Enjoy QL, mostly Thai, mostly series. To be honest, as you'll be able to tell by my show list, almost entirely BL with only the rare GL. (But if they start getting as good as ClaireBell was, I'll likely be watching more.) Also watch the occasional KDrama.

Here to read and comment on posts. Lack of posting does not represent non-engagment with a series. Reblogging represents engagement, not (necessarily) agreement with a post. Non-reblogging may (or may not) reflect an accessibility issue with the original post or that there is some other reason I don't want it on my blog (even if I like or agree with it).

If a series puts me off in the first episode, I will often abandon it, sometimes within the first few minutes. I'm less likely to abandon midway. If I'm considering abandoning a series I've otherwise liked up to that point, I'll often read the reviews on MDL or look up posts on the series, at risk of getting spoilers, to decide whether to go on with it (and it's gone both ways).

Not a fan of spoilers, but recognize it as a risk of engaging so I don't (usually) spoiler-shame. Please don't put them in comments to me, if you would be so kind.

Okay with sad endings if they're earned or otherwise inevitable. Not a fan of unearned endings, happy or sad.

Eternal Yesterday (rewatch episode notes) (not usually into high school QL but the plot got me and it blew me away, achingly sad throughout) (2 re-watches)

Wooju Bakery (tag link) (spaceship crash lands into an about to open bakery, chaos ensues, also romance - insanely funny with an emphasis on "insane," provided many needed hearty laughs throughout, don't bring your brain, but I absolutely loved it)

Until We Meet Again (fine contrast between the ghosts of the past and the world of today, deep story, but has a few problematic scenes that I cringe at, theme music got repetitive; content warning for suicide) (2 or 3 rewatches)

Much as I love them, I don't automatically recommend every one of them to everyone. The right rec for the right person!

You've mentioned before that it's remarkable that The Edge of Horizon is getting away with making the political commentary that it has made so far. Can you expand on that?

Ah, anything that edges into territory that might in anyway be considered a critique of the monarchy in Thailand is verboten. Historical or not.

This is a time of history of which Thailand is, in general, quite proud, but the aristocracy did NOT acquit itself well.

It's one thing to set a BL in Ayutthaya and quite another to touch on a time period within living memory. Some of the people involved (and many their progeny) are still around and still in similar positions of power (be it military, political, or landed gentry). This time in Thai history is still very present in the current political landscape.

To put it simply, stuff about Ayutthaya dovetails nicely with Thailand's BL as a soft power and companion tourist agenda. Where is this is very close to home. The Thai Monarchy is not like the British one, for example. It's not a figurehead butt of jokes, spoiled pets kept for the amusement/entertainment of the masses. The Thai royal family is much more present in government, powerful in many ways. (A bit more like Jordan, although perhaps not quite so much.)

And that's all I'm gonna say about that, since I'd like to continue to travel to Thailand on the regular.

Seriously though, people. Take Thailand's lèse-majesté seriously. It doesn't matter who you are, tourist or not. Do not criticize the monarchy in Thailand. Ever. Don't do it. It's like spitting out chewing gum in Singapore. Don't take that risk. Not worth the consequences.

The Edge of Horizon, episode 8

I'm seeing people commenting that Tinn is being self centered by saying that the revolution's success is his fault. I would have thought that except for the post that laid out Tinn knew Phob was in on the plot and chose to keep silent, and Phob knew Tinn knew and chose to not do anything about that. So yeah, he did in fact play a role in the coup being successful. (I'll never be able to find and don't remember who posted it and just discovered that my "#pandasmagorica bookmarks" tag only turns up for searches where I used it in my original post and not when I'm reblogging a post, I'm not sub blogging you whoever you are really.)

My one beef with the episode is that Siri seemed a little too ready to accept Jan's assurances. I know she's whipped for Jan, but still, it's upheaval, she'd be right to be worried.

I'm okay with Tinn mostly being a wimp. He wasn't a wimp where it counted - setting limits with Phob. I do want them back together, but they need to work for it.

And we have three episodes left.

Just hoping we don't have to wait a month after the next to last episode like we did with The Sign.

As much as Edge of Horizon delights in drawing out the angst and pain (and they have to, it's the lakorn way), I really appreciate how well they've crafted a story where you truly understand both of the main characters very well.

Phob was ripped away from the man he loved by people who belittled his worth, and so his belief in a better world where their love is possible is integral to his being. He wanted to be able to tell Tin everything so badly, but when the weight of the literal future of your country is on your shoulders, the idea of breaking through their idyllic temporary life together to face cold reality is an understandably daunting one.

Tin, on the other hand, is privileged and naive, yes, but he's experiencing the reality that the man he was ready to sacrifice everything he had and was for had been lying to his face on a daily basis. That's a devastating truth to face. Even with Phob's declarations of love, Tin has to confront that because of his position, the one that he proved he was willing to walk away from if given the choice, he is someone that Phob didn't feel he could trust.

Phob was trying to break down the wall between them, but to Tin it was just more confirmation that they live in two different worlds.

I keep thinking about the idea of sacrifice with them.

Tin was willing to sacrifice everything for Phob. His family, his job, and his title. He was willing to sacrifice everything except Phob.

Phob was willing to sacrifice Tin for his country and its people.

And that's what makes Phob so incredible to me. He doesn't love Tin any less; he loves him deeply and absolutely. That is indisputable. He made a choice because he wanted a better world, and losing Tin was the price of admission.

That’s why he was so conflicted and in so much pain through it all. He wanted both. He wanted the happiness he felt during those days spent in their home with Tin to last forever, but he also wanted to change his country and help people who were suffering. And the heartbreaking truth of it is that, in this moment, in this place, he simply couldn't have both.

And now Tin has to carry on. He has to live for the only thing he has left: his family. I don't think he's angry at Phob. Not really. He's just hurt and exhausted. I think he understands why Phob had to do what he did, but he also understands the harsh reality of where they are right now.

So before I go on, Phob isn't a bad person and this isn't a negative judgement of him. I believe he really loves Tinn and has good intentions, and it's because of that fact that I'm glad he's being challenged in a way. His strength as a person, his ethics, and his love of Tinn are strong enough to come out the other side of this difficult time. But he will be changed.

That being said, I think it's good in a way (good—not just appropriate or necessary) that Tinn has rejected Phob post-revolution. Phob has idealized Tinn—who wouldn't, with that face and sweet demeanor—and on some level he has put all his injustices in one big bucket. Like, the status quo is unfair—it resulted in these unfair material things in our lives, and it resulted in me being torn apart from Tinn. The status quo needs to change. And to some extent all these injustices live in one specific person, Prince Vasin. Up until now, that's been sort of convenient for Phob. It's been horrible, but the right & wrong of things, the us vs. them, has been fairly simple.

Phob really loves Tinn. He hasn't deliberately kept him at a distance. But he hasn't given Tinn the room to fully be a real person with his own complicated needs and loyalties. (Their relationship has only really lived in the physical bubble of the house in the country.) I understand why—if he ever started to, a vast quagmire of uncertainties would open up in front of him immediately. He doesn't allow himself to think about those possibilities. Plus, they're all tied up with Tinn's family and in turn with the royal family, which he considers an unfair impediment to so much that could be good in their country and in their lives.

And it wasn't that long ago that he wasn't sure Tinn still cared for him, so he's been focused on his newfound faith in Tinn's love. The trouble is that the strength of Tinn's love was never the question.

Before the actual coup went down, Phob told himself he'd explain things to Tinn and Tinn would understand. But he knew on some level that wasn't a given. If it were, he would have talked to Tinn ahead of time. I think Phob already understood that Tinn had his own complex situation to contend with, but that's been too much of a threat to his hopes for him to really conceive of it. Now he has to. He'll have to find a way to hold the contradictions of the revolution inside him—it's progress, it needed to happen, it will be good in many ways, but it's also been a means of destruction. And some of what has been destroyed wasn't inherently bad.

So much of this storytelling rests on Ongsa's shoulders, and his performance has been incredibly compelling while also being precise. We need to see that Tinn isn't pushing Phob away out of anger or bitterness—that could have been understandable, but it's not what he's doing. He's just as heartbroken as Phob, but his responsibilities have changed and his other loyalties have become even more important because of the seismic change in their society.

just a heads up that mr kill is on viki (and maybe iqiyi in some places??) now, so the eps will probably start disappearing from youtube in whatever regions viki has it (and by disappearing, i mean geoblocked). it's likely they'll disappear one by one because viki is releasing one ep a week, five weeks behind (so, viki has one ep, which means ep one is gone from youtube for me, the next week ep two will go, etc. and so on)

i'm pretty sure it'll still release on youtube each week, though, because this is apparently what happened with girl rules and maybe something else. but they'll just get geoblocked after four or five weeks when viki has 'caught up' with the eps, if that makes sense (which it probably doesn't because i am exhausted)

i keep seeing ppl being like "just get an id, what's the big deal?" about the potential voter registration restrictions, and let me tell you a story i am actively dealing with

i work with unhoused people fleeing domestic violence, and i have a client rn whose driver's license expired in 2024, and she needs a new id to apply for apartments. ok, cool. problem is, she lost all her documents due to the domestic violence

so we call the dmv. dmv needs a birth certificate. like i said, she lost her birth certificate. she needs a new one. her birth certificate is from out of state

we look up how to get a new birth certificate. the birth certificate needs an id to order it. cool cool cool

ok then what about secondary options? well, she needs two secondary sources of identification to order a replacement birth certificate, and she only has one, because for everything else she needs an id. fishing license? need an id. fucking park pass? id. she could have her 18+ child use their birth certificate to vouch for her, except her abuser won't let her talk to her children, so that's a no go

ultimately we land on social security card. this is where we're at in the process rn. ofc she doesn't have her ss card, so we need to order that. social security also requires an id to request a new card, but they'll take a health insurance card with a picture attached (god fucking bless them). she has medicaid but doesn't have a physical copy of the card, so we have to figure out how to get that. then once we do that we have to upload it to the social security website, and if that doesn't work, we have to, god forbid, call the social security office (takes literal hours) and then make an appointment. she doesn't have transportation or cell service, so we would have to figure out a way to coordinate me getting her to the appointment in order to present the document

then we wait 10+ days for the replacement, that has to be mailed to me bc she is unhoused and doesn't have an address

then we need to submit her request for a new birth certificate, which we have to figure out how to pay for, bc it is not free. they're at least a month behind on requests, btw, so we are probably looking at may at the earliest for that to arrive

then we need to take the birth certificate to the dmv

dmv also requires two pieces of mail not from a po box. she doesn't have an address, she is unhoused. she can use the homeless shelter in town, but we will need to mail her stuff there and have her receive it first, and also then the homeless shelter address will now be on her new id, which landlords will recognize and may discriminate against her for

during all of this she is sleeping in a garage. it was negative one degrees this morning. also, forgot to mention, she is terminally ill. some days i legitimately don't know if she lived through the night. every day is a toss up

the absolute soonest she will have an id is probably late may. forget voter registration--most rentals won't let her apply without it. she won't be offered section 8 housing without it. she can't apply for ssdi without it. she is blocked at literally every corner without it, and the absolute soonest she can get it is late may. the dmv literally has her old card on file, and she knows the number by heart, but it doesn't matter. it doesn't count if it's expired, as if she's somehow become someone new

and that's all with the help of someone whose job it is to do this shit. imagine if she didn't have a caseworker. she has a ten year old donated iphone that only works on wifi, she can't even do her own research bc she doesn't have internet half the time. how the hell is she supposed to get anything done on her own?

so yeah, fuck you if you think requiring an id isn't voter discrimination. "just get an id" is privileged af thinking and it infuriates me every time i hear it. lawmakers know exactly what they're doing with that restriction, and it's absolute bullshit

i think ppl would be a lot happier and better-adjusted on here if they realized that being online on a website is like being in any other casual public space full of people. if u walk into walmart u dont immediately think to yourself “i have to be friends with everyone in this walmart and if not everyone likes me i’m a failure” and u really shouldn’t feel that way online either. likewise if there’s a guy in the walmart parking lot shouting obscenities u probably wouldn’t answer him and that’s literally an exact equivalent to some of the weird stuff that people on here seem to feel they’re obligated to respond to.
