you tell a christian that bad christians exist and the no true scotsman fallacy rears its head
There's this whole story unfolding on TikTok right now about this account that got popular — a woman in the US who calls up churches & pretends to have a starving newborn that hasn't eaten since last evening & asks them if they could help her out with a can of formula. Unsurprisingly, none of the ridiculous megachurches actually ever say yes, and the churches & other religious institutions that did say yes are getting lots of support from people.
But I just saw a video of a TT user explaining that they decided to do their own little social experiment — by walking up to drug dealers on the street, telling them there's a young woman with a baby who needs help with formula, and literally all of them immediately reached into their pockets. In this story, the OP did have a real neighbor with a baby who ended up getting some much needed baby supplies. Thanks to the charity of local drug dealers.
A lot of Americans are learning that their rich white Christian churches are less willing to help their communities than black churches, mosques, buddhist temples, the satanic temple & apparently also crack dealers.
I've interacted with churches and crackheads, and in my experience the crackheads are actually way more concerned about community.
Back in my previous life in flower delivery, I would 10/10 hands down rather be lost in the poorer neighborhoods than the rich ones. Rich folks will watch you struggle through their Venetian blinds while calling the cops on you. Poor folks ask if they can help and oh yeah Miss Carol lives two houses down, I'll walk with you she doesn't wear her hearing aids most days.
I volunteered for a Catholic charity and during that time, the only person I could have a good conversation about harm reduction & the systematic violence homeless people & addicts face was with a drug dealer. The social workers & volunteers who studied sociology would only ever talk about how the field has gotten too soft & woke.
as someone still in the process of healing from organised religion, life feels like being perpetually stuck in the 5 stages of grief. it doesn’t feel like i’m moving forward or like i’m deconstructing.
In my experience if youre an atheist there will be many, many times in life when you are faced with the dilemma that is "i really like this person, but their religion is so woven into the fabric of who they are that I can not voice my own beliefs around them without them taking it personally and, in a lot of cases, morally." When you are faced with this dilemma, you can either shut up and never voice your own beliefs while they continue to voice theirs unimpeded, or you can risk them seeing you as a bitch.
And im telling you right now from personal experience to always choose being a bitch. No matter how much you like someone, if they can voice their beliefs freely but your own have to be locked up tight while they begrudgingly tolerate them, that's an unhealthy dynamic that is going to boil up and explode one day. And im also telling you from experience that when that explosion happens, the religious person is the one whose side everybody takes, because as an atheist you are seen as inherently aggressive and bigoted towards religious and spiritual people even and especially in "progressive" spaces.
This is not limited to religion either, this also includes if your witchy friend is allowed to talk all day about your star chart and how it determines your personality but you saying "I dont believe in spirits or astrology or spells" sends them into a death spiral
This post brought to you by me thinking about that extremely Christian ex-friend of mine who once told me that it was only sad when non-christians died because Christians got to go to heaven. And then at another time when I told her "praying for me doesnt help my current emotional situation because im an atheist but I appreciate the gesture," she jumped into my DMs having seven breakdowns at the same time and sent me Bible verse after Bible verse because "I just dont want you to go to hell!" (Not an exaggeration, those were her real words in that order) And then got really upset when I asked what the fuck was wrong with her on both occasions.
Can you guys take one fucking post about atheism without jumping in with a disclaimer calling us privileged and self-victimizing and bringing up faiths that weren't even mentioned in the post to pretend we have some kind of innate systemic power over

it feels like christianity’s ruined me in some way. i feel like i’ve been gutted, and had all the things that make me human torn out.
I genuinely think there was no greater insight into the modern Christian mindset than when the Pope said he very much hoped Hell was empty and he was absolutely hounded by both Catholics and Protestants outraged at the idea of a man who wanted a place of infinite suffering to have nobody in it.
what doesn't kill you makes you post on tumblr
every now and again, i try to put my grievances with christianity into a well-articulated speech but it ends up snowballing and becoming a beast of an argument. does anyone else feel this way?
sometimes i feel like there’s something wrong with me. i don’t connect with god and i have no desire to, but i see people my age so happy to know him and it feels like i’m missing something.

religions will really lay out overtly fascist ideals and concepts in their books, unapologetically, and then liberals chime in "nooo that's a misinterpretation". babe, I guarantee it's not.
Progressive Christians are like: I can't believe this centuries old institution with a history of oppressing and marginalizing women and queer folk is oppressing and marginalizing women and queer folk!
The other thing about discussing harmful things about the christian church and getting "that's not what that verse really means/that's not how that doctrine should be applied/that's not actually supported biblically/etc" back is that... at a certain point it doesn't matter. Yes there are varying beliefs within christianity (understatement with 45,000 different denominations lmao), but you don't get to claim that christianity is separate from any harmful beliefs when a lot of harmful beliefs are the majority.
You can say "the bible wasn't ever talking about gay relationships in [xyz] verses" but that doesn't make the average church actually safe and affirming for queer people. You can say "actually hell doesn't have any biblical backing" but that doesn't mean very much when like 75-80% of christians believe in hell. You can say "men and women are equal in the eyes of the Lord" but it doesn't erase the rampant misogyny in christian culture.
If the members make up the church, if members are the church, then at a certain point the cultural beliefs or majority beliefs have precedence over what was intended. You can't say "oh just ignore [belief/doctrine/interpretation/etc]" when that would be dismissing the church's most predominant collective beliefs. You don't get to just disregard harm because that "wasn't the intention". You don't get to look at the result of said harm and decide it doesn't matter because it makes you look bad.
longsuffering being a fruit of the spirit in a religion that worships an allegedly omniscient, omnipotent and omnibenevolent god………
i think i’ve always told myself that i have to be measured and super consistent in everything i do, lest that make me a christian but no!!!! sorry but i am human!!!! i am not anti-religion, i am anti-christianity!!!!!!!!!! i was always like, “well you can’t really claim to critically appraise religion as a structure when you only talk about christianity.” and i was somewhat right but like, i’m not this super articulate spokesperson!!! i just hate christianity, that’s really it. yes i hate all organised religion but my BEEF is with christianity.

do you think mocking catholicism is funny
yes. next question
mocking catholics is a win-win because you get to make christians feel persecuted, which they love and find very validating
Dipping into the atheist/ex-religious circles of Tumblr just to see a bunch of religious mockery and misinterpretation.
Gah!
Well, glad I took the time to craft a lengthy response, poured out all my grievances in it and left it at drafts.
Very relaxing.
