i think one of the many cogs in why online discourse annoys me so much is just how many damn words there are. its never 'you shouldnt do [x] because that's cruel and assumptive' its 'you shouldn't do [x] because thats [BUZZWORD] and makes you a [BUZZWORD] who is aligning yourself with [BUZZWORD]'. and like obviously i dont want those terms to go away, theyre useful, we need precise language, it has it's place, but sometimes it really feels like people only wanna be good people when it means they get to feel like a Forward Thinking Political Activist. does anyoneget what im saying

like idk. it makes sense. people are going to better understand why they shouldnt do things or should adjust their thinking if they understand what sort of hateful groups also adopt those lines of thinking. i just wish people could more easily be swayed by simply understanding basic concepts such as 'being mean is bad, and will make people upset' and 'stereotypes are not good and cause damage'

might be talking out my ass but i think it's also why so many ppl who supposedly have strong morals dont actually have any personal moral backbone they abide by. instead of actually having base morals you believe in, it becomes a game of figuring out what will or wont make people mad at you online and scrambling toward making sure you reflect the Good Guy labels you want because you dont want people to label you as one of the Bad Guys, without actually fully understanding why 1 thing is good and why 1 thing is bad. and then you have to get repeatedly slapped on the wrist and course corrected bc youre not actually learning you just know what people consider bad and are flinching away from buzzwords. a lot of this misery and confusion could be avoided by understanding basic concepts such as 'being mean is bad, and will make people upset' and 'stereotypes are not good and cause damage' and 'respecting other people is good'

Is it just me or is that graph implying online friends don't count ? Cause my husband was introduced to me by a friend online and I'd wager that happens quite more often than this graph implies.
