The ‘Fishermen’s Hospital’ in Great Yarmouth, England, was built in 1702 by the Great Yarmouth Town Council. It was a poorhouse for ‘impoverished fishermen’. It provided a home for 20 poor fishermen who were no longer able to work, as well as their wives.

Twenty small cottages were arranged around a courtyard. The residents lived there rent-free and were given a bucket of coal every week. In the courtyard there was a water pump and latrines. Each cottage had a living room with a huge fireplace and either a spiral staircase or a ladder leading up to the sleeping area above.

In the 1980sand 1990s, the building was renovated and the number of cottages was reduced from 20 to 10; furthermore, the attic was no longer inhabited
