tea” or “the”?
It literally all depends on which parts of China (or, more specifically, what Chinese) those cultures got their tea from, and who in turn they sold their tea to.
The Portuguese imported tea from the Southern provinces through Macau, so they called tea “cha” because in Cantonese it’s “cha”. The Dutch got tea from Fujian, where Min Chinese was more heavily spoken so it’s “thee” coming from “te”. And because the Dutch sold tea to so much of Europe, that proliferated the “te” pronunciation to France (”the”), English (”tea”) etc, even though the vast majority of Chinese people speak dialects that pronounce it “cha” (by which I mean Mandarin and Cantonese which accounts for a lot of the people who speak Chinese even though they aren’t the only dialects).
And “chai”/”chay” comes from the Persian pronunciation who got it from the Northern Chinese who then brought it all over Central Asia and became chai.

Sometimes people ask me for advice on finding a non-academic/alt-academic career in linguistics. Normally, that’s when I send them to the linguistics jobs series, but sometimes they want more personal advice from me as a person who makes a living writing about linguistics for a general audience.
My theory is, it comes down to linguistics + X. Linguistics is the background that you already have at some level if you’re asking me for advice, and X is whatever else you like doing or have experience in or can develop skills with.
I updated this post recently so it’s worth resharing.
Reminder: the linguistics jobs series has a lot more details about career options for linguistics majors, linguistics PhDs, and profs looking to support them.
