I keep seeing posts from both ""sides"" (they aren't opposing opinions but the piss on the poor website naturally has a lot of trouble with anything that isn't a black and white us vs them situation) of the write what you want/there's a glaring lack of diversity in fanfic debate and like. What the write what you want crowd don't seem to be able to grasp is that that's literally fine. We all agree that fandom is a fun hobby and no one wants to force people not to write (/draw/make edits of/whatever) whatever they want. The point of pointing out hey, there's a disproportionally high focus on the white/male/cis/etc characters in this media that has plenty of diverse characters to choose from, or that the fanon m/m ship gets more interaction than the canon f/f ship, or whatever else, isn't to force people to fill in the gaps in fandom. It's to make you examine your biases as to why you only ever focus on the white man (etc) in every fandom you're involved in. If your response to "wow it sure is strange that the cishet white male character has more fics than every other character combined" is "fuck you I can write whatever I want", maybe just take a moment to think about why pointing out a fact makes you feel so defensive rather than immediately rushing to make a scathingly worded post.

my favorite thing about navigating fanfiction is finding a really good one and being all “oh boy this was good, I hope they have more!” and literally every other story they’ve ever written was for like Miami Vice
