i don’t want a job i want to read good books and drink good coffee and get kissed on the neck
When I was younger I used to be part of the “only-reads-complete-fics crowd” but as I’m getting older I’m realizing how powerful it can be to have consistent things to look forward to…
All the ppl in the tags laughing abt how fic updates aren’t consistent are cowards. I aim to be subbed to at least 365 fics. One for each day of the year. And that’s just my starting point. Your inbox? Empty. Barren. Fallow. Mine? Bountiful. Overflowing. A cornucopia of ripe treats awaiting my tender consumption. I wade through honey-rich excess while you starve of your own volition.
“I wade through honey-rich excess while you starve of your own volition”.
This line is the sexiest way to say “You fucked up” that I have ever read. I have to start using this in my life when pointing out the follies of others.
I tend to follow fics that don’t update consistently or over long periods of time (I mean I myself am no better when updating lol) so when it does update I get super excited and it’s so rewarding
And those of us writers who struggle with updating are incredibly grateful for followers like you!!
Thank you!!
I have at least one new thing to read every day. Even taking into account that a lot of these have been abandoned over the eight years I’ve been on this site.
some of yall will be like “i dont care about your dreams, i dont care about your spotify wrapped, i dont want to hear about your interests, dont you dare talk to me about your trauma,” and its like. what do you even have friends for. bc it sounds to me like you dont give a shit about anything that makes them a person. what do you talk about.
a few people have expressed some resistance to the “trauma” part of this post and like. im Obviously not talking about trauma dumping in inappropriate situations. if youre friends with someone — real friends, not acquaintances — and their past experiences come up and you dont want to hear it, not bc its triggering to you or anything but bc you just dont give a shit, then youre a bad friend. you can talk about trauma dumping and emotional labor till the cows come home but theres no amount of woke verbiage that will make it okay lmao

MOTH MUG MY BELOVED!!! AT LONG LAST!!!!
now that I have it I confess that part of the reason I've repeatedly hesitated and overthought myself out of buying one is that a part of me was afraid I'd overhyped it and that once I had it in my hands I wouldn't love it as much as I thought I would
very happy to report that was all obviously really stupid and anxiety is weird and stupid and I'm absolutely in love with this gorgeous thing, this perfect object of incredible delight
Y’know an awful lot of Terry Pratchett’s books are concerned with how powerful women are when they get angry and how important anger is as a driving force to defend what is right and to tackle injustice.
A lot of his most interesting and most deeply moral characters are angry ones. Granny Weatherwax, Sam Vimes, Tiffany Aching. All are to a large extent driven to do good by anger.
And that honestly means a lot to me.
Terry was an angry man. This is not the same as saying he was a bad man. He held a righteous fury, the kind that comes from looking at the world, and knowing just how much better it could be if only we stopped being bastards. He held a genuine belief that people can and do change the world for the better, not by big things, but by the little. He believed in the kindness of others, and that kindness means more than wishing well and prayers. He knew the difference between being good and doing good, and that you technically couldn’t be the first without the latter.
He was angry at the world because he loved it, and he wanted us to feel the same, to not feel helpless, to know that something can be done, to know that anger is not just the tool of abusers and tyrants but the chisel by which The People might chip away at oppression and fear and bring it crumbling down. He gave us the drive needed to believe in hope. because he wanted to make the world better with words and not violence.
I hope he knows that he did.

Sometimes people are just soooo close to getting it.
Check out accidentally left wing on twitter it’s gold

This reminds me of the antivax nursing student who couldn’t find enough sources for her antivaccine paper
randomly remembered “i have d cups, grandpa. the waitress thinks you have dementia” tonight so i decided to find the original tweet again and
[ID: A Tweet and self-reply by Twitter user Akira.
The original Tweet says "At a certain magnitude of cunt severity, getting misgendered by your family stops hurting and starts being funny. I have D cups, Grandpa. The waitress thinks you have dementia."
The reply reads: "UPDATE: she was right". End ID]
So, one thing I'd like to note here is
One of the lesser known early symptoms of dementia is that people start being more disagreeable.
Part of this is probably the natural result of being increasingly confused and upset day to day constantly. Another possible thing is that the same mechanism that causes dementia is also attacking the part of the brain that does emotional regulation.
And the thing is this is super early stage. By the time they stop remembering when's the last time you met, it's already way too late. But if an older person in your life starts acting way more like a cunt for literally no reason, and it's not particularly in character for them, it really might be worth testing for dementia or Alzheimer's because you have a lot more options catching it earlier.
After shoving Hansel in the oven, the witch turns to Gretel - who is currently fending the witch off with a gingerbread chair - and says:
“I can’t believe you thought a trail of breadcrumbs would save you. I mean, honestly, this is a forest! It’s full of animals. Honestly, the very idea that a dumb shit like you thought you could get the better of me is absurd.”
Gretel hits her in the face with said chair. To be fair to the witch, she takes the chairshot like a champ.
“Ow!”
“Did you know,” says Gretel, “that crows are capable of facial recognition?”
“Eh?” Says the witch, clambering to her feet and pulling a candy cane sledgehammer off the wall. “What’s that got to do with anything?”
“Not only that,” Gretel continues, “but they can remember both friends and enemies. And they’ll often follow people they remember as friends.”
The two fence with their sugared weapons for a moment, before the witch knocks the chair out of Gretel’s hands.
“Enough with the bird facts! Honestly, this whole attempted escape has been utter clownshoes. Get in the fucking oven!”
She seizes Gretel by the collar. Gretel immediately sandbags, letting her whole body go limp. This eminently practical defense forces the witch to try and deadlift her. Which is hard, as the witch often skips leg day.
“For example,” Gretel says, as the witch struggles and grunts, “if you feed crows a lot of breadcrumbs, they’ll probably start to see you as a friend and follow you in the hope of more food.”
The witch stops. Outside, she hears the thunder of wings.
“They’ll even bring you shiny things they find as presents!” Says Gretel, as a corner of the gingerbread ceiling is suddenly cut away by a large crow with a knife in its mouth.
“Oh shitballs.” Says the witch, as the crows descend. “I hope you know this is a great unkindness.”
“Technically,” Says Gretel, “It’s a murder.”
Context:
The original video, for anyone who hasn't seen it:
And the relevant album cover:
Sessler was a teenager when "We're Not Gonna Take It" it was on the charts. Probably had MTV so he saw the video.
No fuckin' idea how he thought it was in support of "traditional American values."
The cultural impact of “boomer” as a pejorative has been disastrous and I’m not even kidding
Gen z is not exceptional. Large swaths of gen z propagated Facebook-uncle tier misinformation to smear Amber Heard for speaking out about their favorite pirate actor. People are convinced “deadass no cap on god” is “tiktok speak” and not butchered AAVE. Many are already starting to define themselves as a generation of work ethic and meritocracy, unlike those whiny debt-riddled millennials. It’s becoming humiliatingly clear that this generation is not exceptional, it’s not radical just by virtue of being young (and we won’t be young forever), and it’s not going to fix everything “once the boomers die out.” We are speedrunning the stereotypical “hippie to Reagan voter” trajectory of the boomers, whose counterculture at the time frankly puts ours to shame. So are you going to put in the work, or are you going to gloat about being young and special and then shit yourself when you turn thirty?

i cannot for the life of me find that essay about how sterilized, approachable, “nice” literature was used in victorian england to create a cultural imaginary that wholeheartedly ignored the atrocities being committed by the state, but every time i see someone sincerely make the argument that escapist stories are the only moral form of storytelling it rings in my head like a bell. it haunts me. some of y’all actually think that wide-scale erasure is better that attempting to grapple with messy reality in fiction and it’s honestly so exhausting
ALSO can we stop evaluating stories solely based on their utility? Please? there is more to a narrative than whether it’s “harmful” or not, and it’ll be way better in the long run to be able to understand what the ideas being communicated are and how they’re communicated than sticking to just whether or not they’re objectively and universally Good.
I’m sure people have already linked you this, but is it Gary Brecher’s “Amateurs Talk Cancel, Pros Talk Silence”?
The real problem, the kind of thing that would make De Niro in Casino groan, “Amateur night!”, starts when people imagine that they can stop immoral behavior by policing immoral characters, phrases, or scenes in literature.
They’re looking for the wrong thing. They’re sniffing for depictions of immorality, when they should be scanning the silences, the evasions.
There’s a very naïve theory of language at work here, roughly: “if people speak nicely, they’ll act nicely” — with the fatuous corollary, “If people mention bad things, they must like bad things.”
The simplest refutation of that is two words: Victorian Britain.
Victorian Britain carried out several of the biggest genocides in human history. It was also a high point of virtuous literature. […]
I can’t begin to express the difference it makes just that I’m able to wear exclusively t-shirts, baggy shorts, and flip-flops. And the thing is, right. What you notice is that I’m wearing something slightly odd for the weather. What you don’t notice is that I’m not curled up with my hands clamped over my ears because socks make the clinking plates in the restaurant too loud.
