Not afflicted with Main Character Syndrome but a different, worse condition called Prequel Main Character Syndrome in which I disappear from the story for several months, leave behind only occasional name-drops from other characters as traces of my existence & foreshadowed future relevance to the plot, then return at the highest critical turning point in the narrative, announce to everyone I’m going to kill the new main character, and do it.

Qifrey really got dumped right in the middle of Olruggio's trauma aftermath and its so messy how Oru just immediately starts bleeding projection and codependency all over this boy he just met. And that they met through Qifrey trying to KILL HIMSELF and so Oru sees Qifrey survival as tied to his own integrity and sense of self worth as a person and witch. Of course he loves him so much but also of course he sacrifices himself for Qifrey and is sure to stay cheerful about it because he needs Qifrey to be tormented for his own survival but he also needs Qifrey to be happy, because he saved his life, and he wants it to be a good life. He needs to be a witch that can help people or the survivor's guilt will eat him alive, and the praise he got from his village for being gifted will be a lie and his self image will re-shatter

& Qifrey silverwood is so poignant for cptsd... feeling safe literally feels dangerous, it feels like being hurt again. Olruggio is like aw you're just not used to people being nice to you, everyone feels that way! And knowing what we know about Qifreys condition the audience is supposed to go no that's not it...but it is ALSO that. Because he has a curse but he also just has normal nonmagical ptsd from being mutilated and mindwiped and buried alive & left to slowly drown, and then being rejected and treated cruelly by everyone around him. Safety and comfort are terrible feelings for a traumatized mind and of course Olruggio needs the complete opposite thing as him. It's so interesting how they become almost opposites in adulthood - Qifrey the whimsical one and Olruggio the stressed Tch one, but only on the surface, because Qifrey still maintains firm emotional distance and Oru has unbearable kindness at the heart of everything he does. Theyre both vines that grew around fear and then came together around love and trust
