he fixed a bunch of potholes recently and all my gay neighbors won't stop posting shit like this
You forgot the other two.
Beatrix Potter
Writer, illustrator, conservationist, natural scientist
For the inaugural Arcade Feature, I'm excited to tell you about Beatrix Potter. Most people (including me) know her best for her picture books-
-which have sold over 250 million copies since they were published in the early 1900s.
Fun fact: In 1903, Peter Rabbit was the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy, making him the oldest licensed character.
But what really caught my attention is the work she was doing before Peter Rabbit came along.
Beatrix Potter had a scientific eye for detail, and was able to faithfully depict the world around her. In particular, she was interested in mycology.
In 1897, she put forward a paper to the Linnean Society in London... but as a woman was not allowed to be a member of the society nor attend the meeting when her paper was read. When the society's members did not pay much attention to her work, and fearing her samples to be contaminated, Potter withdrew her paper, which became lost. Only after Potter left hundreds of mycological artworks to a museum in the Lake District, UK, on her death in 1943, were her scientific talents recognized... Potter's precise and beautiful paintings and drawings of fungi are now helping modern mycologists in their efforts to identify species.*
Potter eventually moved away from books in favor of land management and farming. She was a prize-winning sheep breeder and a prosperous farmer, and bought several farms surrounding her own to preserve the unique hill country landscape. Much of that land now constitutes the Lake District National Park.
Keep an eye out for more Beatrix Potter throughout the month of February.

permanently sharing a bedroom with someone else is insane and the expectation that that is the basic unit of life partnership is probably a main reason marriages fail. imo
heavy, heavy, heavy agree. it’s not a feasible thing to me. once in a while? sure, let’s sleep in the same bed. every single day for the rest of the foreseeable future? get the fuck out of here. i’ve had some friend in honest to god good relationships tell me they had bad sleeps because of their partner fussing or waking up so much earlier than them or what-have-you and i can’t imagine living like that. like you can’t get up and go to your own space?
One of the many stupid feelings humans are capable of having is the private, repulsive rage of seeing someone getting support and sympathy for a problem no one helped you with when you were having it, either because you didn’t have anyone or because it never occurred to you that you could ask for help. Suddenly the world seems to split into two – the realm that contains people like them, the connected and loved – and the realm that contains you, the miserable and the alone, who must suffer in solitude. This is sufficiently horrible that you grasp for reasons or world-understandings to make this reality acceptable, and a mentally available one is that it is superior to be in the miserable solitude realm, that the problem is one that should be solved with self sufficiency and dignity. That this other person is pathetic for being aided and loved when you were not. Scorn is more palatable than confronting the notion that you could have received aid (if you had made different choices or been luckier), that you desperately wish you could have been aided but were not. Scorn is more palatable than the howling hunger for things to have been different for you. So your mind chooses scorn.
It is also a bad place to be. Human existence is full of such traps.
to add to this: there’s also cases where a lot of people ARE legitimately abandoned by their previous support groups even when they do reach out and ask for help. or passively ignored when they’re obviously struggling. nevertheless, this does not make the bitterness and scorn good

adhd is like I think it’s gonna take me fifteen minutes to fill up my water bottle
OP: I accidentally wandered into a scenic spot at night right before they turned off the lights, and it triggered my megalophobia. It really looked just like the backrooms. (cr幸运Sally) (This location is the food court at Yangshuo Romance Park. The footage is 100% real on-location shooting, with zero special effects or post-editing of any kind.)
At Target this lady told her son he couldn’t have a Wonder Woman doll because “that’s for girls” and then bought her daughter the same one. It got me thinking about how often I see people bar young boys from appreciating girls/women as protagonists and heroes, and my own experience with it as a kid.
This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
Animals of the Lunar Mansions: Vermillion Bird (Part 4)
The 28 lunar mansions are a Chinese astronomical concept. Basically, they function like a zodiac for the moon, where the moon passes through a different mansion each day of the month. While India also has a concept of nakshatra, the asterisms are not strict equivalents.
The Chinese Lunar Mansions are aligned with seven "planets" of seven elements: Jupiter (wood), Venus (metal), Saturn (earth), Sun (light), Moon (darkness), Mars (fire), and Mercury (water). They also each have a guardian animal. The guardian animals are based on an expansion of the Chinese zodiac called the 36 Animals of the Hours (三十六禽). Days and hours were placed first in a cycle of 12, and then each unit was separated into three decans for a total cycle of 36, with an animal assigned to each decan. This system was used for divination, and then with the coming of Buddhism, for times of prayers. However, because there are only seven elemental planets, 8 animals were removed to leave a total of 28 animals for 28 mansions.
Each direction holds seven lunar mansions. Added together, they each form one mega-constellation. The constellation and guardian god of the South is The Vermilion Bird (朱雀/Zhuque).

I'm just going to say it - body hair (and beauty standards in general) is truly one of the final frontiers of women's issues in the West. Too many women just love their gilded cage too much. It shocks me how virulently women will defend it. I barely open my mouth and the "well I like how it feels. it just makes me feel cleaner. sensory issues. I do it for me. feminism is about choosing (to conform)." brigade come rushing in by the dozens.
Well I don't like how it feels. I don't feel cleaner without body hair. I don't prefer not having body hair. But who will advocate for women like me, but me? For women who do like hair removal, they are advocated for every time they step out of the house and see 99% of the female population also conforming to that standard, or when they watch a movie and see all the shaved actresses, or view an advertisment, or open a magazine, or watch a music video, or scroll through social media, or walk down the streets without receiving insults and glares for having a completely normal bodily feature.
You genuinely can't even point out that hairlessness is a man-made standard without women losing their shit and acting like they are totally immune to propaganda they've been exposed to from birth. I'm so tired.
These days as a butch who does not shave or wear makeup, I just wanna ask women who react to being told maybe they don't have to shave or wear makeup what on earth they're so scared of.

________
You will be remembered as a hero. ________
For those wondering about the fox. Grace has a subtle motif with this animal throughout the movie, but especially this shot where they pack this toy fox with his belongings on the Hail Mary. The pose of it looked a little haunting to me, thus prompting this illustration. __________ (Small/large prints are also available on my etsy ❤️)
Rest in peace Akihiro Miwa (1935-2026)
I haven't seen anyone talking about this and just wanted to make a quick post on here.
Akihiro Miwa recently passed away peacefully june 20th, and was not only a drag queen and a queer icon, but also the japanese voice of Arceus in the movie Arceus and the jewel of life, as well as the witch from Howl's moving castle and Moro from Princess Mononoke.
