Marty's leaning on his hand, taking down notes for Doc on the last batch of experiments they're conducting for the night. It's not that he's not interested in the work-- far from it, as the thirteen-year-old has been more focused on their work than he has on anything in school for at least two weeks-- but he's full from dinner and tired from the week he's had at school. And it's nice here in the garage, with Doc's voice dutifully reciting the readings and Einie's soft sighs and snuffling breaths from where he's curled up on his puppy bed.

He snaps himself out of it, offering a small grimace as he looks at the weird alien scrawl he wrote down instead of whatever Doc was actually saying. Trying really hard to focus, he sets his lips in a determined pout and tries again.

He takes down a few more strings of numbers, eyelids fluttering, head drooping, until finally the pen falls from his hand and his breathing evens out.

Marty doesn't wake up when Doc stops, apparently having noticed the state of his young protege. He stirs only slightly when he's scooped up into the scientist's arms, a soft noise escaping him as he turns into Doc's chest, curling closer, a hand coming up to fist in the front of his shirt.

He remains quiet until he's set down in Doc's own bed, sneakers taken off, and the covers drawn up over his body and shoulders.

When Doc starts to move away, the boy's fingertips grasp his shirt sleeve.

Marty doesn't really know he's bothering to try and talk instead of just hanging on for dear life to her... pelt? Pelt, he guesses. She smells like home, like metal and wet dog, and that's probably the reason he's not losing his shit as much as he should be being carried like a princess (or maybe more accurately, like a puppy) by his friend, who's now a giant, fuck off werewolf.

"... You can put me down now... I-I'm okay... Look, i-it's not even that bad, I just hurt my knee and twisted my ankle a little..." Kind of an understatement, since he'd whacked his head on the curb, but he'd just wiped out on his skateboard is all. Then suddenly he's literally being picked up by the scruff before being delicately held in huge hands with paw pads on them.

It's nice to be so tall, though.

He doesn't even really understand what's happening outside of the pain being dragged all the way through town and smashed through a half-finished building causes. He's dazed and every inch of him is hurting, from his raw hands and skinned knees to his back and shoulders feeling like they've been hit by a truck.

Marty only becomes aware when the rope is around his neck and he's being hoisted up, up, up, and he can't breathe. A primal panic surges through him and he struggles and fights back.

After everything he's been through, everything that's happened, this is how he's gonna die. A hundred years away from home and without even seeing--

Doc. That's Doc's voice. Part of him wants to fight back against the all-encompassing dark but part of him just wants to give in. He goes limp for a minute and then there's a bang and he's falling--

There's a hand frantically pawing at his chest, a familiar, frenzied voice above him he's only half understanding. Blue eyes flutter open and he can just barely make out the smear of colors that look like his best friend, feeling stronger arms than he remembers picking him up and cradling him close to his chest.

"... Doc?" Marty manages, voice croaky and hoarse, bursting into coughs that make him hurt even worse.
