US Abortion Statistics - 2019
Because facts are important, and knowledge is power.
CDCs Abortion Surveillance System Frequently Asked Questions
You know how anti-abortion folks love to stretch the truth lie about abortion statistics. They want everyone to believe that every abortion involves a fully-formed, living, breathing entity being ripped from the womb of some careless, unfeeling pregnant person who doesn't want to have the lord's gift of motherhood bestowed upon them. The reality is that the overwhelming majority of abortions take place early on, and almost half are medically induced (aka taking a pill in the privacy of one's own home). Here's some info directly from the CDC:
Similar to previous years, in 2019, women in their twenties accounted for the majority of abortions (56.9%).
The majority of abortions in 2019 took place early in gestation: 92.7% of abortions were performed at ≤13 weeks’ gestation; a smaller number of abortions (6.2%) were performed at 14–20 weeks’ gestation, and even fewer (<1.0%) were performed at ≥21 weeks’ gestation.
Early medical abortion is defined as the administration of medications(s) to induce an abortion at ≤9 completed weeks’ gestation, consistent with the current Food and Drug Administration labeling for mifepristone (implemented in 2016). In 2019, 42.3% of all abortions were early medical abortions.
In 2019, 629,898 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC from 49 reporting areas.
This bit is just me extrapolating a smidge of that data and applying it to a worst case scenario:
That's 629,898 pregnant people, more than half of them in their twenties, who would have been forced to bear a child in 2019 if abortion was illegal in all 50 states.
Some would have died attempting to obtain an illegal abortion, more would have died from pregnancy or birth complications. All of their lives would have been impacted significantly, their plans changed, their next eighteen years dedicated to raising a child. Well over HALF A MILLION women, forced BY A GOVERNMENTAL ENTITY to give birth against their will, most of them whose own lives hadn't even quite begun yet.
You're heard it before, and now here it is again:
Literally.
IT LITERALLY DOES.
