tbh this wasn't one of my most anticipated series, but i enjoyed these first four episodes immensely!!!!!!! the show really feels like late summer nights and that nostalgic longing for the freedom, warmth, and carefree days of your teenage years. while im usually not fond of the washed-out color filters they use for series set in the '90s or early 2000s, i don't actually mind them here, as they help create a very...'lived-in' atmosphere, if that makes sense. the quality of the show is obviously high, but it's not as shiny and polished as a lot of other shows, and i think that's one of its charms!!!!!!!

this was so incredibly sweet of you!!!!!!! i really miss being around too, tbh, but work has been completely draining me these days, which is also contributing to my mood being so low. when i feel like this, negativity tends to affect me more than i'd like it to, and i just don't want to bring that kind of energy here. i'd like this to be a safe space, not only for myself, but for you guys as well, so i want to make sure i can show up in a way that feels positive and genuine. i do wanna try to get back into the groove of things tho, starting with watching some shows, so hopefully i'll get to be around a bit more!!!!!!!

i honestly have no idea why things got so out of hand with girl rules, because while admittedly it wasn't the best show, i've personally seen much worse (and not just in QLs), but also lbr. this situation with p'jojo has been going on for a while

i've been looking up some of the discourse on twitter in the past couple of days, and there are people saying it was just one person calling him a slur, one troll account with no followers sending him hate messages, but that's just not true. im not sure how the situation was before, because i was still pretty new to the fandom when shows like never let me go and the warp effect came out, but since only friends people have gotten way too comfortable saying shit about p'jojo and even TO p'jojo directly. idk if this started to happen because p'jojo is one of the very few directors who actively spent time talking with fans after each episodes, sharing parts of the creative process, or bts stories, or insights on the characters, but just because we have a platform that allows us to actually reach out to these artists and creators, it doesn't mean that we can cross the line

the thing is..im the biggest fan of being critical of the media we consume. not only because questioning the source, purpose, and underlying messages of the content we encounter can help us avoid manipulation, identify bias, and make more informed decisions in our daily life, but also because, to me, it's genuinely fun. analysing a show or a movie or a book, making a list of what i liked and disliked, reading other people's opinions (even the ones i may not agree with)....i really find that to be the best part of fandom. criticism is also vital because it acts as a catalyst for growth, revealing personal blind spots and highlighting areas where our skills or ideas can improve, and believe me when i say i do have my fair share of criticism when it comes to p'jojo's works

however, there's a very big difference between constructive criticism and mindless hate, and unfortunately p'jojo has been a target of the latter for a few years now, which honestly baffles me. i understand feeling disappointed about a show you have been really looking forward to, i understand the frustration of seeing wasted potential, but none of this justifies throwing hate at someone, especially since the hate started even BEFORE girl rules aired

i also don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist or something like that, because im not in GMMTV's walls and idk what's actually happening there, but at some point you see how watered down shows like girl rules, ofdo, melody of secrets, and dare you to death end up being compared to their mock trailers and i think it's fair to wonder if maybe - just MAYBE - certain creative choices aren't really ascribable to the directors, but to the company itself. and don't get me wrong, im not trying to absolve directors from responsibility, they certainly have their part in it, but at the same time, if p'tha and any other executive producer say 'no dark themes, no mixing of the fixed pairings', there really isn't much a director can do. and if that's the case, guess who's responsible for giving a very specific feedback to GMMTV during only friends? THAT'S RIGHT. US. THE FANS (well, obviously not all of us, but still)

idk, i've been feeling pretty disgruntled at GMMTV in the past few weeks, so i really do understand having your expectations not being met and wishing for more, but this situation with p'jojo just makes me sad. there's also some kind of irony in it because i actually think p'jojo is the director who listens to fans more and has adjusted his works to follow their demands before. damned if you do, damned if you don't, am i right?

golf, jenny, chari, acare, jaoying, chelsea, and pream as the back up dancers: golf is in love with godji but is too afraid to confess, jenny was famous when she was younger but her career faded, pream was disowned by her family for wanting to pursue her dream as a dancer, chari has an abusive ex, chelsea is hiding multiple jobs from the others to help cover her family's debt, acare is the glue of the group but she is secretly attending university because she doesn't really believe they can make it, jaoying keeps everyone at arm's length after her previous dance team put the blame on her for something they did to get ahead in a competition;

sangt as one of the waitresses in the bar who dreams to be a dancer but is too insecure to go on stage.

it's definitely funny that they're trying to pass a 22-year-old as a 47-year-old man like i appreciate the effort from the makeup team to age gemini up by giving him more age spots and texture on his face, but still... 😭

and while im also not the biggest fan of the filters they're using, i don't necessarily mind those things that much: not every show can be as visually stunning as vice versa, and im willing to suspend my disbelief a little

im personally more bothered by the small narrative details that don't quite add up because they need to be bent to serve the story, like when tanrak says, "you have to stay in the same bed every night. master will do a headcount," which later turns into, "IF master phak checks and we're both missing, we're so dead". and somehow none of the kids (especially kongdech) notice or care that tanrak is also missing until the next morning

im really just nitpicking to the extreme here tho, and as low as my mood is these days, i don't want to judge the whole show after one episode ;;;;;;;;

as for the opening scene, the more i think about it, the more i feel like this is what's going to happen:

1996: barth and tanrak meet when they are 17/18, fall in love, but tanrak ultimately chooses his faith so they go their separate way

around 2006: it's time for tanrak and kongdech to get ordained (kongdech says "that's over 10 years away" to his dad), barth shows up for it, tanrak realizes he can't go through with it because he still loves barth, they leave together and that's the last time father arnon sees barth

2025: barth and tanrak got happily married as soon as the marriage equality law passed, tanrak still goes to church because he never stopped believing in a god that could accept his love, the one being ordained is a kid they adopted and sent to school there

okay im actually not that sure about the kid thing, but everything else would make sense to me. at the very least it would explain the 30 years time jump vs father arnon saying it's been almost 20 years

to be completely fair, i do think forced separations/breakups are a narrative trope that's way too common in QLs in general, so it's not just a p'aof's issue, but i just finished the first episode of ticket to heaven and, well. i do hope im gonna eat my words, but i think it's pretty obvious we're going down that road

not because i believe even for a second that the one being ordained in the opening scene is tanrak, mind you, i just feel like they're not gonna let tanrak find the courage to choose barth before losing him. and i know that, on the other hand, tanrak choosing barth above god right away would probably be unrealistic, because catholic guilt is a bitch and im talking from experience here, but at the same time..idk, i just think forced separations have been so overused, and GMMTV has made it so abundantly clear that they would never allow a fixed pair to NOT end up together, that the trope has lost all its edge for me. even in a story like this, where any decision entails a profound loss, where the unfairness of being forced to choose between the love for a man and the devotion to god makes tanrak's struggle feel deeply relatable, and where a separation followed by a reunion in adulthood would make perfect sense, i just find that kind of storyline emotionally and dramatically exhausted at this point

but also if p'aof surprises us and it turns out that barth and tanrak are already married in the present (because the radio talking about the marriage equality bill in the opening is SUS) im gonna be upset anyway due to the forced separation happening only to last twilight

honestly, they all just very petty and trivial reasons, so i feel kinda ashamed sharing them ;;;;;;;;

i also think they're stemming from me not being in the best mood these days, which im aware is affecting my perception of things very negatively, but since you were kind enough to ask i am going to be honest and admit that it's a mix between me being a bit disgruntled at GMMTV for playing it safe most of the time and me still having beef with p'aof for what he did with last twilight ;;;;;;;;;;

the thing is..i do like GMMTV shows, i find them to be highly enjoyable (currently having a blast with enemies with benefit, even if im not posting much about it due to my current mood) and it's pretty rare for me not to watch them, but at the same time they hardly ever enter in my list of favorites because i do feel like GMMTV doesn't really take many risks. series like dare you to death, melody of secrets, my romance scammer, only friends dream on, girl rules....idk how to explain it, but to me there was just so much potential in all of these shows, if only GMMTV had allowed them to be..not 'darker', necessarily, but maybe grittier. even the official trailer for ticket to heaven felt way more watered down to me compared to the mock one, and while i know minor tone changes happen all the time, it did leave me a bit disappointed

as for my beef with p'aof, it's all completely irrational and deeply unfair of me, because i know im gonna be annoyed no matter what happens in the show: if we get another forced separation just to have them be reunited after X years, it's gonna piss me off because im SO TIRED of that, but if we get actual communication and understanding and growth, then im gonna be upset we couldn't get that in last twilight ;;;;;;;;;;

so yeah, as you can see it's just me being very negative and unreasonable, which i don't like to be, especially because i don't think it's fair to judge prematurely and let my feelings interfere with my ability to be objective
