anyone else watching love beyond dreams or is it just me and 3 other gay people on tumblr
One of the most striking parts of ticket to heavens first episode is Barths surprise at being remembered by the Father. Not only has it been 20 years, but one of the most grounding and sad parts of schooling —and life after it— is the realization that for many of the adults, mentors and teachers that had such an impact on you, whether positive or negative, won't remember you the way you do them. Theres just so many kids. Its reflective of Barths character that he can't imagine being remembered, moreso when we see what a wild card at the school he was right from the beginning.
This is more meta but it also lends the Father an unreal quality from the outset, past the obvious father figure presentation and lending him a distinct holiness. He remembers all his boys, he can recall not just names but personality, and the proof to back it up is in this simple interaction. It makes Tanrak immediately more accessible, not only does he want to see his parents but his model of faith is someone displaying genuine care, a figure whos guided him for years and prioritizes these kids at the centre of his teaching. It also lends an immediate sense of dread, he remembers Barth so easily, but he could never forget Tanrak. I think its really smart to have him presented this way, it's easier to stand firm in rebellion when everything is against you, it is much shakier once youve received not only care, but a purpose and vision behind denying yourself.
Moonlight 2016
Directed and filmed by Barry Jenkins based on an unpublished semi-autobiography by Tarell Alvin McCraney.
tbh a lot of my issues w girl rules at the end is what ive felt about a lot of gmmtv shows in the past year, too many cooks in the kitchen and an absurd amount of oversight contributed to the watering down of what couldve been a good show.
seven screenwriters on a project is one thing, but most of gmmtvs 2024/2025 lineup have felt sterile beyond measure, and a lot of it is because theyre trying really hard to appeal to GL/BL audiences First. The main market for GMMTV is teenagers and young adults, and their shows function as idol dramas. I don't think that works well with telling adult stories, which is what they tried to do here. so much of the drama ended up simplistic, as if only drummed up to create shock factor and conversation, and even with all that runtime both min and preaw felt very undercooked in a supposed ensemble, while krisbaipor were prolonged fanservice, stuff that really screams exec input. just unfortunate all around, considering how excited all the production teams and actresses seemed to be for it.

June 1st is TOMORROW. It means that GAY PEOPLE will exist, but only for ONE MONTH. Do not forget to buy your tickets to see them NOW, or else you will have to wait AN ENTIRE YEAR to be able to meet them AGAIN.
Dude, GMMTV's gonna get their artists arrested overseas if they keep this stuff up. Allegedly.
Okay, so, piecing pieces together:
It seems that GMMTV has been sending their artists to work in China on tourist visas. And are thus not paying taxes on what their artists make while in China. This is what we in the business of words would call "stupid" and "illegal as fuck."
China was presumably looking away from this until earlier this month when a similarly illegally Chinese production in Thailand was raided.
Police found Chinese crew members, including men and women, and a Thai interpreter, filming at the location. The officers said the group failed to produce any legal filming permits and had no government officials supervising the production as required by law. The arresting team also found that the Chinese nationals had entered Thailand as tourists and did not possess work permits. - Bangkok Post
Then, this past weekend, Gun Atthaphan's fansign in Hangzhou was apparently interrupted and canceled by the police showing up.
So it seems, as my friend put it, there was a kind of, "I scratch your back, you scratch mine," pact between them that Thailand broke, so now China's retaliating by…looking.
The first thing I thought of was the sasaeng incident with Pond earlier this month where a girl showed up after getting kicked out threatening to call the police on them, so the staff got Pond to give her a high five and a 1:1 photo.
Now, this is only speculation, but like…the assumption at the time is that she was threatening to have the police called because they sold a ticket to a minor and this was queer propaganda or whatever.
But GMMTV sends their BL artists over there for solo events, so it's not a BL event if Pond was alone.
So with all of this in mind, isn't it more likely that the staff were all terrified of getting arrested for working illegally in China on tourist visas, so they got Pond to give the girl what she wanted so it didn't spark a formal investigation?
And if they're doing it in China, what other countries are they trying this in?
Because they send a lot of them to the U.S., and that was already worrying me before there were rumors of GMMTV doing illegal shit in China.
So, hey, hi, hey, GMMTV. If this is true, please pay your taxes and apply for proper work visas and don't risk your staff and artists getting imprisoned in concentration camps in the United States, thank you.
We're shooting a school promotional video. Clip it nicely.
SHADES (2026) | EP 2 // AMY & SOPHIE
also personally dont love the choice to show explicit violence against a gay couple through joms eyes to "explain" his behavior and fear for kaew. it was much more compelling to me when he was simply extremely aware of the social implications in a way kaew wasnt, so many people live with that fear where the threat is constantly looming even if they never see that violence themselves. it almost felt like they realized the audience wouldn't be receptive towards him (which they absolutely werent) and a blatant show was necessary to bring them on his side (which worked). i appreciate that it quelled a lot of the unkindness thrown at him but it does feel like an example of shows pre-emptively sanitizing queer characters who dont behave the way people Want, even when theyre behaving in ways consistent with the time period and their characterization :(
theyre trying to do moonlight hate on my twitter timeline CHOPPPPPPPPP. you cannot condense queer identity into a dichotomy of being DL and out.. moonlight is a deeply layered exploration of a young gay black mans coming of age in a society adamant to mold him into a patriarchal model of masculinity and violence, and its a wonderful portrait that accomplishes exactly what it wants to.
sometimes i see discourse that tries to pin internalized homophobia as something that can be overcome through bravery alone, when in reality so many people are held back by the structures surrounding them. it is not always possible to be brave, it is not easy to "get over" experiences, and its callous and unkind to so many people still struggling to act as if depictions of queerness like moonlight are regressive.

Enemies with benefits (2026)
sitr is really fascinating to me because i remember being beyond frustrated at just how much time was devoted to the conflict between jina and her mom back when it aired, but i find myself really thankful for it now. kdramas still cant really place feminism and violence against women, physical and mental, into scripts without it being direct confrontation, one with a clear perpetrator and obvious heroes that seek to unveil a "truth". its why the outpour of litigious "women-centric" kdramas rings so hollow to me, you cannot climb your way out of a system that systematically disadvantages and dehumanizes you.
jina was never going to abandon her mom, or the expectations her family had for her. the fact her mom just kept pushing, over and over even when it was clear jina was miserable is so representative of how patriarchy molds women through the people closest to them. her mom was literally an agent that refused to let her divert from the path, and abused and demeaned her to the point even the general public was wondering why jina wouldnt just let it go. i think sitr would deserve more criticism for how it handled their relationship if anything close had come out recently, but depictions of interpersonal misogyny, especially with women as perpetrators of harm towards each other, have been on a steady decline. i can really see echoes of these themes in shows like you and everything else, even when life gives you tangerines, but a big reason why romances just dont seem to work is that the big blazing undercurrent of misogyny is rarely so much as glanced at anymore. sitr serves sort of as a declaration that all the healing and green flags in a relationship cant save you from the weight and burdens of societal expectation under patriarchy, youre still required to fight! its not a perfect show by any means, but i enjoy that the frustration is part of the point.
Perfect Crown is a sort of symbol for the way kdramas so desparately want a retvrn or whatever to the peak of the Hallyu Wave. Also seen it in the numerous "romcoms" riddling my screen, and they all fail imo because they want to live in this eternal 2010s vibe without reckoning with any current realities.
The Golden Age of Hallyu worked because the themes being broadcast were especially nascient, even Goong with its issues was an exploration of traditionalist values and youthful vigor and curiosity. Goong premiered one year after Delightful Girl, Choonhyang where the main premise was two high schoolers getting married after getting caught Literally Sleeping in the same bed. Lots of shows and movies regarded as silly in premise now were tackling very interesting material and causing conversation.
For another example in My Sassy Girl, Jun Jihyuns Girl is an exemplar of brashness and recklessness that was directly transgressive to the status quo and expectations of femininity at the time. Compared to a modern landscape where many women in a leading role must be Strong, without really interrogating what that means or even making slight gestures at the increasingly patriarchal and misogynist chokeholds stifling South Korea. You can't keep trying to reignite sparks without understanding why people found certain material compelling in the first place!
Does feel kind of useless to talk about the wealth worship in QLs without mentioning the Colorism Elephant in the room
theyre trying to heesu in class 2 soul mate rn and its like... since when was BL default and at what point did the divorcing of BL from queer rep become what people are asking for? is it time for everyone to reckon with the genre constraints and how its cultivated an audience that devalues the (very necessary) sad and uncomfortable parts of queerness that continue to define people's lives?
